DENVER, Colorado — A new study from the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus highlights a startling aspect of the United States' opioid crisis: Many emergency room doctors don't realize just how often they're prescribing the addictive pain meds.CU researchers, along with researchers at the University of Massachusetts Medical School, conducted a year-long study examining the prescription-writing behavior of more than 100 doctors at four different hospital emergency departments.The researchers first surveyed the doctors, asking how often they prescribed opioids compared to their peers, and found that 65 percent of the doctors actually wrote more opioid prescriptions than they thought they did.Out of a total of 75,203 prescriptions written over the course of the year, 15,124 of them — or slightly more than 20 percent — were for opioids.After researchers showed the doctors the actual data, the doctors started writing fewer opioid prescriptions."Everyone showed an overall decrease in prescribing opioids," said study author Sean Michael, an assistant professor of emergency medicine at the University of Colorado School of Medicine. "After seeing their real data, the people with inaccurate self-perceptions, on average, had 2.1 fewer opioid prescriptions per 100 patients six months later and 2.2 percent fewer prescriptions per 100 patients at 12 months."The study only highlights a small piece of the opioid prescription problem, the authors state, since emergency room doctors hand out just 5 to 10 percent of all opioid prescriptions."Despite making progress on the opioid epidemic, we can't assume providers are behaving optimally and have all the information they need to do what we are asking of them," Michael said. The pandemic shut down all of the fair's large scale events, events that would help vendors pay the bills.So owner of the Kettle Corn stand Oliver Feldhausen reopened April 24th in the Green Lot for orders to soften the financial blow."He was so pumped and happy with all the response he got, he invited us to come and join him," Shahram Naimi, owner of Roxy's Restaurant said.Naimi and Owner of California Corn Dog Company Rick Kasinak opened May 8th.Each Friday and Saturday they're open from noon to 6p.m.They're serving dozens compared to the thousands each day at the fair, but they say it's better than nothing."You know it's kinda touch and go but these weekends are definitely helping," Feldhausen said. He said he's thankful for the fair supporting them during this time and the power of social media."Every week we are seeing some of our regulars trickle in and as word continues to spread we're seeing more and more," he said.They're also spreading kindness. Each vendor is offering a discount to military personnel and first responders.Some customers are donating food to first responders and healthcare workers.Feldhausen said they've made deliveries to two fire houses, nurses and ER personnel. He said they were happy to deliver free of charge.Each owner has decades of experience at the fair."This would have been my 50th fair, " Kasinak said.Kasinak is third generation fair vendor. His grandfather opened his first stand in 1920 at the Minnesota State Fair. His father opened his first stand in 1969 at the Del Mar Fairgrounds.Naimi came to the U.S. from Iran when he was 17 and started working in the restaurant business at 18-years-old. He opened Roxy's Restaurant in Encinitas with his brother in 1978. DENVER – A natural gas explosion caused at least one building to partially collapse Tuesday in Denver, injuring nine people. Simon Crittle, a spokesperson for Denver Health Medical Center, said two people were transported to the hospital by ambulance after the explosion and collapse. One of the people suffered traumatic injuries in the explosion. The other person was stable Tuesday afternoon.Crittle said that several other people were being treated at the scene of the explosion and collapse and that first responders were looking for other possible victims.Denver Fire Captain Greg Pixley said the explosion was reported at 1:15 p.m. Tuesday and said several buildings were damaged in the area. One person who had been trapped was rescued by firefighters.Pixley said that crews were working to put out an active fire at the scene in addition to working to reduce the chance of other explosions in the area and further collapses. He said there were no reported deaths as of 2:10 p.m.An Xcel Energy spokeswoman on scene said all of the company equipment is intact up to the meters, meaning the explosion was likely caused by a customer. Xcel is working to turn off gas remotely. The spokeswoman said the company has a distribution site at Lipan Street and Santa Fe Drive and staff at that location said they felt the explosion.Eileen Andrews, who owns the nearby Baker Neighborhood Market, said she saw a man run from the wreckage of the explosion who had his clothes blown almost entirely off his body and that the man suffered burns."I mean everything was exposed -- he barely had a couple strings left of his pants. When he realized it was another home across the street, he said he walked over to the scene and saw a person rescued from the rubble."It was two people ... a lady. And then this guy picked her up and firemen carried her out of the house," Scott said.
