Recovering drug users are using exercise to help overcome their addictions through a unique recovery program.“I love it,” Trevor Blose says. “Nothing feels better than getting out and sweating a little bit and showing yourself you can do something maybe you couldn’t do a month ago.” Blose is battling a drinking problem that cost him his freedom. “Unfortunately, because of my actions, I had to go to jail for a little bit,” he says. “There’s nothing as eye opening as seeing the person you think you are being in a place surrounded by people who you don’t think you are.”In an attempt to take control of his life, Blose now surrounds himself with other recovering addicts at The Phoenix in downtown Denver, a self-described “free sober active community,” where the only membership fee is 48 hours of continuous sobriety. “The people here saw value in me before I saw value in myself,” says Andrew Brough, manager of The Phoenix’s Denver chapter. Brough says The Phoenix has help more than 2,600 people at their chapters across the country. He says that the toughest part of this recovery program is taking that first step. “We always say that door weighs a couple thousand pounds the first time you come in here,” Brough says. “But if you can get in here and experience that first Phoenix moment for yourself, it’s going to make a world of difference.”Some healthcare specialists, however, claim exercise alone isn’t enough overcome addiction. They say though being active can help, it’s just part of very complex road to recovery. Instead, counselors advise using exercise in addition to more traditional approaches like medicine, therapy and a 12-step program.“I’d been to multiple rehabs and AA, and I tried everything and it just didn’t work for me,” says member Drew Johnson. Johnson, who has tried various recovery programs available, says exercise is the only thing that’s worked for him. “I was a hardcore opiod addict,” Johnson says. “It started off with prescription pills and then it transformed to IV heroin use.” Johnson says The Phoenix has helped him get a grip on handling addiction. Students attending a vigil following a shooting at a school near Denver shouted "mental health" and stormed out of the event to protest politicians.Attendees walked out and chanted after Sen. Michael Bennet and Congressman Jason Crow spoke at the vigil Wednesday evening at Highlands Ranch High School, The Denver Post reported. It said several hundred students were at the vigil that went from a peaceful event to a demonstration, and included protests against the media and politicians.The students returned to the vigil held inside the gym, it said.The two suspects accused of carrying out a mass shooting at a Denver-area charter school made their first appearances in court Wednesday.Neither of the suspects -- 18-year-old student Devon Erickson and 16-year-old Alec McKinney -- were formally charged.Eighteen-year-old Kendrick Ray Castillo was killed and eight others were wounded in the shooting at STEM School Highlands Ranch. First-degree murder and attempted murder charges will be filed, said 18th Judicial District Attorney George Brauchler. He said he wants time to consider other charges.Erickson took the two handguns used in the shooting from his parents, according to a law enforcement source with direct knowledge of the investigation. Summer is in full swing, and with the warmer months comes the mosquitoes. Not only are the small insects pesky, they are considered the deadliest animal in the world, believe it or not. More than 700 million people around the globe get sick from mosquito bites, and more than 700,000 people die from those bites each year."We always see West Nile Virus peaks right after the Fourth of July weekend, because people have been outside and not protecting themselves," says Kylee Grenis, an expert on mosquitoes. Grenis helped us conduct an experiment to find out which bug repellent works the best.We purchased three mosquito traps. We sprayed one trap with DEET. The other with a top rated non-DEET spray called Skin So Soft by Avon. The third trap was a controlled trap with no spray.The traps were hung next to dry ice in a mosquito-infested park."We are going to hang some dry ice near those traps to simulate a human standing and breathing and hopefully that will help attract more mosquitoes to our traps," explains Grenis on the use of dry ice. After an hour, the trap sprayed with DEET had one mosquito. In the Avon-sprayed trap, there were no mosquitos. In the control trap, there were six mosquitos. The sprays kept the mosquitos away.As far as sprays go, Grenis says she still prefers DEET. "It is great at making you invisible to mosquitoes,” she says. “That blocks the receptors so that they can't detect your carbon dioxide signature." But, many consumers fear products with DEET are not safe. "I think a lot of the time people get it confused with DDT,” she explains of Dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane (DDT), a chemical compound banned in many countries due to the danger it poses to wildlife and the environment.DEET is safe to use and just like the Avon spray, and both sprays are effective in keeping mosquitos away during the summer time months. 1872
