A mother charged with killing her two young sons by placing them in an oven and turning it on was expected to appear in court on Monday but was not at the appearance.Investigators say 24 year-old Lamora Williams put her sons, ages two and one, into an oven and turned it on. The toddlers, 1-year-old Jakarter Penn and 2-year-old Keyounte Penn, had burns on their bodies when police found them at the Oakland City West End Apartments in Atlanta.Lamora Williams' family said she struggled most of her life with mental issues and may have been dealing with postpartum at the time of the incident.It’s a tragedy which her sister thinks could have been prevented.“She had issues and the fact that the state failed her, that’s a problem,” said Tabitha Hollingworth.Plus, family say the writing was on the wall. She routinely left her children home alone and had even attempted to cut her wrists.Wearing dark sunglasses to hide her tears, Brenda Williams is saddened, but not surprised that her daughter is now charged with murder.“Mora wasn’t right, she hasn’t been right and what happened three months ago, that the kids father left her, I told him something tragic is going to happen. She’s going to do something to those kids, she’s going to do something to herself,” said Brenda Williams.Williams is charged with two counts of murder and one count of cruelty to children in the first degree. A teacher at Dickson Intermediate School in Tennessee launched an emergency lunch money fund for students after an interaction with one child inspired her to help children in need."As I was walking through the cafeteria one day, I saw a child with no tray and no drink just stopped to build those relationships as teacher do, and just asked are you not eating? Do you need something?" said sixth grade literary teacher Julie Potter. "His comment was mom said we’re out of money so I can’t eat today."Potter told the student to grab lunch, on her.But she said she realized that was a short term solution."I thought if I could just donate just a few dollars to set up an account so the next time, the next child will feel safe enough to go through the line without worrying about pride and be fed," Potter said.So Potter put out a post on Facebook, detailing her interaction with the student and a plan to help others."I share this message to say I would like to set up a special lunch account called 1 in 4," the post read. "This account would be for those students, just a handful and only as needed, we see going without food. An account where we as school staff could quietly say, 'Go through the line and it will be taken care of.'"In just 10 days, teachers and parents have donated to the fund and two students have used the emergency money to eat.And while Dickson Intermediate never turns away a hungry student, officials said this helps further break down barriers."Some are going to feel a little embarrassed or shy about asking for help," said School Nutrition Supervisor Jason Collins. "That’s why I think it’s so important that we focus on building those relationships."According to Feed America about one in four children in Dickson County are food insecure but don't qualify for federal assistance.If you'd like to donate to Dickson Intermediate's fund you can drop money off at the school's front office or mail it to the school. A New York couple who were reportedly on their honeymoon drowned after being caught in a rip current. The United States State Department confirmed to E.W. Scripps that the U.S. citizens died on Oct. 28 while in Turks and Caicos.USA Today reported that New York Attorney Mohammad Malik, 35, and his bride, Dr. Noor Shan, 29, were married just four days when they drowned after being pulled under a rip current near their resort.The groom's father, Maqbool Malik, told Long Island Newsday that the loss is "devastating."He told the newspaper that the couple was pulled out from the water by witnesses, who performed CPR, but they both died at the scene.According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, riptides are "powerful, narrow channels of fast-moving water."Officials with the State Department offered their "sincerest condolences to their loved ones on their loss" and said it had "worked to provide all appropriate consular assistance to the families" and "out of respect to the families during this difficult time, we have no further comment." 1075

A new report card is out for dozens of fast-food restaurants, and overall, most failed when it comes to serving antibiotic-free beef.Only two of the restaurant chains received an A grade for having no antibiotics in their beef. Those two included the up-and-coming chain BurgerFi and Shake Shack. The remaining top 22 burger chains failed to pass the test. "We know that change can happen,” says Mark Morgenstein, spokesperson for U.S. PIRG, a consumer and health advocacy group. “We just need the market pressure to be applied.”The organization is just one of many pushing for safer foods and antibiotic-free farms.   "The problem starts at the beginning,” Morgenstein says. “It starts on the farm." According to the CDC, it’s estimated drug-resistant superbugs kill 23,000 people in America each year.Just this past year, health groups made progress in getting chains to go antibiotic-free with their chicken."When there was pressure from McDonald’s and KFC and Subway not to use antibiotics in chicken, guess what? A New Jersey state trooper admitted to the state's attorney general that he pulled over women while on duty in an attempt to ask women out on a date, WNBC-TV reported. The trooper, 37-year-old Marquice Prather, pleaded guilty on Monday to charges of invasion of privacy, tampering with physical evidence and falsifying or tampering with records. He had been suspended without pay since December after accusations mounted against the trooper. WNBC reported that Prather will be banned from public office, and likely will face probation for the charges. Authorities told WNBC that Prather tampered evidence by turning off his microphone, as the trooper claimed the microphone malfunctioned. Prather was accused by authorities of going through personal information and photos on the cellphones of female motorists. Prather was also accused of copying intimate photos and videos of the women, and he would solicit the women to go on a date with him. 1028
