SAN DIEGO (KGTV)- Nearly 200 volunteers are working in Logan Heights fixing up homes for families. One of those volunteers is Alexandra Pasquale. She believes this isn't just about grabbing tools and doing work, this is about families in the community.She's glad she can help them, "create their own wonderful memories, providing an environment they can have family meals in." Pasquale is part of Realty Income. The real estate company has teamed up with Habitat for Humanity. They will build 11 homes.As teams they're building fences, painting, and installing plywood. Just as law enforcement and educators are speaking out about the tragedy, so is the medical community."There's no more of a horrible feeling than to tell a family member that their child is now deceased and no longer can play," Jeffery Upperman, MD, said. Vanderbilt Children's Hospital's Surgeon-In-Chief, Dr. Upperman said Thursday morning's incident hit home. He is a long-time resident of Los Angeles County, who just recently transferred to Tennessee. "Hearing about the tragedy, I could've been one of those trauma doctors in the bay."He is in San Diego this week with more than 500 medical professionals at the Pediatric Trauma Society Conference, to learn about the latest medical treatments that focus on the care of injured children. Dr. Peter Masiakos is the Pediatric Trauma Director at Massachusetts General Hospital. He is speaking about the effects of gun violence. "We all know that it's far better to act on the side of prevention, instead of acting to fix the wounds," Dr. Masiakos said. He said too many kids come into the E.R. with gunshot wounds - via homicide, accident, or suicide. He said new federal policies need to be enacted to protect them, just like seat-belt legislation and the fight against tobacco."We have to engage the community like in the same way that Dr. C. Everett Koop did almost 40 years ago when he identified the issue of smoking and mitigated that," Dr. Masiakos said. They said school shootings are no longer just a gun issue, a school issue, or a law enforcement issue. SAN DIEGO, Calif. (KGTV) - Skies across the country filled with messages of change this Fourth of July weekend, including in San Diego. In Plain Sight is a national movement by about 80 artists with a goal of abolishing Immigration Detention Centers. Artists designed messages, then air crews drew those words in the sky.In San Diego, Pedro Rios, the American Friends Service Committee Director, said doing it on the holiday weekend was intentional.“As we’re contemplating the meeting of this weekend and this holiday, we should take into consideration what independence really means when there are tens of thousands of people that are detained right now,” said Rios.Locally, five locations were chosen over spots that have immigration facilities, from downtown down to the border. Individual artists were assigned to each location to create the specific messages.“We need to have conversations that question that and I think this artistic endeavor, In Plain Sight, is part of a larger dialogue of how we converse, of whether detention and incarceration is a best representation of who we are as people living in the United States,” said Rios, a Chula Vista native. 1173

SAN DIEGO (KGTV)  - A Marine was found dead Monday afternoon at the armory of Marine Corps Air Station Miramar, according to military officials.The Marine had suffered a gunshot wound. No foul play is suspected, according to the U.S. Marine Corps.Military officials did not announce whether the incident was a suicide or accidental firing.The Marine’s identity has not been released. He or she was assigned to the 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing.The MCAS Miramar Provost Marshal Office and MCAS Miramar Fire Department responded to the scene and are investigating the death. 580
