Seattle Mayor Jenny Durkan told protesters occupying several city blocks they are in no danger of being invaded by the federal government despite comments from President Donald Trump saying he is ready to “take back” the city.The protesters, who have seized control of Seattle’s East Precinct police station, are pushing the city to make significant reforms to policing. Best said she was fully aware that other police stations were destroyed by looters and rioters, but said she allowed for fences around the station to come down to build trust with the protesters.But the protests, Best said, have been responsible for significantly slowing police response to parts of Seattle's East Precinct. Best said police response time to calls of service was on average 15 minutes, which is three times longer than normal.“If that is your mother, your sister, your cousin, your neighbor’s kid that is being raped, robbed, assaulted and otherwise victimized, you’re not going to want to have to report that it took the police three times longer to get there to provide services to them," Best said.But Best said she too wants to give the protesters a chance to have their voices heard, as Best said that police departments are often “on the wrong side of good.”“We have to acknowledge a long history of abuses,” she said. 2734

San Juan Mayor Carmen Yulín Cruz said Friday the death toll from hurricanes that hit Puerto Rico is actually hundreds higher than official government counts."It appears that for whatever reason the death toll is much higher than what has been reported," Yulín Cruz said during an interview with CNN's Jake Tapper on "The Lead."The official death toll stands at 54, according to a November 1 statement from the government of Puerto Rico, but the number of dead may be almost as high as 500, Yulín Cruz said when asked specifically about the death count.Many hurricane victims haven't been included in that number due to their causes of death not being properly recorded or "being cataloged as dying of natural deaths," Yulín Cruz said."When they were, for example, hooked to a respirator, there's no power, the small generator that they had that gives up, and of course, they die of natural causes, but they are related to a lack of electricity," she said.According to a statement released October 28 by the government of Puerto Rico, 911 bodies cremated in the weeks after Hurricane Maria were the result of natural causes. But the average number of cremations in Puerto Rico in the same time frame is about half that, Yulín Cruz said.The secretary of the Department of Public Safety, Héctor M. Pesquera, said the cremations were authorized at the request of family members of the deceased. (KGTV) - A pedestrian was hit and killed Saturday morning while on a sidewalk in San Marcos, according to the San Diego Sheriff’s Department.The woman was walking on the 500 block of E. Mission Road around 11 a.m. when she was hit by a black BMW that jumped the curb. Skid marks show the car first tried to stop on the asphalt, then hit the curb, a teenage girl, a tree then a wall. Witnesses said the driver is a baseball player and senior at Mission Hills High School.7-Eleven employees told 10News, the victim is also a student. They said she was at school Saturday morning for dance team rehearsal and walked over to the 7-11 on Mulberry on her break to buy some snacks. On her walk back to school, they said she was hit and killed.Friends of the young woman gathered at the crash site to pay their respects, lay flowers and light candles Saturday night. The driver was not injured and stayed on scene to cooperate with investigators.The cause of the crash is under investigation.Students say that stretch of Mission Road is known for speeding. While the limit is 45 mph, they say the flow of traffic is often 10 miles above that. 1206

(CNS) - Kobe Bryant's widow, Vanessa, responded Thursday to a lawsuit filed against her by her mother demanding financial support and claiming the late Laker legend had vowed to take care of her financially for life.In a statement posted online, Vanessa Bryant accused her mother -- Sofia Urbieta Laine -- accused her mother of trying to "extort a financial windfall from our family." Bryant said she and her husband long supported her, allowing her to live in their properties free of charge."She was a grandmother who was supported by me and her son-in-law at my request," Bryant said. "She now wants to back charge me per hour for supposedly working 12 hours a day for 18 years for watching her grandchildren. In reality, she only occasionally babysat my older girls when they were toddlers."Bryant said she has tried to make peace with her mother to no avail."Earlier this year, I was looking for a new home for her and, a week later, she went on television and gave an interview disparaging our family and making false accusations while living rent-free in a gated apartment complex in Newport Coast," she said.
