BEIJING, April 19 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Vice Premier Li Keqiang on Monday urged food quality authorities to strengthen supervision in order to to significantly improve food safety, consumer confidence, and the quality and reputation of domestic food.He instructed officials to focus on the prominent issues of food additives, farm products, processing, distribution and import and export, livestock slaughter, the catering industry and health supplements."Food is essential, and safety should be a top priority. URUMQI, May 29 (Xinhua) -- China would spend 120 to 150 billion yuan (17.6 to 22 billion U.S. dollars) on transport infrastructure in its far-western Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region over the next five years, the regional government said Saturday.The money will be used to build new roads and renovate old ones to support Xinjiang's "leapfrog development" promised by the central government earlier this month, according to a statement issued after a conference of the Ministry of Transport and Xinjiang's regional government.The paved roads to be built or renovated will reach 75,000 to 80,000 kilometers in the region where there were just 15,000 kilometers of paved roads in place by the end of last year, said Song Airong, a regional Party official.Xinjiang's current 838 kilometers of highways will also be extended to 4,000 kilometers over the next five years, he said.The central government unveiled a policy package last Thursday to support the development of Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, setting a goal that the region should undergo a spurt in development so that by 2015 its per capita gross domestic product could reach the national average.Under the package, fixed asset investment in Xinjiang in the next five years will be more than double the amount in the current five-year plan that ends this year.

SHENZHEN, May 22 (Xinhua) -- Preliminary investigation shows that factors including failed romance, unrestrained gambling could be the reasons behind suicide of a Foxconn Technology Group employee Friday, said police authorities in south China's Shenzhen City.Nan Gang, 21, climbed to the top of a factory building in Foxconn's industrial complex in Longhua Township and fell to his death at 4:37 a.m., said Huang Jianwei, a spokesman of the Bao'an Police Station, of the Shenzhen Public Security Bureau.Nan's suspected suicide was the 10th of the kind ever happening at the Foxconn's Shenzhen plant since the beginning of the year.Police said they learned from investigations that Nan Gang's parents were divorced and Nan was the only child of the family. Nan's ex-girlfriend got married this year in February, and his new girlfriend also deserted him early this month.Nan was said to be ill tempered and fond of gambling, and was thus in deep debts before his death.According to the police, not long ago, Nan had fights with his co-workers, so he employed others to beat the co-workers, but was later blackmailed by the same group of people.Nan allegedly had said he would take revenge and even showed his intent to commit suicide before he fell off the building Friday.Police have already captured the suspects for blackmailing Nan pending further investigation.Shenzhen-based Foxconn's company profile on its website says it's the world's top electronics manufacturer with more than 600,000 employees and ranked 109 among the Fortune 500 companies in 2009. BEIJING, May 5 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao on Wednesday called for more efforts to cut emissions and conserve energy to meet the country's target set by the 11th Five-Year Plan.According to the plan laid out in 2006, China will cut its per unit GDP energy consumption by 20 percent compared with 2005 levels by the end of 2010.The task of fulfilling the goal was still tough , Wen said at a State Council meeting, adding that this year would be particularly difficult as the first quarter had already seen rising energy consumption per unit of gross domestic product (GDP) in the major industrial sectors.In the first three months, six major industries, including steel, power and non-ferrous, saw a 3.2 percent growth in energy consumption per unit of GDP, Wen said.  Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao (C) addresses a State Council meeting of conserving energy and cutting emissions in Beijing, China, on May 5, 2010.
