BEIJING, April 30 (Xinhua) -- Jia Qinglin, Li Changchun and Zhou Yongkang, members of the Standing Committee of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee Political Bureau, visited a large-scale theme exhibition, "Tibet, the Past and the Present," on Wednesday.     During their separate visits, they were shown around the 160 material exhibits and more than 400 pictures. The exhibition is being held in two halls of the Nationalities Cultural Palace. The exhibition shows the backwardness of Old Tibet and the development and progress of New Tibet, as well as the inseparable, historic links between Tibet and the Chinese nation.     Tibet is in its best period in history and the exhibition shows the great changes in the Tibet Autonomous Region in the political, economic, social and cultural fields, said Jia, chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC). Zhou Yongkang, member of the Standing Committee of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee Political Bureau, visits a large-scale theme exhibition, "Tibet, the Past and the Present," on Wednesday.The senior Party officials all pledged to safeguard the achievements of New Tibet, the happy lives of Tibetans and prosperity, development, harmony and stability in Tibet.     Other senior Party and State officials visiting the exhibition on the same day included Hui Liangyu, Liu Yunshan, Ma Kai, Meng Jianzhu and Du Qinglin.     The exhibition is sponsored by the United Front Department of the CPC Central Committee, the State Council Information Office, the State Ethnic Affairs Commission and the regional government of Tibet. It will be open to the public between April 30 and July 25,free of charge.

GENEVA, July 19 (Xinhua) -- Related parties should enhance diplomatic efforts and show flexibility in order to find a negotiated solution to the Iranian nuclear issue, a senior Chinese diplomat said here on Saturday.     "Currently there is a rare opportunity for promoting the resumption of negotiations on the Iranian nuclear issue," said Chinese Assistant Foreign Minister Liu Jieyi, who represented China at a meeting here with Iran's top nuclear negotiator Saeed Jalili.     "Enhanced diplomatic efforts and flexibility are needed for an early resumption of negotiations so that a long-term, comprehensive and appropriate solution could be found for the nuclear issue," he said.     Saturday's meeting was led by EU foreign policy chief Javier Solana and attended by senior diplomats from the United States, Russia, China, Britain, France and Germany.     The United States was represented by Undersecretary of State William Burns at the meeting. His participation was seen as a shift of long-standing U.S. policy toward Iran, as Washington had always insisted that it would not talk with Tehran unless it halts its uranium enrichment activities.     "It's highly significant that for the first time the political directors of all six countries with Solana were talking with our Iranian colleagues," Liu told reporters.     "It was the shared hope of all parties participating in the meeting that we find a negotiated solution to the nuclear issue," he said.     Both Solana and Jalili said Saturday's meeting was positive and constructive and promoted understanding of each other's positions.     They also agreed to talk again by phone or in person in about two weeks.     At the meeting, Iran failed to give a clear answer to a package of incentives presented by the six countries last month over the resumption of nuclear negotiations.     "We hope very much we get the answer and we hope it will be done in a couple of weeks," Solana told a press conference following the meeting.     The package of incentives suggests that Iran get a temporary reprieve from economic and financial sanctions in exchange for freezing its enrichment activities. Preliminary negotiations over a permanent halt could then begin.     "The package is supported by all six powers ... we think if negotiations could be resumed on this basis and finally a negotiated solution could be found, it will be a very good way out," Liu said.

BEIJING, Aug. 12 (Xinhua) -- Prices of real estate in 70 major Chinese cities rose 7.0 percent in July on the same month of last year, 1.2 percentage points lower than the June level, according to the National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC) and the National Bureau of Statistics on Tuesday.     The NDRC, the country's top economic planning organ, said the growth rate had slowed down for six consecutive months.     The price rise was 11.3 percent in January, 10.9 percent in February, 10.7 percent in March, 10.1 percent in April, 9.2 percent in May and 8.2 in June. BEIJING, Sept. 12 (Xinhua) -- The government has cut back on import taxes on spare parts of large equipment and canceled the import tariff exemption on some complete sets.     The adjustments were made to support the domestic manufacturing of large equipment, said the Ministry of Finance.     Taxes levied on domestic enterprises for importing key spare parts of large equipment, including ultra- and extra-high voltage transmission equipment and transformers, large petro-chemical equipment and large coal-chemical equipment, would be refunded and injected into the enterprises as investment from the nation, it said.     The policy applied to imports after Jan. 1, 2008, depending on the date of declaration of imports.     In the meantime, the import of some complete sets of equipment by enterprises approved after Sept. 1, 2008 would no longer enjoy the tax exemption. Both domestic and foreign-funded projects are subject to the new policy, the ministry said.     Imports of such equipment by enterprises approved before Sept. 1 would continue to enjoy the previous tax policies until March 1,2009.
