SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A jury Monday began deliberating the fate of a man accused of fatally beating a senior citizen and going on a shopping spree with the victim's credit cards nearly two decades ago.Prosecutor Christina Arrollado asked jurors to find 39-year-old Edward Jamar Brooks guilty of first-degree murder.The 71-year-old victim, LeRay Parkins, was found in an alley off the 3700 block of 28th Street on Aug. 23, 2000. He died at a hospital three days later of injuries that included two skull fractures and brain bleeding.According to prosecutors, Parkins was out on a morning walk when he encountered Brooks and co-defendant Lester Bell.Brooks allegedly struck Parkins in the head with a bat, then rifled through the victim's pockets and took his wallet. Purchases were made with Perkins' credit card less than two hours later at a Spring Valley gas station and an Escondido clothing store, according to the District Attorney's Office.A baseball bat was later found at a Spring Valley home frequented by Bell and the getaway driver, Terrence Maurice Brown, but authorities lacked sufficient evidence at the time to arrest the trio for the murder, according to previous court testimony.The three were arrested in different states last summer: Brooks in North Carolina, Bell in Colorado and Brown in Arizona. Brown, 38, recently pleaded guilty to a robbery charge, while Bell, 39, pleaded guilty to voluntary manslaughter. Both men have yet to be sentenced.Brooks "took a baseball bat to the (victim's) skull," and his DNA was found on the victim's short pockets, Arrollado alleged in her closing argument.She said Parkins was a senior on his morning walk to stay healthy, and claims that he was "willing to get into a full-blown fight" with the defendants are false."Instead of coming home healthy and more vibrant, (Parkins) lay dying in alley, choking on this own blood," she told jurors.Arrollado also dismissed claims by Brooks' attorney, Robert Ford, that Bell and Brown were the real culprits who conspired against Brooks."If this is a frame-up job, it's the worst frame-up job in history," the deputy district attorney said. "These three set out looking for victims."Ford countered that if three people are involved in such a crime, accomplices "will say anything to save their own skin -- don't convict Mr. Brooks unless it's based on evidence." That evidence, Ford said, would include DNA on the baseball bat.Brooks admits to taking Parkins' wallet, and DNA evidence supports a robbery -- but not murder, the defense attorney said. Ford said Parkins deserves justice, but the DA's office "cannot prove any malice in the heart of Mr. Brooks.""I hope and pray that each and every one of you will agree on one theory, and that he's not guilty," Ford told jurors. "If he's an innocent man, he should be able to walk out that door."Ford has alleged that Brown actually beat Parkins with the bat and that he and Bell -- two "lifelong friends" who grew up in North Park together -- conspired to blame Brooks, the "odd man out."Ford earlier told jurors that as the three defendants prepared to leave, Brown got into a fistfight with Parkins, which the victim was winning, despite being much older than Brown. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A man accused of carrying out a series of credit union heists in San Diego County, stealing more than ,000 over a three-month span, pleaded not guilty Friday to 10 felony counts, including robbery and attempted robbery.Karl Doron, 43, was arrested Tuesday after he entered the Navy Federal Credit Union, 6755 Mira Mesa Blvd., and allegedly demanded cash from the employees, according to FBI Special Agent Davene Butler.Police officers and FBI agents had been monitoring Doron based on information they had gathered in an investigation that began in late December, when the first robbery occurred, Butler said.Upon leaving the credit union, he was taken into custody without incident and found to be carrying a loaded handgun, the agent said.RELATED: FBI searching for 'Gloved Robber' in series of credit union heistsDeputy District Attorney Andy Aguilar said Doron, whose alleged spree started three days after Christmas, used gloves, glasses, coats and other clothing to mask his identity. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A San Diego judge granted a preliminary injunction Friday sought by Hall of Fame horse trainer Jerry Hollendorfer against the Del Mar Thoroughbred Club, which banned Hollendorfer from participation in the wake of a spate of horse deaths.Hollendorfer, 73, was banned last month from Del Mar and sought legal intervention to allow him to participate at this summer's racing season.He argued that Del Mar officials did not provide an adequate reason for precluding him from racing. Frazier ruled that Del Mar "arbitrarily" denied Hollendofer's stall application without providing him a hearing on the matter.In court, Frazier noted that there was no definitive link tying Hollendorfer to the horses' deaths.Thirty horses died at Santa Anita during its most recent meet that started in late December and ended in late June. However, had avoiding negative publicity been the sole reason for the ban, Jaczko contended that would be a rational business justification on Del Mar's part, particularly with the heightened scrutiny the horse racing industry is currently facing."We're not saying he did anything to kill those horses. We're saying that in the best interest of our business, we don't want the attention, we don't want the clamor that we're not doing everything we can to change business as usual," Jaczko said.Jaczko also said the ban does not cause "irreparable harm" to Hollendorfer, as he has the ability to participate in other races, including several ongoing and upcoming races in California.Talking to reporters outside the courtroom, Hollendorfer said he was "very grateful" that Frazier ruled in his favor."I've lost an awful lot of business because of this," said Hollendorfer, who was not sure when he would begin participating in the Del Mar racing season.Hollendorfer said he had confidence in his training methods, but would be open to recommendations to improve horse safety."I would guess my stable does more with horses every day than any other stable that I know of," Hollendorfer said. "We examine every horse every day from head to toe. We take them out of their stalls and jog them down the road and make sure that they're sound before we even consider taking them to the racetrack. I think that we're doing plenty to ensure the safety of our stable and if somebody else has another suggestion how to do more, than I'm certainly willing to listen to somebody's opinion on that."Hollendorfer's attorney, Drew Couto, said his record with equine fatalities was not as severe as Del Mar claimed, and laid blame to Stronach Group racetracks, identifying them as the common denominator in the deaths of horses under Hollendorfer's care."Where did (Hollendorfer) have equine fatalities? He had them at Stronach group racetracks," Couto said. "They were horribly managed in our opinion this last year and that's the cause of these issues."Couto did not make any definitive statements regarding any legal steps towards contesting Santa Anita's ban."One step at a time," Couto said. "We had to take care of this issue. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A woman was shot when a verbal argument turned physical in the Valencia Park neighborhood of San Diego, authorities said.It happened just after 9 p.m. Saturday in the 5000 block of Palin Street, according to San Diego police Officer Robert Heims.``During the argument it turned physical with pushing,'' Heims said. ``There were gunshots and a 35-year-old female was shot in the foot.''The woman was driven to a hospital with a wound not believed to be life-threatening, he said.There was no suspect description, Heims said. 549

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Gov. Gavin Newsom announced Monday the state will send .7 million to support San Diego's proposed purchase of two hotels to provide more than 330 rental housing units for San Diegans experiencing homelessness.The funds -- part of the state's Project Homekey -- will go toward the purchase of the Residence Inn Hotel Circle and Residence Inn Kearny Mesa, to be considered by the San Diego City Council in October.The purchase of the two properties would create 332 permanent supportive housing units, with 72 of the units having two bedrooms, enough to provide housing for more than 400 individuals. According to a city statement, the units were determined to require minimal work before people could move in. The Hotel Circle property was built in 2003, while the Kearny Mesa property was built in 1990 and underwent a renovation in 2013."San Diego has proven we can put state dollars to action on programs and services that reduce homelessness," said Mayor Kevin Faulconer.
