SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – With Thanksgiving just days away, local health officials are seeing long lines at San Diego County COVID-19 test sites with many San Diegans hoping to get tested before the holiday.With the sudden surge of testing, some experts, such as UC San Diego Chief of Infectious Diseases Dr. Davey Smith, warn that getting a test is not enough to minimize the risk of spreading the coronavirus.“There’s a worrisome reason that people are planning to go visit their older relatives and they think they’re going to be 100 percent safe,” Smith said.Smith also said getting a test now could still give out a false negative result.“If I get tested now, it doesn't mean that I'm not infected, it just means that I'm not actively shedding the virus,” Smith told ABC 10News.On Monday, at San Diego International Airport, ABC 10News spoke to travelers who had the same thought.“I got tested about a week ago, just to make sure that everything is OK. And I know you can have it without having symptoms, so I did as much as I could to prepare before I came,” said Dana McLin.And along with getting a test, these travelers made sure they brought everything else they need to stay health while traveling this Thanksgiving holiday.Jan McLin said, “We are wearing our masks and we use hand sanitizers, sanitizing wipes, washing out hands constantly. This is necessary travel; when it’s necessary, you have to do everything not only for yourself but everyone around you as well.” 1481

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - When it comes to wrong-way crashes in San Diego County, 2018 is off to an unfortunate start.There have been numerous wrong-way vehicle crashes around the county nearly eight weeks into the new year, and authorities have not been able to pinpoint what exactly is causing an uptick in these types of crashes.According to Caltrans data, from 1995-2012, an average of 23 people died each year in wrong-way crashes on California roadways.San Diego had 13 wrong-way fatalities recorded in 2015 -- the last year Caltrans data was compiled for wrong-way crashes.In 2017, Caltrans launched a two-year pilot program in San Diego and Sacramento that focuses on ways to not only prevent wrong-way crashes but to also alert authorities in the event a vehicle is traveling in the wrong direction.As part of the test program, Caltrans has deployed reflective pavement markings on off-ramps and signs with flashing lights that turn on if a wrong-way vehicle is detected.Caltrans has not yet provided data collected from the program to determine the protective measures' effectiveness.Here's a look at wrong-way crashes on San Diego County roadways in the past 12 months.Feb. 20, 2018: Driver arrested on suspicion of DUI after wrong-way crash-- A driver was hospitalized -- and also arrested -- after police said he was driving in the wrong direction on Fairmount Ave. when he hit another vehicle. The duo excelled in subjects around STEM and it all started from there."If we're good at physics or chemistry, it's not good enough to just be good at it, you have to make use of it and make an impact with it. Since we're still students the best way to do it was to help other students reach their potential as well," said Vivian.So the two got busy and in July, they rolled out Level Up Academy, a six-week online course with an in-depth stem curriculum. They even included presentations, slides and assignments."I reached out to underclassmen in various clubs who spread it to their friends, then spread it to parents' coworkers." By the time their program started, 30 students were signed up. The fee was a donation made to their page on Rady Children's Hospital's website, all for COVID-19 efforts."We thought this was a really transparent way to show students and parents that we were actually donating because before we thought about donating to other hospitals but it didn't have this public page. Parents and students would just have to trust us we were donating profits there."They raised over ,000 in donations. Their course ended in August and school's back in session but they said hopefully another group will take over their program for another set of students next summer."I just think its so great how a simple idea I had in March, and uniting people together made an impact." 1796
