SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - As San Diego County's back country communities brace for the prospect of losing power, political leaders are starting to take aim at the idea of pulling the plug on them.San Diego Gas and Electric has notified upwards of 30,000 customers that it could cut their power Thursday if it deems necessary to prevent a wildfire. At a news conference in San Diego Wednesday, Gov. Gavin Newsom praised SDG&E as a leader in wildfire prevention, but expressed frustration at the situation. He directed most of his anger toward Pacific Gas and Electric, which has cut off power to hundreds of thousands of customers in Northern California to prevent its equipment from starting wildfires. She said the utility is in communication with fire departments and has crews and arborists deployed across the county. "The population here in San Diego really need to be mindful that this is about their safety at the end of the day," Griffin said. SDG&E began the practice of cutting power in 2013. That's a big change from the 2007 wildfires, which investigators say happened as a result of SDG&E equipment. County Supervisor Dianne Jacob derided the utility, saying cutting power creates safety risks for seniors, those dependent on medical devices, and households that need to electrically pump well water. Class at the San Diego Civic Youth Ballet School in Balboa Park, dance is their escape.“I just love it cause it like brings me joy and it can take me to my happy place,” said Renata Scorza-Muniz.Renata has been taking regular ballet classes since she was 2 years old. But in February, her life changed.“It’s stressful, I guess, to be in the hospital,” said Renata.Renata was diagnosed with cancer, causing her to lose her vision and forcing her out of her regular ballet class.That’s when she turned to a class called Ballet for Me.“It’s just so fun to do,” said Renata.Ballet for Me is a tuition-waved class that is designed for kids with unique physical needs. Each student in the class gets paired up with a mentor to help guide them through each movement.“It just makes me so happy when I get to see students feel happy and free in class,” said Kerri DeNies instructor and creator of the class.This dance class helps the kids feel whole again. And all year they rehearse for their moment to shine and perform in front of a packed audience where they feel a little more joy and beam with confidence. 1213

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Chula Vista City Councilman Steve Padilla remains hospitalized on a ventilator but is now in stable condition, according to a family statement issued Wednesday. Padilla, who represents Chula Vista's District 3, was admitted at UCSD Thornton Hospital ICU last Thursday after experiencing difficulty breathing associated with COVID-19. The family said he required a respirator.“My dad is a fighter, and he’s fighting through this -- with the help of amazing doctors, nurses and healthcare workers who are caring for him," said the councilman's daughter Ashleigh Padilla in a statement Wednesday night."We’re hopeful that he’s reached a turning point and will be home soon," she said.No further details about his condition were given at this time.“I know he cannot wait to get back to serving the people and helping our entire community get through these tough times," his daughter said.Padilla told his constituents in a Facebook video post published March 14 that he had contracted the coronavirus. He appeared to be in good spirits as he told viewers that he was doing "very well" and "feeling well.""After recently experiencing symptoms, I was diagnosed as being positive for the COVID-19 virus, also known as the coronavirus," he said last Saturday.In a follow up statement that night, Padilla described having a fever, body aches, headaches, chills, that "came on very rapidly." With less than two weeks until Thanksgiving, the guidelines include things like physical distancing and wearing a mask when not eating or drinking. There are specific guidelines for counties in the purple tier, like San Diego County. Counties in the purple tier are required to gather outdoors. Health officials recommend no more than three households and limiting the gathering to two hours or less. Infectious disease specialists say the guidelines are strict, but necessary to slow the spread of the virus. Other recommendations include having guests frequently wash their hands and having only one person serve food and beverages, with a mask on. Older and at-risk individuals are advised not to attend.
