SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - There are growing concerns over illegal filming in private places, like short-term vacation rentals. A San Diego security expert shows us how surveillance cameras are getting smaller, cheaper and harder to spot.Joe Oregon is a San Diego cyber security expert who also teaches at San Diego State University. He knows how simple it is to plant and conceal hidden cameras and tells us, “You want to make sure that you're closely inspecting the room or the location you're going to.” “I cringe thinking about it just as a citizen and as a father, you know. I have children, as well,” he adds.People’s worries over spy cameras have been increasing in the U.S. and internationally. A couple on vacation in Florida found themselves on-camera. At their short-term rental, they discovered a smoke detector with a hard drive in it, recording them in bed.A couple staying at a rental in Toronto was reportedly shocked to find a spy camera hidden in an alarm clock, pointed at the bed.Engineer Brandon Schamer specializes in micro-cameras. “They hide them in the smoke detectors. Sometimes people will actually tuck them under hidden spots where you wouldn't look like behind the TV,” he says. Schamer reveals that a spy camera can be hiding in an air conditioning vent, a plant, a stuffed animal, or even a spice rack. There are numerous possibilities.He says when you check into a rental unit, use the flash light on your phone’s camera to look around to see any reflections from tiny lenses. He explains that you can also check for infrared frequencies. “It’s totally invisible to the naked eye,” he adds. Your cell phone camera can detect infrared. Schamer explains that you should put your phone’s camera in “selfie-mode” and scan the room for a purple light which could indicate there's a transmitting camera. These days most cameras can be bought online. “They're not illegal devices so anyone can purchase them,” adds Oregon.Vacation rental sites like Airbnb and VRBO have strict rules about surveillance. Cameras are allowed in living rooms but they must be disclosed on the rental forms. They're not allowed in private areas like bedrooms or bathrooms. Oregon doesn't think you should descend into paranoia, but, he adds, “It's important to have a healthy dose of concern.” 2298

For 48-year-old Cherie Friesth, this Carmel Valley clinic is giving her hope. "This just gives you a little help and a boost towards that goal," said Friesth.She's already a mother of four and a grandmother of eight, but she wants one more. "She did not do well in terms of egg number, but it improved the quality of the egg so that we got an embryo that was actually normal in a woman who is 48 years old, and that’s extremely unusual," said Wood. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - This week the Honor Flight family is saying goodbye to beloved family member Arthur Smith, a World War II Veteran and the inspiration behind San Diego's Honor Flight chapter.Back in 2009, Arthur and his son Dave went to Washington D.C. with the Honor Flight Network. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Thousands of San Diego County jury trials are on-hold because of the pandemic. Local court officials have requested another extension from the Judicial Council of California for jury trials to be postponed through mid-September.On Monday, ABC10 News spoke to San Diego Superior Court Presiding Judge Lorna Alksne about the challenges of returning to jury trials. “We’re at 25-hundred jury trials that need to be tried,” she told us.Trials were halted on March 17th. Non-jury trials are currently in progress through a remote virtual process. “What we can't do right now is bring a jury into the courthouse. When you can't even go to a restaurant to eat, the idea of bringing hundreds of people in to sit in a room together is not recommended,” she told ABC10 News.Courtrooms are being retrofitted with plexiglass barriers to protect everyone from jurors to defendants to court staff. Judge Alksne said other safety measures like social distancing will also be implemented, when appropriate.“Once you do resume the process of summoning jurors, what if they just don't feel comfortable? They fear the risk?” we asked. “Jury service is a duty that we hold in high regard. We can't have criminal justice service work without jurors so I would hope that by the time we actually pull jurors in and ask them to come down that unless they have a health condition that would make it unsafe here, that they would be willing to serve,” she responded.The court is still working through other complex issues like the possible need for more alternate jurors. “In other jurisdictions where they have tried to start jury trials up and down the State of California, one juror getting COVID-19 or having symptoms will send everyone home and you'll have a mistrial,” she added.Judge Alksne also said there are currently about 300 violent felony defendants in custody who are waiting to be tried. 1903
