Student loan borrowers were targets for scams before the coronavirus pandemic hit. The longer people struggle, the more desperate they become, and that’s when scammers and fraudsters thrive.“They’re using the same playbook, but more aggressively,” says Seth Frotman, executive director of the Student Borrower Protection Center, a Washington, D.C.-based nonprofit.There’s no single scam related to coronavirus relief or specific company to pinpoint that is being prosecuted right now, says Leslie Tayne, a debt-relief attorney and founder of Tayne Law Group. But fraudsters are still out there.There are two main types of scams, says Frotman. In one scam, a company will charge to enroll you in a benefit you could have accessed for free, such as a federal income-driven repayment plan.Tayne says she most often sees scammers promising to get borrowers into a loan deferment program in exchange for payment.In another scam, you’re promised something too good to be true — like forgiveness — in exchange for payment. Then they take your money and run.“It used to be called the Obama Loan Forgiveness scam, and now there’s the CARES Act Forgiveness scam,” says Persis Yu, director of the nonprofit National Consumer Law Center’s Student Loan Borrower Assistance Project.“Borrowers should always look upon advertising that is promising forgiveness with skepticism,” says Yu. No student loan forgiveness was included in the March coronavirus relief package.How to figure out what is legitAs you’re assessing what is real and what is not, take a beat to independently verify a company on third-party sites like the Better Business Bureau’s. Here’s what else you can do:See if there are news stories about scams alongside a business’s name in an online search. Remember: Anyone can pay for a domain name and start a website. Logos, addresses and mailers are easy to replicate, too.Be wary of solicitations that arrive in your inbox or that you see on social media ads. Even if you’re contacted by a party that has your personal information, it doesn’t mean it’s a legitimate organization, says Tayne.If you get a robocall regarding student loan repayment during the coronavirus pandemic, don’t call back. The Federal Communications Commission has seen these and is warning consumers not to fall for these scams.Real relief measures available for borrowersThe coronavirus relief package did include provisions for most federal student loan borrowers, but not private loan borrowers. Individual private lenders are offering benefits such as short-term emergency deferment or waived late fees.Federal loan borrowers are in the midst of a six-month automatic forbearance — with no interest — retroactive to March 13 and lasting through Sept. 30, 2020. Borrowers with loans in default also get relief from collection activities like wage garnishment.However, the implementation of these benefits hasn’t been smooth, says Yu. The National Consumer Law Center and another nonprofit, Student Defense, sued the U.S. Department of Education over allegations that the department continued garnishing wages despite the provision in the law that prohibits it.Implementation mistakes have left borrowers more vulnerable to getting scammed, says Yu.“They’re desperate, and they might be entitled to relief and they’re not getting it,” she says. “Our policymakers and the Department of Education need to step up to get this right so borrowers are not driven to companies leeching off their desperation.”You should be receiving all relief automatically for federal loans. If you’re not, contact your servicer and make a complaint in writing.What to do if you’ve been scammedIf you’ve been scammed, the first thing you need to do is get control of your accounts.“One common iteration of these scams is the company will take over the FSA ID or servicer account and redirect any communications to that company,” says Yu. (The FSA ID is the unique username and password used to log into the federal student aid online system.)? If you’ve given a scam company your password, change your password. You may need to change the email address your account is linked to.? Make sure to report the scam to authorities as well, says Tayne, and hold onto copies of those reports.? The Federal Trade Commission, your state attorney general and the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau are options for reporting scams. Each one actively pursues student loan scammers, but they rely on borrowers to self-report.? (KGTV) - Chaos erupted in the middle of a youth soccer tournament in Temecula Sunday evening after reports that someone allegedly pulled out a gun during a confrontation with other spectators, witnesses and the CEO of the tournament told 10News.10News has learned that one of the teams is from Chula Vista. The incident happened at the Albion Development Showcase tournament at Galway Downs in Temecula, witnesses told 10News.Players from opposing teams began shoving each other during one of the finals matches, one parent said. A family member then stepped onto the field and punched one of the players."There was a lot of fouls going on and I could see it was heating up," spectator Robert Hernandez said. "So one of the brothers from the Albion team rushed onto the field and just cold-cocked one of the other opposing players and this kid was about three years older."Hernandez said the breach onto the field incited more than a dozen men to join in, creating a brawl. He said, at one point, a man walked away from the scrum and grabbed a camouflage backpack.RELATED: Parent speaks about violent confrontation at Temecula soccer tournament"The entire field was just rushing out to the sidelines, kids were running, crying, parents were pulling their kids, dragging them," spectator Robert Hernandez said. He was on the sidelines waiting for his niece to play in the finals.Word of the melee quickly spread across multiple fields where teams, ages 8 to 15 years old, began sprinting off the fields."Someone's telling him don't do it, don't do it... They're right in front of us and we're like what's going on? And we're like this guy must have a weapon," he said. The same thought echoed through the crowd, inciting screams and sending kids running.The father of the player that was punched to the ground told 10News that the boy is a 10-year-old from Otay Ranch. He says the spectator that ran onto the field and struck his son is from the Los Angeles-based Azteca Soccer Club, not the Chula Vista Albion team.The father said his son sustained a minor head injury as a result of the attack. He described the assailant as being a possible teenager.Referee Alex Hansen was on another field and saw the stampede. "At first, I thought it was actually a bee swarm and so I thought we were going to hit the deck or something, but everyone kept saying, 'Shooter! Shooter! Run!' So we just had to run to the parking lot," Hansen said.He was immediately concerned about his 15-year-old brother who was refereeing near the commotion. He found out later his brother and players were hiding in a neighbor's garage.He said the kids were distraught, crying and asking for their parents. Witness accounts on social media reported that some players were temporarily separated from their parents causing more alarm.One of the players at the tournament, Luis Cruz, from Los Angeles, was on the field about 10 minutes into his championship match when the commotion began. He told 10News he was playing a few fields away but was able to hear the screams and saw people running. That's when he ran for safety."Everyone screamed 'run' and our coaches told us to just run and jump," he told 10News. "We all did and ended up on the other side of the fence huddled in the bushes with our coach and the team we were playing against.Hernandez said he never saw a weapon, but the man was detained by Temecula Sheriff's Deputies for a short time.The CEO of the Albion Development Showcase, Noah Gins, said the person that breached the field was a brother of the opposing team from Los Angeles who hit the Albion player.Gins said deputies never found a weapon and in his 40 years of experience he's never seen anything like this. He said he spoke with California State Soccer Association South and wants stronger consequences for anyone who goes onto the field to discourage this kind of behavior.Hernandez, a former coach, hopes parents reel in their enthusiasm at games, "Some of these parents get really emotional, they need to know it's just a game. Ten people have died after a Florida nursing home failed to evacuate its residents, who suffered for days in oppressive heat with no air conditioning after Hurricane Irma, according to the Hollywood Police Department.A 93-year-old man died on Tuesday, and a 94-year-old woman died on Wednesday -- adding to eight who were found dead last week at the Rehabilitation Center at Hollywood Hills, or who died after being evacuated to a hospital.The exact causes of death have not been reported, but a number of the 141 residents who were evacuated were treated for heat-related issues. An ongoing criminal investigation is underway.Nursing home residents sweltered in hazardous conditions after Hurricane Irma, which felled a tree that knocked out the transformer powering the air conditioning system. Many were moved into the hallways, next to fans and spot coolers. One video obtained by CNN shows a naked woman sitting in the hallway on what appears to be a hospital bed.Despite multiple calls between the nursing home and state authorities, at no time did the nursing home report that their patients were in danger or that they needed to be evacuated, according to a report on Tuesday by Florida Governor Rick Scott's office. The state advised managers "multiple times" to call 911 if such a situation arose."Something they failed to do," the 159-page report said."This facility is failing to take responsibility for the fact that they delayed calling 911 and made the decision not to evacuate their patients to one of the largest hospitals in Florida, which is directly across the street," Scott said in a statement.Last week, the nursing home expressed its sympathy for the families of the deceased and said it is "fully cooperating with all authorities and regulators to assess what went wrong." A moratorium was imposed on the facility that prevents it from admitting any patients."This healthcare facility failed to do their basic duty to protect life," Scott said.
