LOS ANGELES (CNS) - As COVID-19 cases surge, Covered California is urging uninsured residents to sign up for coverage by this Wednesday's deadline."Covered California is a critical safety net to help people get quality health care coverage during the surging pandemic and ongoing recession," said Covered California Executive Director Peter Lee. "With our first enrollment deadline coming up this week, we want to encourage anyone who needs coverage to check out their options and sign up so they can start the New Year with protection and peace of mind."Californians who want their coverage to start on Jan. 1 must sign up by Dec. 30, a deadline that was extended in response to the pandemic. However, the open enrollment period runs through Jan. 31. In either case, consumers will need to pay their first bill when enrolling.More than 1.2 million California residents are uninsured despite being eligible for financial help from Covered California or low-cost or no-cost coverage through Medi-Cal, according to Covered California."Most of the people who are uninsured either do not know they are eligible for financial assistance, or they have not checked recently to see how affordable quality coverage can be," Lee said. "No one should wait to sign up, and we are extending the deadline through Dec. 30 to give all of us more time to spread the word and make sure our family and friends have health insurance during this pandemic."Roughly nine out of 10 consumers who enroll through the Covered California marketplace receive either federal tax credits, state subsidies or both, helping to make health care more affordable. LOS ANGELES (AP) — Authorities say Hall of Fame quarterback Joe Montana and his wife confronted a home intruder who attempted to kidnap their grandchild over the weekend in California.According to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, Montana told deputies that his 9-month-old grandchild was sleeping in a playpen Saturday when an unknown woman entered their home in Malibu and grabbed the child.Montana and his wife, Jennifer, confronted the woman and asked her to give back their grandchild.After a tussle, law enforcement officials say Jennifer Montana pried the baby out of the woman's arms.The sheriff’s office says the woman, whom authorities identified as Sodsai Dalzell, fled the home but was later arrested. LOS ANGELES (CNS) - Los Angeles County health officials have reported more 4,544 new COVID-19 cases and 24 more deaths Friday, as new safety orders -- including a stay-at-home order -- will go into effect as a result.The new measures will go into effect on Monday and remain until December 20, according to Los Angeles County Public Health. Residents are advised to stay home as much as possible and always wear a face covering over their nose and mouth when outside their household and around others.The additional safety modifications in the order include the following changes to the existing Health Officer Order:-- Gatherings: all public and private gatherings with individuals not in your household are prohibited, except for church services and protests, which are constitutionally protected rights.-- Occupancy limits at various businesses; all individuals at these sites are required to wear face coverings and keep at least 6 feet of distance:-- Essential retail: 35% maximum occupancy;-- Nonessential retail (includes indoor malls): 20% maximum occupancy;-- Personal care services: 20% maximum occupancy;-- Libraries: 20% maximum occupancy;-- Fitness centers operating outdoors: 50% maximum occupancy;-- Museums galleries, zoos, aquariums, botanical gardens operating outdoors: 50% maximum occupancy;-- Mini-golf, batting cages, go-kart racing operating outdoors: 50% maximum occupancy;-- Outdoor recreation activities all which require face coverings (except for swimming) and distancing: Beaches, trails and parks remain open; gatherings at these sites with members outside your household are prohibited. "This is the estimate of people that are out and about and infecting others. They may not know they're infected. They may know they're infected and not be isolating. But they're out there and they're exposing other people to the virus."Ghaly said the number of people hospitalized due to the virus has jumped by 70% in the past two weeks, with the county now averaging about 300 new admissions daily."Based on the current estimate for (the virus transmission rate) and assuming that there's no change in people's behavior that would affect transmissions, there will likely be shortages in the number of hospital beds, and especially in ICU beds or intensive-care unit beds, over the next two to four weeks," she said.Ghaly noted that given the current transmission rate, the number of hospitalized patients could double in two weeks, and quadruple in a month. Alcohol, cannabis or legal or illegal drugs can all affect your driving,'' CHP Commissioner Warren Stanley said. ``Impaired driving is a serious crime that can lead to an arrest, serious injury or death.''RELATED: California's repeat DUI offenders to use ignition interlocks in 2019The CHP promised to focus on impaired drivers but also watch for distracted driving, speeding and seat belt violations.
