SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — As temperatures warm up, there is some early research suggesting air conditioning units could increase the risk of spreading COVID-19.One team of researchers swabbed several kinds of air conditioning units and found traces of the virus on one out of every four samples.One of the authors, University of Oregon professor Dr. Kevin Van Den Wymelenberg, said the research “does give us some pause.”Air conditioning units bring in little outside air, particularly when temperatures are very hot, posing a risk that viral particles could be recirculated into rooms, Van Den Wymelenberg said.However, just because the study found traces of the virus in A/C units, it doesn’t prove people can actually get sick from the contaminated air because it’s not yet clear how many viral particles it takes to infect someone, he noted.“Nobody knows what that minimum threshold is so we need to take as many precautions as possible,” he said.Dr. Edward Nardell, a professor in the Departments of Environmental Health and Immunology and Infectious Diseases at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health, said air conditioning units can generate air currents that can carry large particles farther, similar to what researchers found contributed to the spread of the novel coronavirus disease in an air-conditioned restaurant in Guangzhou, China."You are not socially distanced as much, but you're re-breathing the same air that someone else just exhaled," Nardell said. "We call it rebreathed air fraction, and if someone is infectious, often asymptomatic, you're going to be rebreathing their small particles."This week, a group of 239 scientists from 32 countries asked the World Health Organization to update its COVID-19 guidance to reflect that the virus is airborne.On Thursday, the WHO released updated guidance acknowledging that airborne transmission can’t be ruled out, but stopped short of confirming that the virus spreads through the air.Instead, the WHO said the virus primarily spreads through droplet transmission, where larger particles come out of an infected person’s mouth, then fall quickly to the ground or onto surfaces. In airborne transmission, the particles stay floating for a long time.“I think they’re underweighting the importance of this airborne route based on the best available information,” said UC Berkeley Professor Emeritus William Nazaroff, one of the signatories of the letter to the WHO.He said in a poorly ventilated room, particles might linger for 30 minutes to an hour.Scientists say one of the best ways to protect yourself is to open windows, to increase the circulation of fresh air.Scientists say upgraded air filters in AC units and standalone air purifiers could also help.Germicidal lamps may also be effective, Nardell said. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- California's energy operator have issued a statewide Flex Alert ahead of anticipated high temperatures this coming weekend.The California Independent System Operator (ISO) is calling for voluntary electricity conservation, from 3 p.m. to 10 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 14."With high temperatures in the forecast, the power grid operator is predicting an increase in electricity demand, primarily from residential air conditioning use," the ISO said in a statement.In San Diego, an Excessive Heat Warning will be in effect from noon Friday until 8pm Monday from the inland areas to the deserts. The heat will peak on Friday and Saturday with temperatures ranging 5 to 15 degrees above normal.The above-normal temperatures and humidity will stick around through most of next week."Consumers are urged to conserve electricity, especially during the late afternoon and early evening, when the grid is most stressed due to higher demand and solar energy production falling. Gavin Newsom asking that Craig Peyer remain behind bars.In December 1986, Peyer -- then a California Highway Patrol officer -- pulled over Knott on Interstate 15 in the Rancho Penasquitos area. Peyer beat Knott, strangled her, and threw her body over a bridge.Peyer was eventually convicted of killing the 20-year-old San Diego State student in 1988.Peyer's next parole hearing isn't until 2027, but in their letter to the governor, Knott's family says they've learned inmates are being released from Peyer's prison because of COVID-19.“This is precisely NOT a person who deserves to be released early from prison for humanitarian reasons. Officer Peyer showed NO Mercy when he murdered my sister," Knott's sister wrote in her letter to the governor.ABC 10News reached out to California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation for clarification. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Caltrans is starting a yearlong pilot program in San Diego to reduce wrong-way driving.The agency has installed markings at 30 locations that include red arrows and "DO NOT ENTER" written across the pavement that are only legible when driving in the wrong direction onto freeway ramps.The markings will stay up until the end of the year, according to Caltrans.The agency says that a previous three-year pilot program helped reduce wrong-way driving by 44% in San Diego. The program utilized special reflectors, sensors, and illuminated signs in early 2018.Now, those specialized reflectors have been installed on hundreds of miles of highways, according to Caltrans."The number of wrong-way drivers decreased significantly during the initial pilot program," said Caltrans Director Toks Omishakin. "The addition of these markings, along with what we have learned thus far, will go a long way as we continue to study ways to deter wrong-way drivers."While wrong-way crashes only account for less than 1% of all crashes on California's highways, they are often among the deadliest, Caltrans said."We are constantly looking for ways to improve safety on the transportation system," said Caltrans (San Diego area) District 11 Director Gustavo Dallarda.
