YICHANG, Oct. 30 (Xinhua) -- China's Three Gorges Dam on Sunday reached its designed highest mark, the second time for the world's largest water control and hydropower project to run at full capacity.The water level hit 175 meters at 5 p.m. after storing water for nearly two months from the water level of 152 meters, said an official with the China Three Gorges Project Corporation (CTGPC), the developer of the project.A dozen hydropower turbo-generator units started operation on Sunday, generating power capacity of 8.2 million kw, said the official.The dam in central China's Hubei Province completed its first full-capacity test last October.Operating at full capacity should give full play to the dam's functions of generating hydroelectric power, delivering water to the lower reaches to alleviate spring droughts, and containing water from summer flooding, as required by the State Flood Control and Drought Relief Headquarters.The Three Gorges Project was launched in 1993 with a budget equivalent to 22.5 billion U.S. dollars.So far, monitoring shows the dam is operating smoothly.

HELSINKI, Nov.23 (Xinhua) -- Nokia Siemens Networks is planning to cut its workforce by 17,000 worldwide by the end of 2013, the company said in a statement on Wednesday in Espoo, Finland.The company said the measures are part of an extensive global restructuring program, in which it will focus on mobile broadband and services."We need to take the necessary steps to maintain long term competitiveness and improve profitability in a challenging telecommunications market," said the company's Chief Executive Rajeev Suri in the statement.Rajeev Suri called the job cuts regrettable but necessary, and said the company would provide support for individuals and communities affected by the cuts, but defended the decision on economic grounds.Nokia Siemens is aiming to cut operating expenditures by around a billion euros over two years.Some 74,000 people currently work for the Espoo-based company in 150 countries, around 7,000 in Finland. HANOI, Oct. 25 (Xinhua) -- The hand-foot-mouth disease (HFMD) and dengue were on the rise across Vietnam, reported the Vietnam Preventive Medicine Administration (PMA) on Tuesday.As of Oct. 23, the country had more than 76,120 HFMD patients and 135 fatalities. The number of incidents has increased significantly over the last few weeks, with an average of 2,000-2, 500 new cases reported each week.Southern Ho Chi Minh City and Binh Duong, Long An and Quang Ngai were the most-hit localities, said the report.Meanwhile, dengue was also reported on the rise. In the first ten months of the year, there were more than 41,200 infected cases and 32 fatalities. Currently, an average of 2-3 cases a day were hospitalized by dengue infections, mainly from capital Hanoi.Epidemiologists said that the increase of HFMD and dengue was due to the lack of specialized medicine and preventive vaccines. In addition, complicated climate change, environment pollution and low awareness of the disease among the community have contributed to the spread of the diseases nationwide.

BEIJING, Sept. 30 (Xinhuanet) -- Miners, construction workers and people in hotel and food service industry are most likely to smoke in the U.S., according to new research finding.The finding was contained in a report released Thursday by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).According to the finding, miners and people in hotel and food service have a cigarette smoking rate of 30 percent, followed closely by construction workers' 29.7 percent.Both rates are much higher than the average smoking rate of 19.6 percent among all U.S. working adults.Workers in the education services industry have the lowest smoking rate, with 9.7 percent, followed by the 10.9 percent of workers in company management, the report said.Low education levels are a factor in high smoking rates, along with poverty and gender, said Ann Malarcher, senior scientific adviser at the CDC."Although some progress has been made in reducing smoking prevalence among working adults," the report wrote, "additional effective employer interventions need to be implemented."Smoking kills an estimated 443,000 each year in the U.S., costing about 193 billion U.S. dollars annually in direct health care expenses and productivity loss.
