Authorities say a seventh grader who died by suicide inside a northeast Ohio middle school bathroom last week planned to carry out an attack on the school.According to Jackson Township Police Chief Mark Brink, the Jackson Memorial Middle School student admired the Columbine shooters and had an eight-step plan to carry out an attack. The boy "intended to conduct a school shooting and harm others," Brink said. On Feb. 20, police responded to Jackson Memorial Middle School in Stark County after receiving a call about a student who had shot himself in the boy's bathroom.According to the medical examiner's office, the boy died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head.Security cameras captured the 13-year-old on video coming out of the restroom with a .22 caliber semi-automatic rifle he had brought to school under his clothes. The boy went back inside the restroom and shot himself, police said.Investigators said it doesn't appear the boy shared his plan with anyone else, and he did not really have a presence on social media.Case of 13-year-old boy who shot himself inside Jackson Memorial Middle School has been ruled a suicide, according to the Summit County Medical Examiner. AURORA, Colo. — An Aurora police officer has been suspended for one week following a well-publicized incident in which the white officer pulled a gun on an Indian American doctor who was trying to park at a refugee center the doctor operates. The Sentinel reports that Officer Justin Henderson with the Aurora Police Department was suspended for 40 hours without pay and ordered to attend de-escalation training for his March 1 confrontation with Dr. P.J. Parmar.Parmar, who is Indian American, says he's disappointed with the punishment and that he believes his race affected how Henderson treated him.His attorney has said he plans to file a federal lawsuit against the city.In a June interview, Parmar told Scripps station KMGH in Denver that he wants to see reforms made in the Aurora Police Department. He said on March 1 that he was moving Boy Scout gear from the Mango House — a shared space for refugees and asylees — to another property, when he noticed a police car parked in his ground-level garage, partially blocking the exit. Pamar said he honked his car.Pamar then claims the officer jumped out of the vehicle, swore at him and pulled out a gun as he ran toward the car.Pamar then started recording the interaction on his phone. It shows Pamar asking Henderson to leave his property."No, I'm going to figure out whose property this is first," Henderson said.At one point, Parmar said Henderson pointed a gun at his face."The gun pointed at me — it was scary, but it's not what hurt the most," Parmar said in June. "What hurt the most was him questioning whether or not I owned that property."Parmar said what happened to him speaks to generations of trauma that people of color have faced in the U.S.See KMGH's report on the incident from June below. As we shield ourselves in any way possible from the novel coronavirus, there are some parts of the country handling social distancing better than others.“This is a public health problem; it’s not a private health problem,” explained Dr. Bhaskar Chakravorti, who leads the Fletcher Institute for Business at Tufts University. “If I get sick, I could make three other people sick.”Over the past few months, Dr. Chakravorti and his colleagues have been analyzing mobility data from across the country. What did he and his team discover? The top three states who were practicing social distancing the most were New York, New Jersey and Massachusetts. Nebraska, South Dakota, Arizona were among the worst when it came to practicing social-distancing procedures. Dr. Chakravorti says that has led to higher contagion rates in those areas.“In this post-pandemic moment, each state is going in somewhat a different direction as far as how it's managing the pandemic,” he added. In bigger cities with higher rates of infections, the study found that people responded better to restrictions because they could see the impact the coronavirus was having around them. Dr. Chakravorti hopes public health officials use his findings to make more uniform policies nationwide.“This whole issue of COVID has become a political issue, so even the act of wearing a mask has become a political statement,” he said. “You never want to mix politics with anything. You definitely don’t want to mix it with public health. That’s a dangerous combination.” 1534

As the USPS is collecting letters from children across the United States, someone will need to respond to all of those children. Starting Friday, the USPS will begin Operation Santa, which will allow adults to respond to letters written by children. According to the USPS, potential adopters can read the letters and pick one, or more, that they’d like to fulfill. USPS says for security reasons, potential adopters must be vetted by going through a short registration and ID verification process before they are allowed to adopt any letter. The USPS says that the program is intended to help millions of less fortunate children. The program is for every person of every belief, or non-belief, USPS says. This is the first time Operation Santa has gone nationwide because of the pandemic.USPS says children who want to be a possible recipient of holiday gifts can write a letter, put it in a stamped envelope with a return address, and send it to Santa’s official workshop address. Letters will be accepted Nov. 16 – Dec. 15.The address is:Santa Claus123 Elf RoadNorth Pole, 88888Those who want to respond to a child’s letter can do so by going to the Operation Santa website here. 1187
