They also found that lesbian and bisexual women are more than twice as likely as heterosexual women to report fair or poor health after having cancer.Researchers looked at three years of responses to the California Health Interview survey, which included more than 120,000 adults living in the state.Among other health-related questions, participants were asked if they had ever been diagnosed with cancer and whether they identified as gay, lesbian, bisexual, or straight.Out of 51,000 men, about 3,700 said they had been diagnosed with cancer as an adult. While over 8 percent of gay men reported a history of cancer, that figure was only 5 percent in straight men, a disparity that could not be attributed to differences in race, age or income.About 7,300 out of 71,000 women in the study had been diagnosed with cancer, but overall cancer rates did not differ among lesbian, bisexual, and straight women.Ulrike Boehmer, the study's lead author from the Boston University School of Public Health, said higher rates of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) may be related to the increased risk of cancer in gay men.However, the findings do not necessarily mean that being gay, lesbian or bisexual increases risk of cancer, said the researcher.

SINGAPORE, April 21 (Xinhua) -- Singapore's first locally-built satellite has been officially launched from a space center in India after a four-year delay, Singapore media reported on Thursday.The 105 kg fridge-size X-Sat was one of three riding on Isro's Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV-C16) from the Satish Dhawan Space Center in India on Wednesday. It will be used to take photographs to measure soil erosion and environmental changes on earth, local daily Straits Times said.The launch at 12:42 p.m. on Wednesday was the 18th successful lift-off since the maiden flight of PSLV in 1994.The satellite was designed and built by Singapore's Nanyang Technological University and Singapore's defense research body DSO National Laboratories.Now in orbit, the satellite is establishing communication contact with the ground control in Nanyang Technological University, a process that is likely to take up to a week.The launch capped more than nine years of hard work by scientists and engineers. BEIJING, Feb. 17 (Xinhua) -- China's new rules for reviewing proposed mergers and acquisition (M&A) deals by foreign firms on grounds of national security would benefit both Chinese and foreign investors, a Ministry of Commerce (MOC) spokesman said Thursday.The rules will facilitate the growth of foreign-invested enterprises (FIEs) in China and improve the quality and structure of foreign direct investment (FDI) flowing into China, MOC spokesman Yao Jian said at a press conference.The move also marked an improving legal environment for the security of China's business sector along with its opening-up drive, given that M&A by FIEs will increasingly become a trend in the coming years, Yao said."The adoption of the rules in China will also increase policy transparency and improve law-based government administration," said Yao.Yao's words came after the State Council, China's Cabinet, announced last Saturday that it was establishing a panel to check whether M&A deals struck by foreign firms in the country endanger national security.The panel will review attempts by FIEs to buy or merge with domestic companies whose business pertains to national defence, agriculture, energy, resources, key infrastructure, transport systems, key technology sectors and important equipment manufacturing industries, according to a statement published on the central government's website www.gov.cn.The review will be conducted by a foreign investment security review board under the cabinet, members of which come from the National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC), the MOC and other agencies.The new regulations, which take effect in March, come at a time when China is expected to see more M&A deals struck by foreign firms.Currently, inward M&A accounts for about 3 percent of China's total FDI, a sharp contrast with the global average level of more than 70 percent, said Yao. LOS ANGELES, April 29 (Xinhua) -- Clinical and teaching microbiology laboratories are linked with a nationwide salmonella outbreak in the United States that has killed one person and sickened dozens of others, health officials confirmed on Friday.Since August, about 73 people in 35 states have been sickened by salmonella bacteria, and some of those cases involve a strain of Salmonella typhimurium sold commercially to laboratories, officials from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) said in remarks published by msnbc.com.Illnesses have been tied to laboratories from Alaska to New York, with most reporting one or two cases. Five cases have been reported in Washington state and four in Minnesota.The first illness occurred late August and the most recent cases were reported March 8, according to the CDC.The patients include employees and students of the laboratories, as well as children in the homes of people who work or study at the labs.Patients ranged in age from less than one to 91, with a median age of 24, the CDC said.Cases that developed after March 19 may not yet be included in the total because of the lag time in assessing and reporting illness, said the report.CDC officials warned that bacteria used in the labs can be transmitted through contaminated lab coats, pens, notebooks, car keys and other items brought into the labs.The CDC is working with local and state health departments, the American Society for Microbiology and the Association of Public Health Laboratories to track the outbreak, the report said.Salmonella infections typically result in diarrhea, fever and abdominal cramps. They can be dangerous in very young children or people with compromised immune systems.
