SANTEE, Calif. (KGTV) -- A man has been taken into custody following a carjacking Friday afternoon in Santee, according to the San Diego County Sheriff's Department.The incident started on the 9800 block of Mission Gorge Road around 1 p.m. when the suspect reportedly threatened to kill a 77-year-old woman and her family before hitting her, removing her from the car, and driving away with her purse and cell phone.Sheriff's deputies and La Mesa Police later found the suspect, Chris DiSalvo, 30, sitting in the stolen car on the 4600 block of Palm Drive in La Mesa. When he saw law enforcement, the department says he took off, crashing into a tree and running into a nearby apartment complex.DiSalvo was later found hiding in a stairwell and was arrested, the department says.According to authorities, DiSalvo admitted to taking drugs. He was given a dose of Naloxone and taken to the hospital.Upon his release from the medical facility, the department says he will be booked on several felony charges, including carjacking. 1035

SEATTLE, Wash. -- Home to Pike Place Market, rainy days and views of the Puget Sound, Seattle is also one of the first places in the U.S. to initially face the coronavirus and the fallout that followed.“We were the first city that really had to grapple with this,” said Don Blakeney, vice president of advocacy and economic development with the Downtown Seattle Association, a nonprofit representing about 2,000 businesses and residences.When COVID-19 first appeared, they worried that years of investment in the downtown core could be in jeopardy.“You saw overnight downtown clear out of employees,” Blakeney said.That made for a tough spring there, but then summer got hot when protests sparked nationwide.While the vast majority of protests across the country this past summer were peaceful, when they got out of control, some businesses paid the price. Damages from civil unrest became yet another blow to their bottom line, on top of the pandemic.“Viruses don't cause that physical damage,” said Sean Kevelighan, CEO of the Insurance Information Institute.Recently, the institute compared financial losses from civil unrest this year to similar events in the past.The Institute found that, based on today’s dollars, the most expensive civil unrest event in the U.S. happened during the L.A. riots in 1992, costing .4 billion.The rest of the top five were:L.A. You know, bring your own blanket, maybe some coverings, but it's largely, we're kind of learning as we have these new things that we're responding to,” Blakeney said.They are lessons that may help in their resiliency and that of businesses in other cities on the road to recovery. 2733

Segway says it will end production of its namesake two-wheeled personal transporter, popular with tourists and police officers but perhaps better known for its high-profile crashes. The company, founded in 1999 by inventor Dean Kamen, will retire the Segway PT on July 15. The company said 21 employees will be laid off. SELMA, Ala. (AP) — Bruce Carver Boynton, a civil rights pioneer who inspired the “Freedom Rides," has died at the age of 83.Former Alabama state Sen. Hank Sanders confirmed Boynton's passing Tuesday.Boynton was arrested 60 years ago for entering the white part of a racially segregated bus station in Virginia.That action began a chain reaction of events that ultimately helped to bring about the abolition of Jim Crow laws in the South.Boynton contested his conviction, and his appeal resulted in a Supreme Court decision that prohibited bus station segregation and helped inspire the landmark “Freedom Rides” of 1961. 627

SAN ONOFRE (CNS) - Authorities Thursday were searching for a hit-and-run motorist who struck and killed a pedestrian on Interstate 5 in the far northern reaches of San Diego County.Dispatchers received a call shortly before 6:40 a.m. from a person who reported seeing a body off of southbound Interstate 5 just south of Cristianitos Road, California Highway Patrol Officer Kevin Smale said.Officers responded to the area and found a pedestrian lying near the highway, Smale said, adding that the victim was pronounced dead at the scene.No details about the victim or the vehicle involved were immediately available.Officers shut down the onramp from Cristianitos Road to southbound I-5 and the right two lanes of southbound I-5 north of Basilone Road to investigate the circumstances leading up to the crash.Anyone with information regarding the crash was asked to call the Oceanside CHP office at (760) 643-4300. 921
