The pandemic has turned even more people into gamers. About one in three people worldwide play video games, according to the Entertainment Software Association. But it’s more than just fun.“And we've been able to make sure that we were producing things that not only brought people together in ways that made them enjoy the games, but connected them to each other because today 65% of people in America who play games play with other people,” said Stanley Pierre-Louis, President and CEO of the Entertainment Software Association.Video game popularity was already on the rise before COVID-19, supporting more than 425,000 jobs directly and indirectly related to the industry last year.It generated more than 90 billion in economic output, according to the Entertainment Software Association impact report. It includes jobs in engineering, coding, video game design, storyline and even professional players.“What that's meant is that within schools, you now have esports scholarships and in fact there are over 200 varsity sports programs around the nation, creating new opportunities for people to play professionally,” said Pierre-Louis.Education and jobs related to gaming can also lead to other opportunities outside the industry. The graphic design and visual elements that go into video games are as in demand in other fields.“So, if you learn video game design, you're able to also help with airlines simulations and so it's creating opportunities across many sectors,” said Pierre-Louis.Advancements rooted in the video game industry have found their way into other areas, including medical imaging and robotics, military training and simulation, and education. Those directly employed by the video game industry make on average 1,000 a year. 1757

The porn star known as Stormy Daniels threatened to call off a nondisclosure agreement with President Donald Trump's lawyer weeks before the election, The Washington Post reports, citing an email from Daniels' lawyer obtained by the newspaper.Trump's personal legal counsel, Michael Cohen, agreed to pay the woman, whose real name is Stephanie Clifford, reportedly in exchange for her silence about an alleged affair she had with Trump several years prior. But according to the Post, an email from Clifford's lawyer, Keith Davidson, on October 17, 2016, shows Clifford's lawyer threatening to end the nondisclosure deal. At that point, the payment had not arrived, the newspaper said.Shortly after, a second email to Cohen from Davidson obtained by the newspaper said: "Please be advised that my client deems her settlement agreement canceled and void."Ten days after those emails, another email shows Daniels received a 0,000 payment, according to the Post.Cohen admitted last month to making the payment, saying in a statement that the exchange was a "lawful" "private transaction" in which he used his "own personal funds," and "was not a campaign contribution or a campaign expenditure by anyone.""Neither the Trump Organization nor the Trump campaign was a party to the transaction with Ms. Clifford, and neither reimbursed me for the payment, either directly or indirectly," Cohen said.Cohen reportedly set up a private LLC shortly before the 2016 presidential election to pay Clifford, following an alleged July 2006 sexual encounter with Trump, The Wall Street Journal reported in January. After the initial reports of the payment, Cohen said in a statement that Trump "vehemently denies" any encounter between the two."Just because something isn't true doesn't mean that it can't cause you harm or damage," Cohen's latter statement said. "I will always protect Mr. Trump."Clifford's manager also said last month that Clifford now believes Cohen voided the non-disclosure by admitting to the payment."Everything is off now, and Stormy is going to tell her story," said Gina Rodriguez, Clifford's manager.The-CNN-Wire? & ? 2018 Cable News Network, Inc., a Time Warner Company. The name change for Boy Scouts of America is creating a buzz online as people react the organization's recent move to become more inclusive. They will begin calling the program for ages 11 to 17 "Scouts BSA."It was a historic decision for Boy Scouts of America as they take the next step towards allowing females into all their programs with their focus on bringing families together in one spot. It's all a part of the new "Scout Me In"?recruitment campaign, uniting girls and boys of the same family with one organization."Having Johnny in Scouts and Sally in soccer or some other activities — if they can go and do things together as a family unit, that's what families are looking for from the research we have," says Chris Mehaffey, scout executive and CEO of the Mid-America Council. And so the move was made today, switching the Boy Scouts program to Scouts BSA with the hopes that the new name will make girls feel comfortable joining the program geared towards 11-18 year olds.Still Mehaffey believes the name switch won't make a huge difference in girls joining the scouts. "I think those that are interested in our program will come anyway, this just shows that we are being more inclusive to what demographics we'll be serving."As for the Girl Scouts, they're remaining focused on creating programs for girls, and only girls. "So it's not changing the way we deliver our mission and programs. We're going to continue to do what girls asked us to do and provide for their changing needs," says Melissa Breazile, marketing director of Girl Scouts of Nebraska. And if girls desire, Mehaffey says girls can choose to join both organizations. "You don't have to choose. Girl Scouts meet on different nights, Cub Scouts, Scouts BSA meet on different nights, if you're interested in both if parents will allow, do both."Now this switch only affects the Boy Scout program. Ranks like Cub Scouts and Eagle Scouts, will keep their names. While the Cub Scouts have already began to bring in girls, the organization plans to fully bring them in by February of 2019. 2115

The mother whose 1-year-old son was forcefully yanked away by New York Police Department officers last week had her charges dropped and was ordered released on her own recognizance, defense attorneys said.Jazmine Headley, 23, had been arrested Friday at a Brooklyn social services office and faced four charges, including resisting arrest and acting in a manner injurious to a child. Brooklyn District Attorney Eric Gonzalez moved to dismiss the charges on Tuesday."Like everyone who watched the arrest of Jazmine Headley, I was horrified by the violence depicted in the video and immediately opened an investigation into this case," Gonzalez said, adding that the incident should have been handled differently."Continuing to pursue this case will not serve any purpose and I therefore moved today to dismiss it immediately in the interest of justice," he said.Disturbing video of the arrest, in which Headley's son is ripped away by arresting NYPD officers, has sparked sharp criticism from city officials and unfavorable comparisons to Border Patrol actions during the Trump Administration's family separation policy at the US-Mexico border.Headley has been in jail in Riker's Island since Friday, held on an outstanding arrest warrant from July 2017 for failure to appear in connection with credit card fraud, said the sheriff's office in Mercer County, New Jersey.A judge on Tuesday afternoon ordered her release, according to Lisa Schreibersdorf, the executive director of Brooklyn Defender Services who is representing Headley."We ask that her privacy is respected at this time, as she has been through a traumatizing ordeal and has not seen her family in five days," Schreibersdorf said. The decision comes a day after the NYPD said the incident was "troubling" and that they would be reviewing the incident. No NYPD officers have had a duty status change since the incident, an NYPD spokesperson said. Two Human Resources Administration officers involved in the incident are on leave and will be placed on modified duty when they return to work pending an investigation. The Patrolmen's Benevolent Association, the union representing NYPD officers, said the officers were put in an impossible situation."The event would have unfolded much differently if those at the scene had simply complied with the officers' lawful orders," PBA President Patrick J. Lynch said. "The immediate rush to condemn these officers leaves their fellow cops wondering: when confronted with a similar impossible scenario, what do you want us to do? The answer cannot be 'do nothing.'" 2605

The MLB Players’ Association issued its counterproposal to league owners for getting the 2020 season underway as the start of the season was disrupted due to the spread of the coronavirus. The latest proposal is for a 70-game season with players receiving a full prorated salary for those games. With most professional sports leagues coming back this summer, MLB has yet to formalize a plan for resumption.MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred said on Wednesday that a new set of proposals was forwarded to the players. The tone from Manfred on Wednesday differed from earlier in the week.“We left that meeting with a jointly developed framework that we agreed could form the basis of an agreement and subject to conversations with our respective constituents,” MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred said. “I summarized that framework numerous times in the meeting and sent Tony a written summary today. Consistent with our conversations yesterday, I am encouraging the Clubs to move forward and I trust Tony is doing the same.”But the union seemed to suggest that it was too soon for optimism.“In my discussions with Rob in Arizona we explored a potential pro rata framework, but I made clear repeatedly in that meeting and after it that there were a number of significant issues with what he proposed, in particular the number of games,” MLBPA head Tony Clark said on Thursday. “It is unequivocally false to suggest that any tentative agreement or other agreement was reached in that meeting. In fact, in conversations within the last 24 hours, Rob invited a counterproposal for more games that he would take back to the owners. We submitted that counterproposal today.”MLB said that based on an agreement between the league and players days after the league suspended Spring Training, players would only be paid a full prorated salary if games were held in front of fans. As of now, the likelihood of MLB games being played in front of fans this season appears to be low.The players union has complained that the league is attempting to play the fewest number of games possible.“The commissioner has repeatedly threatened to schedule a dramatically shortened season unless players agree to hundreds of millions in further concessions,” the MLBPA said on June 13. “Our response has been consistent that such concessions are unwarranted, would be fundamentally unfair to players, and that our sport deserves the fullest 2020 season possible.” 2430
