SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - On Wednesday, ABC10 News interviewed San Diego County Superior Court Presiding Judge Lorna Alksne about this week's first criminal jury trial since all jury trials were halted in March.“We summoned 800 jurors and about 250 or so postponed their service like we told them to do if they felt uncomfortable or had a conflict or co-morbidity or something like that and of the remaining jurors we called in, only 41 showed,” she told ABC10 News and added, “The system doesn't work without jurors.” She went on to say, “I can only anecdotally think that people are unsure of public transportation or coming back Downtown to serve.”Wednesday marked the second day of the trial which was for an elder abuse case.Judge Alksne said that the courts have sufficient safety measures in place for jurors. “When they went back into the courtroom, they had these plexiglass barriers in between them if they're more than six feet apart and everyone wore masks and there was hand sanitizer everywhere. It's as safe as going to Costco,” she told ABC10 News.The courts have maintained that the only way to address the backlog of cases is with cooperation from San Diegans who are called for duty. She added, “What I [asked] the jurors yesterday was if you had a loved one who was incarcerated [and] pending trial and nobody showed up to do jury trial, how would they ever get their chance for their day in court?”Judge Alksne said that another trial is scheduled for next week and two are scheduled for the following week. The numbers of summonses will continue to increase. She explained that there's no plan to penalize people who do not appear for jury duty but that could change if turnout continues to be low. 1721

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- People on social media are outraged after video shows a security guard questioning a mother's immigration status in a Target parking lot. The woman who recorded and posted the video, Sonia Serrano Zavala, says the guard was asking the mother if she is here legally when she started recording. The unidentified security guard can be heard in the video saying, "You’re illegally here and you’re having babies and you’re probably on welfare."The woman, seen holding a baby in the parking lot, was reportedly asking for money. Midway through the video, the security guard says "it's a scam" and claims the woman has a car and a condo.The incident took place at a Target located in the Marketplace at the Grove Shopping Center. The guard does not work specifically for Target, but provides security for the entire shopping center. The company who hires the security guards for the mall said, "The behavior of this employee is not reflective of the standards we have set for our security professionals, and we will address it."WARNING: The video below contains graphic language.  1136

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Police are looking into an apparent road rage-related chase and collision involving two women that spanned the length of Interstate 8 between Mission Valley and Ocean Beach.Officers said the women were traveling more than 100 mph on westbound I-8 in Mission Valley before they exited in the Ocean Beach area.When both women got to Sunset Cliffs Boulevard, police said the driver of a silver car rammed the other driver’s white SUV several times. The SUV then forced the other car to collide with a center divide.The SUV’s driver got out of her vehicle and confronted the other driver; she reportedly told police she pepper-sprayed the silver car’s driver because she became aggressive.ABC 10News learned the pepper sprayed driver told police that she and the other woman were dating the same man.However, the SUV’s driver claimed she did not know the silver car’s driver.There is no word if anyone was arrested, as police are still trying to sort out the details. 991

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Parts of Balboa Park reopened Friday after the COVID-19 pandemic forced closures in March.Park officials said the following areas would reopen: Central Mesa (El Prado, Plaza de Panama, Cabrillo Bridge, Pan American Plaza), all parking lots, Prado Restaurant, Tea Pavilion, and Visitors Center.Tim Lu and his daughter Matilda have been looking forward to a bike ride at the park for a long time.They live nearby and drove by regularly ever since the park closed. Week after week, all they saw were empty streets and sidewalks.When they got the news that parts of Balboa Park were going to reopen, Lu wanted to make sure they were there for the first day. And he wasn’t alone, as others showed up equally as happy to see the park reopen.Sarah Beckman, director of the Balboa Park Conservancy, said, “This is part of people’s daily routines. This is a neighborhood park. It’s also a global destination but our friends have been missing this for a long time now.”While at the park or the trails, San Diego County and city health orders are still in effect. They have signs posted around the property to remind you. You have to wear a mask, practice social distancing, and if you are sick stay home.A way of life, Lu says he doesn’t mind.“Things haven’t changed. We don’t have a vaccine. A cure. So even though things are opening up we want to keep our progress going and keep things open and not have to shut down again,” said Lu.As for museums, they will reopen on their own schedules. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Police and other credit card experts are warning of a new scam being used to steal bank card information and PINs.Earlier this month, police arrested four people who installed small cameras on ATMs. They say there could be more.Experts say stand-alone ATMs at stores or in parking lots are the most enticing targets for the thieves, as are drive-up ATMs."Whenever we come up with a way to figure out how to thwart it, then the crooks can figure out how to zig past that zag," says SDSU Fowler College of Business Lecturer Steven Andres.Andres says the best thing people can do is avoid using cards altogether. Andres says to use apps like Apple Pay, which don't send any bank information during transactions."They don't actually send your real credit card number to the vendor that you're working with. Instead, a random number gets sent that's only valid for that transaction at that vendor on that minute of the day. So in the future if that vendor has their computer system hacked, that number's completely worthless," Andres says.Otherwise, Andres says to use a credit card instead of a debit card, that way you can dispute a charge and not have to wait for the stolen money to be put back in your account.He also advises people to stay away from drive-up ATMs where it's more difficult to cover your PIN as you type it in. 1354
