TASHKENT, June 9 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Hu Jintao on Wednesday pledged efforts to enhance cooperation with Uzbekistan when meeting here with his Uzbek counterpart Islam Karimov.The two leaders also exchanged views on prospects of bilateral ties and on international and regional issues of common concern.Hu hailed the development of Sino-Uzbek ties since the two countries announced the establishment of friendly and cooperative partnership in 2004.China highly appreciates Uzbekistan's continued and firm support in issues concerning China's core interests, said Hu. Both sides should well implement the Uzbekistan-China natural gas pipeline project, boost cooperation in oil and gas exploration and development, and speed up cooperation in minerals, Hu said.Thirdly, the two countries should expand cooperation in new sectors, particularly in high technology and new technology, and work to establish a long-term trading partnership, Hu said.Fourthly, the two countries should deepen security cooperation and take severe measures against the "three evil forces" of terrorism, separatism and extremism. Law enforcement and security departments in both countries should continue to boost two-way cooperation as well as cooperation in the framework of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) to safeguard peace, stability and security of the two countries and of the region, Hu said.Fifthly, the two countries should also strengthen people-to-people and cultural exchanges to consolidate the foundation for friendship, said Hu, who welcomed more Uzbek students to study in China.Sixthly, Hu urged both sides to intensify multilateral coordination so as to safeguard the two countries' common interests.The Chinese president spoke highly of Uzbekistan's efforts in deepening cooperation among SCO member countries, enhancing the internal construction of the organization and boosting the organization's international status during its SCO presidency.For his part, Karimov hailed Hu's visit on the eve of an annual SCO summit as an important event in Uzbekistan-China relations and a milestone in the development of the friendly and cooperative partnership between the two countries.

UNITED NATIONS, July 7 (Xinhua) -- China on Wednesday called on the UN Security Council to address the root cause of the armed conflicts in order to better protect civilians in such conflicts, which often took place in regions with backward economic and social conditions.The statement came as Wang Min, the deputy Chinese permanent representative to the United Nations, was taking the floor at an open Security Council debate on the protection of civilians in armed conflicts."As the organ which has the primary responsibility for the maintenance of international peace and security, the Security Council is duty bound to address the issue of the protection of civilians in armed conflicts," Wang said.China supports the Security Council in its efforts to strengthen the protection of civilians in armed conflicts, he said, voicing his deep concerns with the fact that civilians are the subject of threat and violations in armed conflicts."The Security Council should pay attention to the root cause of the problem and invest more energy in preventing and controlling conflicts," he said. "At the same time, efforts should be made to put the protection of civilians in armed conflicts into the overall framework of the political process for the peaceful settlement of conflicts.""The responsibility for the protection of civilians lies primarily with national governments," he said. BEIJING, July 21 (Xinhua) -- Food poisoning in China killed 56 and sickened 2,452 others between January and May this year, the Ministry of Health said here Wednesday.In a report posted on its website, the ministry said 27 people, about half of the deaths, were killed by food poisoning at home.The deaths were mainly caused by the consumption of poisonous vegetables and pesticide- or poison-contaminated food.There were 68 cases of food poisoning at employee and student cafeterias nationwide in the five months resulting in the poisoning of almost 1,650 people and the deaths of 18. Bacteria-induced food poisoning and improperly cooked kidney beans were the main causes.Seven people were killed by excessive intakes of nitrite, a substance with an appearance similar to salt which can be used as a meat preservatives.The report urged food manufacturers to ensure food safety in accordance with law and called on the public to raise food safety self-awareness levels.

SHANGHAI, Aug. 14 (Xinhua) -- All entertainment activities at the Shanghai World Expo will be suspended Sunday in a show of respect for the victims of a massive mudslide in northwest China's Gansu Province.The Chinese national flags at the Expo Garden would fly at half-mast, and both the music broadcast at the opening and during the day would be stopped, the Shanghai Expo Bureau announced Saturday.Sun Weimin, the Expo Bureau's concierge director, said flags of the Bureau of International Expositions and the Shanghai World Expo would also fly at half-mast.Other Expo participants could decide for themselves whether to fly their flags at half-mast.The announcement was in line with that of the State Council, China's cabinet, which ordered suspension of all public entertainment and that Chinese flags fly at half-mast Sunday.The mudslide, which hit Zhouqu County, Gannan Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture, on Aug. 8 has killed at least 1,239 people and an estimated 505 are still missing.According to the Expo Bureau, the Gansu Pavilion will hold a "solemn and simple" ceremony starting 10 a.m. Sunday. The big screen in the pavilion will broadcast pictures and videos of disaster relief in Zhouqu County.On Saturday night, a performance from Chongqing Municipality will include a tribute to victims of the Aug. 8 mudslide.Almost 100 performances and cultural activities scheduled for Sunday would be suspended. A performance by the Panama national troupe, scheduled Sunday morning at the Panama Pavilion, would be held on Saturday evening, a pavilion spokesman told Xinhua.Sunday also marked the National Pavilion Day for Equatorial Guinea. Whether the scheduled celebration to be held was still under discussion, said the Expo Bureau.Since Aug. 8, volunteers at the Shanghai Expo have put stickers with four Chinese characters "May Heaven Bless Zhouqu" on their uniforms, to call for attention on the mudslide-hit area.
