SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — The County Board of Supervisors voted Tuesday to send a letter to Gov. Gavin Newsom requesting they be allowed to reopen the local economy.The board voted 4-1, with Supervisor Nathan Fletcher voting "no," to take further steps into reopening amid the coronavirus pandemic. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — The California Coastal Commission Wednesday signed off on a demonstration of the lighting project that would illuminate pillars of the Coronado Bay Bridge.The project will include installing lights along four pillars of the bridge, which will be tested during one week in June. Following the test, an environmental impact study will be conducted.The tests are part of a larger effort for a proposed artist-designed lighting project that would span 30 pillars of the 2.12-mile bridge. The Port of San Diego is trying to raise between - million to complete the project by 2022.At completion, the Port hopes to have a finished lighting display by artist Peter Fink, meant to serve as a gateway to the region and in a variety of scenarios using its programmable LED displays. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The National Weather Service warned of minor coastal flooding ahead of a King Tide set to hit the San Diego County coastline Monday and Tuesday.The event forced the agency to issue a beach hazards statement from Sunday night through Tuesday evening.Surf will begin to build late Sunday, peaking Monday and Tuesday. By Tuesday night, the surf is expected to diminish, the agency said.High tides Monday will be 6.9 feet at 8 a.m. High tide on Tuesday will be 6.8 feet at 8:40 a.m.The agency warned that the King Tides will create water run-up into some beach parking lots and other low-lying areas.Beaches most prone to flooding include Sunset, Seal, Newport, Oceanside, Cardiff, La Jolla Shores and Imperial Beach.Elevated surf will also create strong rip currents and dangerous swimming conditions, the National Weather Service says. 861
SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — The explosions that shook a La Jolla neighborhood late last week revealed the surface of a much deeper, bitter fight. The detonations happened behind the home of the late Alex Jvirblis, who died in August at the age of 82. Neighbors describe him as a quiet but pleasant individual, and recalled few interactions. Jvirblis had no spouse or children. What he did have, however, was a business called Curtis Technology. It's tucked away in an industrial part of Sorrento Valley. Curtis Technology offers metal forming, cutting and finishing operations, which requires the use of chemicals. A woman named Daksha Dave is listed as its business contact online, and as treasurer with the Environmental Protection Agency. His will gives the state to the full authority to sell, lease, or hold all of his assets. That's where the fight starts. In October, Robert Hockenbrought and Amber Shuey, Jvirblis’ nephew and niece, filed a legal challenge to the Jvirblis Trust. A woman who identified herself as Dave declined comment Tuesday at the Curtis Technology headquarters. Her attorneys did not immediately respond to a request for comment. Hockenbrought is also the one who alerted authorities to the illegally stored chemicals, according to federal search warrants. The warrant says the employee was then told not to worry about it and that he was no longer allowed to go those locations.
