SAN DIEGO (KGTV) --Lanes of the southbound 805 freeway were closed Friday night, after a major crash north of the Home Avenue exit. San Diego police confirm an officer was nearly hit by a car while responding to the accident and made an urgent call for backup.The blue, four-door sedan involved in the crash was smashed up against an embankment when the 10News crew got to the scene. 10News Anchor Brian Shlonsky posted on the southbound 94, near the onramp to the 805, where officers were flagging traffic to notify them of the closure. 566
SAN DIEGO, Calif. (KGTV) - UC San Diego is a pilot school for an exposure notification system that alerts users if they’ve come in contact with someone who tests positive for COVID-19. It’s a partnership with the state of California and officially launched on campus Thursday.The system uses smartphone technology to anonymously tell people they may have been exposed. It does not track locations and is completely anonymous. It starts working when a person downloads the system on their phone and enables notifications. It then records proximity to other devices that also have the program downloaded. If two phones come in contact with each other for more than about 15 minutes and are closer than around six feet, it takes note of that. Then, if a person tests positive later, they can go in the program and click a button saying they tested positive, and their system sifts through all the devices that previously had extended exposure, sending those users alerts about the possible exposure.Doctor Christopher Longhurst, Chief Information Officer and Associate Chief Medical Officer for UCSD Health said the biggest factor that will impact effectiveness is the number of users.“We’d like to see 75% of that community or more adopting. Modeling done by Oxford and other universities has shown that if we can get over 50% adoption in a population, you can actually help to end outbreaks,” said Doctor Longhurst.As of Friday, about one day into the official launch, the school said 7,985 people had signed up. SAN DIEGO, Calif. -- Virtual interviews and job fairs are among some of the biggest changes when searching for a new job during the COVID-19 era. And the millions of newly unemployed Americans are vying for fewer jobs.Christy Schmidt, a 34-year-old who lives in Bend, Oregon, has been scouring job boards ever since she was let go by her employer. "The amount of jobs up there or jobs that are very close to a fit for me are just non-existent, and I have come to realize that there are tons of other wonderful qualified people applying for the exact same jobs I am," said Schmidt.She was working as an executive assistant for three vice presidents at Navis, a company that specializes in technology for the hospitality industry. Some of their biggest clients include hotels and resorts."It was literally my dream job. It was the best company culture I had ever been a part of, just some of the most brilliant people that were just so down to earth. I loved going to work every single day," said Schmidt. Schmidt thought working from home would be temporary, just during COVID-19, until the day managers called an all-team meeting."And it was very tough for them to tell us we no longer had jobs, that they were doing everything they could to make the company survive," said Schmidt.After months of searching, she finally found an opportunity that made her hopeful, only to learn it was a scam. When it came time for the virtual interview, the scammer instead wanted to have a text conversation over Google Hangouts. "All they want is personal information; they did not want to know anything about my experience or background," said Schmidt. The FBI says hiring scams have spiked during the pandemic.Now, Schmidt is considering moving out of the small town of Bend to go back home to California, where there are more jobs available. "Maybe I need to relocate myself just to be able to survive right now," said Schmidt. Tim Best, CEO of Bradley-Morris RecruitMilitary, says Schmidt is far from alone. "This isn't going away, so it's not even about, well this is what I need to do now. No, this is a competency we all need to develop because this is here to stay at some level," said Best. The Army veteran has spent the last two decades helping military veterans and their spouses find careers through massive job fairs at venues like Yankee Stadium.Now, they're going virtual."Really, no one understands what a virtual career fair is until they experience it," said Best. Employers market their brand in virtual chat rooms, which can lead to a video interview on the spot.While some sectors, like hospitality and tourism, will likely be slow to come back, essential jobs like delivery drivers are in demand. As well as IT, tech, customer service, online teaching, and construction jobs."I've seen this before in previous recessions, where people do rethink their career paths," said Best. The San Diego Workforce Partnership is offering on-demand training videos online. They're also connecting job seekers with affordable certificate programs to help people learn new skills. Workforce development partners in other cities are offering similar resources. Schmidt is broadening her search, considering jobs she might have overlooked before the pandemic."Knock on every single door because I know eventually one is going to open, and it's going to be the right fit for you," said Schmidt. SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — A judge ordered California's attorney general to release police misconduct records predating Jan. 1, when new transparency legislation took effect.San Francisco Superior Court Judge Richard B. Ulmer, Jr. on Friday also rejected arguments by Attorney General Xavier Becerra that his office should not have to release records of local law enforcement.The legislation was designed to guarantee public access to disciplinary records involving investigations into officer shootings, use-of-force incidents and incidents involving officer misconduct.The tentative ruling was a win for the First Amendment Coalition and National Public Radio member KQED-FM, which sued Becerra's office for records under the legislation."Judge Ulmer's order sends the clear message that the Attorney General is not above California law," said David Snyder, the coalition's executive director.In response, Becerra's office said Friday it would release records from before 2019 but only those regarding Department of Justice officers. The office said in a statement that requiring the office to release records involving other departments "would result in duplication of efforts."The judge ordered the attorney general's office to meet with the coalition and KQED to work out the logistics of releasing records.Ulmer said the 1st District Court of Appeal had already decided that the law is retroactive. He also dismissed the argument that making the attorney general provide records of local law enforcement would be burdensome.Ulmer said lawmakers could not have been oblivious to the potential cost of carrying out the legislation, and "the people will likely be agnostic as to which tax-funded agency foots the bill." 1724
SAN DIEGO (KGTV)- The 2019-2020 cruise season is officially underway in San Diego, and the Port of San Diego expects thousands of visitors to the region, having a significant economic impact on the city.The Port has 104 cruise calls scheduled, which is up from last year's numbers. Approximately 338,000 passengers will be on the cruises and Port officials say each home ported call has an average of million in economic impact."That doesn't just mean spending money on food and shopping, but that can be maintenance, repairs and things to the ship," said Adam Deaton, with the Port's cruise business development."It's a great, great uptick for San Diego's economy," said Deaton. "We're not in the summer so it's kind of the down season, so cruise is a great pick me up for the winter and fall months."The season began Tuesday with the arrival of luxury ship Le Soleal, from French Cruise company, Ponant.Also this season, Holland America, Disney Cruise, and Carnival Cruise Lines will be featured. Carnival has not been in San Diego since 2011 and its return was much anticipated.The Carnival Miracle will be at the Port starting in December for 12 trips including Mexican Riviera, Hawaiian Island, Baja Mexico and Panama Canal cruises.Starting October 4, Disney Cruise Line will offer 16 cruises from the Port of San Diego.
