SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A heart transplant saved his life but took away a San Diego doctor's ability to treat his patients. That is until technology gave him that back too. "I can't be around sick people because the immunosuppressant medications I have to take for the rest of my life will cause me to get sick much more easily," said Dr. Murray Alsip.For five long months, Dr. Alsip sat in the ICU, waiting for a heart. He'd been living with a serious heart condition for 17 years. After several false alarms, his call finally came. The doctor would soon receive 20-year-old Mathieu Bergeron's heart; the young man died tragically in a skateboarding accident. Alsip was able to meet his donor's mother eight months after the transplant. "She's such a wonderful person, a giving and caring person. That meeting was wonderful, she had so much to say about him and the things he liked to do and about the person he was and about his energy," said Dr. Alsip. With his new heart beating strong, Alsip could once again do many of the things he loved, liked hiking. And while he could no longer practice in an office, Alsip knew he had to continue practicing medicine somehow. So he looked into a more modern form of medicine and discovered the telemedicine provider MDLive. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A medical helicopter transporting a heart from Grossmont Hospital for transplant crashed on the helipad of a Los Angeles-area hospital on Friday.The AgustaWestland A109 medical helicopter flipped onto its side after experiencing a hard landing on the roof of Keck Hospital of USC at about 3:15 p.m., according to a statement from the hospital. Three people on board, the pilot and two medical personnel, escaped without major injuries. Nobody on the ground or in the hospital was injured, the hospital and FAA said. Patient care at the hospital was not interrupted.The helicopter was carrying a heart from Sharp Grossmont Hospital in La Mesa, according to helicopter service provider Helinet. The hospital said in a statement that the organ was safely delivered to the intended patient in time for surgery.“We are fully cooperating with the NTSB and FAA on their investigations,” said Helinet COO and President Sean M. Cross. “Our company prides itself on professional operation and maintenance of aircraft as core values - the safety of our customers and pilots is always our top priority. We are happy that at this time there appear to have been no serious injuries.”The FAA and National Transportation Safety Board are investigating the crash.Helinet says it completed more than 1,300 helicopter air ambulance missions in 2019. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A local retiree is back home and recounting how a trip of a lifetime turned into a painful nightmare during a ride on a tour bus in Africa.Three weeks later, the pain remains constant. But Jeannette Craig, 68, is grateful."Just so glad to be back home," said Craig, from her hospital bed at Kaiser Permanente San Diego Medical Center.After saving up for more than a year, the Santee woman set out on her dream vacation to southern Africa in September. She was on a tour bus headed to an elephant preserve in the country of Lesotho when the bus overturned, killing three and injuring the 12 others on board.RELATED: San Diego retiree injured in African tour bus tragedy"I was in shock. Things flying everywhere, people screaming. I was screaming, because I was hanging upside down. The guide couldn't unlatch me out of the seat belt, so he pulled me out and I dropped 4 feet," said Craig.Wearing that seatbelt, a habit of hers, saved her life. She says she'll never forget the grim sight of the injured mixed with the dead, as she was transported by helicopter to a clinic, then taken to another in South Africa.She was diagnosed with a fractured pelvis, a shattered leg and torn ligaments, and broken ribs.After her trip insurance initially refused to cover a medical flight home, her family got involved and eventually, the insurance covered the flight. Craig arrived a few days ago.At Kaiser Permanente, doctors would diagnose additional injuries, including blood clots in her leg and lung, and broken bones in her spine and chest.Craig faces a long difficult recovery. The adventuresome retiree is ready to face it."I look forward to physical therapy, I hope within a year, I'll be hiking," said Craig.That recovery will be a long one. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A San Diego company says they have the solution to make people recycle more and get back the money they spend on redemption fees. One Earth Recycling wants to put the redemption centers in high-traffic areas like malls and grocery stores, rather than their usual spots in industrial areas of the city."Our goal is not to try to exceed people's expectations of recycling, we're trying to develop a whole new category of recycling," says One Earth CEO Josh Turchin.RELATED: California considers overhaul of bottle and can recycling programEvery year, Californians leave hundreds of millions of dollars on the table because of unredeemed cans and bottles. Turchin says the biggest problem is that it's not easy to find redemption centers, and they're not always the most welcoming of places."This program has been hijacked by opportunistic operators who have just strip-mined the model and operate it as inexpensively as possible," he says.To counter that, Turchin plans to open 100 small-scale redemption centers at malls and grocery stores across California. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – A man was fatally shot by San Diego Police as officers responded to calls of vandalism in the Mountain View neighborhood early Monday morning.According to police, officers were called to the 300 block of South Pardee Street just before 4:30 a.m. after receiving reports of “a violent disturbance involving a weapon.”Residents at the home were woken up by a man they say ripped a metal curtain rod from the window and began breaking windows and other objects.“Fearing for their safety, they asked another resident to call 911. A neighbor also heard the commotion and called 911 reporting it sounded like someone was being tortured,” police said.When officers arrived, police say they gave the man directions in English and Spanish but received no response. According to police, that’s when the man crawled through a broken window before running towards officers with a metal pole.“Fearing for their safety, one officer fired a bean bag round, one officer fired a Taser, and one officer fired several rounds from his service pistol.
