There's a new warning about makeup. A watchdog group says it has found asbestos in several products, sold in a store targeted to teens and young girls. What do you think of when you hear the word asbestos?“I think of like commercials like where your loved one has been exposed to asbestos and you die,” one woman says. “I'm like, 'Oh my God,' it's terrible.”Another woman said, “Like in a house that's like shut down forever” she says. “There's asbestos in a house.”You don't usually think of makeup.Danny Katz with U.S. PIRG, a consumer watchdog group said it tested more than a dozen make up products and found "high levels of asbestos" in three. They're all sold at Claire's, a store with products aimed toward girls and young women.“It's completely unacceptable to have asbestos in these products,” Katz says. “Asbestos if you inhale it or ingested it can lead to lung cancer it can lead to mesothelioma, which is cancer of the internal organs, and if you apply it over skin over time it can also increase the risk of skin cancer."Asbestos is a naturally occurring mineral that can be found in talc, a common product in many makeup products. But Katz says it's a company's responsibility to make sure the talc it uses hasn't been contaminated.“We need Claire's to remove these products from the shelves and we need them to figure out how asbestos got in their products to begin with,” Katz says. “We need Congress and the FDA to take action. We need to ban asbestos from beauty care products and makeup.”Right now, Katz and U.S. PIRG are urging us to avoid products with talc until federal laws change.It's not the first time Claire's has come under scrutiny for this. This year, the "Annual Salute to Women in Sports" is going virtual.For the first time, the event will be streamed online for free. Those who will be recognized this year include the athletes and leaders who are using their voices and platforms to push for equality and justice.Alana Nichols is no stranger to adversity."I started off on a rocky foot, and I had every opportunity to go off the beaten path," Nichols said. "Whether that be drugs and alcohol or whatever that looked like or just hanging out with the wrong people."But Nichols says, every time, sports would reel her right back in. She was a fastpitch softball star and was on her way to play in college when a snowboarding accident left her paralyzed."In a moment my life was changed completely. I was hoping to go to college on a softball college scholarship; I had the world at my fingertips, and all of a sudden, I'm 17 years old and paralyzed," Nichols said.For a short time, Nichols lost her way without sports. Then, she discovered wheelchair basketball and says that's when she found herself again."That's one of the beauties and the magic about sport, is it makes you feel good," she said. "It makes you feel good to move, and everybody, regardless of their ability, should have the right and the opportunity to figure out how to move and to play."Fast forward to today, and Nichols' athletic resume is stacked: A three-time gold medalist, a dual-sport athlete in wheelchair basketball and alpine skiing, the first female American to win gold in both the summer and winter Paralympic Games."Sports absolutely changed my life, and it continues to benefit me in so many ways," Nichols said.Nichols is also a mother and is the current president of the Women's Sports Foundation, an organization that works to give everyone a chance to play."A lot of what we do is look at the general landscape of what's going on for girls and women in sports and asses the needs of what is not being met and help promote equality and justice in the sports world for girls and women," she said.This year's theme for the Annual Salute to Women in Sports is "Speak with Sport," which 2014 Olympic Ice Dance Champion Meryl Davis describes as celebrating what sports can do for the world."The world of sport, women in sport is so important and so getting a chance to come together and celebrate what sport can do for the world, uniting us and inspiring us is particularly important right now," Davis said. "I'm thrilled we'll get together virtually and do that."Davis started ice skating when she was five. After her Olympic win, she's spent her time traveling, touring and advocating for sports and women in sports.Like Nichols, she'll be part of the virtual salute, which supports the Women in Sports Foundation and many programs that expand access and opportunities for all girls and women in sports."We're hoping to raise .3 million, of course, but this gives us an opportunity to reach so many young women that wouldn't have ever been able to see what the women's sports foundation is about," she said.Nichols says it's the biggest night for Women in Sports, and it's a chance to celebrate the voice they're giving to the voiceless.The event will take place live on Yahoo Sports on Oct. 14. 3253

This afternoon around 3 pm, what police say appears to be a stray bullet came through one of our preschool classrooms. Thankfully, no children, teachers, or staff were injured.Our teachers immediately took the children to the chapel, locked down the campus, and called police. Officers arrived shortly after the incident and are now conducting their investigation. At this point, we don't have any information from the police on where the bullet came from but they do assure us that there is no ongoing risk. Given that the bullet fell just inside the window, it appears to have been fired at a great distance, and not be a targeted shooting, according to the police.All of our parents have been notified and are coming to pick up their children now. The school will be closed tomorrow. Out of an abundance of caution, the St. Petersburg Police will be providing additional patrol and security.We are extremely grateful that no one was injured and appreciate the fast action of our teachers, staff and the St. Pete Police to keep everyone safe. 1052

Three Florida police officers were sentenced to prison this week for intentionally making false arrests for burglary, according to the Department of Justice.Former Biscayne Park Police Chief Raimundo Atesiano worked with three former officers, Guillermo Ravelo, Charlie Dayoub and Raul Fernandez to falsely arrest several victims to?keep their?burglary clearance rate at 100%, according to the Department of Justice. One of the victims was a teenager.Throughout Atesiano's tenure as the Biscayne Park police chief, he encouraged officers to falsely arrest individuals with no evidence or probable cause to cover for all reported burglaries, according to the DOJ."These three police officers from Biscayne Park disgraced themselves and damaged the public's trust in law enforcement," Special Agent in Charge of FBI Miami Robert F. Lasky said in a statement.Following directions from Atesiano, Ravelo falsely arrested a victim known as "C.D." in January 2013, and another victim identified as "E.B." in February 2014, on burglary charges without any legal standing, according to the Department of Justice.Ravelo was sentenced Thursday to 27 months in prison. Family members and friends at Ravelo's sentencing described him as a devoted father who was active in church,?the Miami Herald reported.In an unrelated incident, Ravelo responded to a traffic stop in April 2013. During the stop he arrested and used unreasonable force by punching the handcuffed driver, according to court filings.Under similar direction from Atesiano, Dayoub and Fernandez falsely arrested a teen referred to as "T.D." in June 2013.Dayoub and Fernandez were each sentenced to 12 months in prison earlier this week for their part in falsely arresting 16-year-old "T.D." for four unsolved burglaries, per the DOJ. The officers cooperated with the government and directly implicated Atesiano."This absolute abuse of power by all three officers violated every aspect of the oath Ravelo, Dayoub, and Fernandez took the day they became police officers," State Attorney Katherine Fernandez Rundle said.Atesiano pleaded guilty to a conspiracy charge. He is scheduled to be sentenced on November 27. 2172
