Ever since their older brother competed in the Scripps National Spelling Bee years ago, twin brothers Garrett and Pierce Bryner have dreamed of making it to the bee — together.This year, they’ll see that dream become reality. “It’s kind of historical, I guess you’d say,” said Garrett, who made it to the national bee — without his brother — last year.Previously, twins would never have been able to make it to the bee together, as one would have always beaten the other out. I think it’s really a nail-biting experience.”Garret and Pierce say they can be competitive when it comes to studying. "Sometimes the other one jumps in tries to spell the word before the other one,” Pierce said. Ultimately they hope for the best for each other.“I just cheer him on,” Pierce said.They’ve been studying as much as they can, Liz said, but as eighth grade boys, surrounded by the rugged landscape of Utah, their attention span only lasts so long before they want to get back outside and hop on their bikes.“I don’t think we’ve ever gone longer than probably 90 minutes at a time,” she said. “That’s about as long as anyone’s been willing to do.”“To know that they can both understand what it’s like to be there at the national bee to compete, and it’ll be something they share,” she said. “The fact that they can share this experience is just incredible as a mom.”ESPN, which broadcasts the bee, has seen viewership numbers for the annual contest that have hovered around one million people. (KGTV) - Students in the San Dieguito Union High School District won't be returning to campus in January.Monday morning, the school board voted to confirm that it will not continue with its reopening plan that would have brought students back on campus one day a week beginning on January 4th, with the option of returning five days a week on the 27th.The move comes after the union representing the teachers filed a lawsuit last week to block the return.Jason Barry's daughter is in 7th at Earl Warren Middle School. She was looking forward to returning to class."Here we are again, kicking the can down the road. I hope this isn't a pattern that is going to continue," said Barry.Barry broke the news to his daughter Monday after the board vote. "She's gone from, as this whole thing has gone on, she's gone from tears to frustration to just quiet," said Barry.Newly elected Trustee Michael Allman was the only board member to vote against ratifying the settlement reached last week with the union."We offer all this accommodation so that these essential workers, who are guaranteed the highest paid in the county can teach our kids, and they say thank you by filing a lawsuit , and then they offer to settle as they hold the kids as bargaining chips and I just don't want to reward that behavior," said Allman during the meeting which was held via Zoom.The California Teachers Association filed a legal petition on behalf of the San Dieguito Faculty Association. ESCONDIDO, Calif. (KGTV) - Plans are underway to reinvigorate Escondido's historic downtown, with new businesses and plans to make the area more pedestrian friendly. One of the new ventures is the first-of-its-kind. "Escondido now has really started to invest a lot of time, a lot of effort, and they're putting a lot of money into the downtown district," said Nick Corona, a nationally recognized homebrewer who lives in San Marcos.When Corona started homebrewing in 2012, the dream was always to start a brewery, which he named Five Suits Brewing. Now that dream is coming true in a way he couldn't have envisioned back then. "We're looking to hopefully become a little bit more of a draw for Escondido."The plan is to house four different businesses under one roof, three of which are craft beverage manufacturers: beer, gin, and mead.The gin distillery is Stoke Distilling Co. and the meadery is Good Omen. "Nobody else in California and I don't even think in the U.S., has a storefront place that you can go to that has a brewery, a winery, and a distillery, with a restaurant all in the same location," said Brian LaMere, Owner of Good Omen.The owners of Carlsbad's Notorious Burgers will be supplying the food, which will consist of craft tacos and Mexican street food.
