According to the National Catholic Educational Association, 50 percent more catholic schools closed around the country than in previous years, in large part to the pandemic.The NCEA says around 150 catholic schools have closed their doors for good since the start of 2020, whereas around 75 to 100 have closed each year over the course of the last decade.“Income has certainly been diminished, which not only affects the functions of our parishes but also of our Catholic schools,” said Bishop Gerald Kicanas.Kicanas is the head of the board of the NCEA and says the catholic church has seen funding diminish for years as religion’s role in society has lessened. He says the economic hardships endured by families since COVID-19 was the last straw for many parishes who have been fighting to stay afloat.“People’s own resources are more limited. Many people are out of work and this is a deep concern for the church,” said Kicanas. “In many ways, religion has been marginalized in our society, I think that’s true. On the other hand, I think a parent has a deep concern that their child grows up with strong values and an appreciation of what is morally right in living one’s life.”According to the NCEA, enrollment in Catholic schools peaked in the early 1960s at 5.2 million. For the 2019-2020 school year, national enrollment was down to 1.7 million.In some places, like Lebanon, Pennsylvania, that means institutions that have served students for more than a century have made the difficult decision to close for good. In April, Lebanon Catholic School announced it would close its doors for a final time after serving students for 161 years.In a statement, Lebanon Catholic School said, “The school had faced enrollment and financial challenges for years and its continued operation was no longer sustainable by the area parishes... Even after the valiant efforts of the school and parishes during the past year and several years previously, the current and anticipated future debt for the school’s operation would significantly jeopardize the other ministries of the parishes.”Kicanas says if Catholic schools want to survive adaptation and consolidation are necessary.“I think we have to continue to be as innovative as possible in our educational outreach and programs so we really are forming our young people to contribute in the future,” said Kicanas.The National Catholic Educational Association says some Catholic schools have started offering new curriculum, and multi-language courses as a way to increase enrollment. 2540

A mom in Port St. Lucie, Florida said she wants to know how her 9-year-old son wound up at the end of his bus route, miles away from home, without his bus driver noticing him fast asleep in the bus.“I understand children can fall asleep, but at the end of the route why didn’t she check?" Rebecca Council said. "Why did she drive miles and then he wakes up, he’s scared, he’s unsure of where he is. She’s alone with my child.”“I was just scared," Trevor Council said.Trevor got on the bus as normal Wednesday afternoon at Windmill Point Elementary, where he attends third grade."We put so much trust into the school system to take care of our children," Rebecca said.But then, Trevor fell asleep and missed his drop off at Newport Isles just after 3 p.m.Soon after, his mom got a frantic phone call from his stepmom saying Trevor hadn't come home from school."My heart immediately it felt like it dropped into my stomach," Rebecca said.Trevor's dad tried calling the school district and was told his bus had been running on time."The parents having to track down their child when we’re entrusting our school bus drivers with the safety of our children. We should not have to be the ones trying to track down the location of our children," Rebecca said.In the meantime, Trevor’s bus continued five miles away to the Mako soccer fields with Trevor fast asleep in a seat. He eventually woke up while the bus was parked there.“I stand up and say where was I and the bus driver was like, 'What?'" Trevor said. "She didn’t know I was still on the bus.”He said he wrote down his name for the bus driver and ended up being carted around another school’s route before being brought back to his own bus stop, just before 5 p.m.“No one bothered to call the father, the mother, stepmother, no one,” Rebecca said.After about 45 minutes, Trevor’s dad eventually got an answer from transportation.“The guy just told them he’s fine, he fell asleep," Rebecca said.But that answer isn’t enough. Rebecca said she wants to know how this happened.“I want to understand how that’s possible that the bus driver didn’t at least double check and make sure that every child was off the bus," she said.“I just don’t want it to happen to anybody else," Trevor said.St. Lucie County School District didn't respond by the end of the day Thursday to requests for comment. 2368

After years of battling to stay near his family, a popular restaurant manager on Palm Beach is preparing to be deported to Mexico.Francisco Javier Gonzalez -- known by the community as Javier -- is saying farewell to the countless customers and friends he's made on the island, especially at Pizza Al Fresco — located about two miles from President Trump's property at Mar-a-Lago — where he has worked for nearly 10 years.In just a few weeks, he has been ordered to appear at a U.S. Immigration office in Miramar, where his attorney said he is likely to be taken into custody and deported.The 36-year-old moved to Palm Beach County from Mexico 20 years ago as a teenager to be near his brother, using what he thought was a valid visa.He says it wasn't until he returned to visit his parents in Mexico some years later that he learned the visa wasn't valid. After that, he said he returned to the country illegally to continue the life he established in South Florida, which has complicated his case with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement  (ICE) officials.Gonzalez has no criminal record. He's married to a U.S. citizen and has three young American-born children ages 6, 8 and 11.Over the years. Gonzalez says he's checked in regularly with immigration authorities as he works to become a citizen.However, with recent crackdowns on illegal immigration by federal authorities, Gonzalez says he knew his time was running short.When he checked in with ICE officers on March 17, he was told unless he left the country on his own, he would most likely be taken into custody at his next check-in.Now, Gonzalez is preparing for what may come next. The restaurant manager bid farewell to the community during a town hall meeting on Tuesday.Right now, Gonzalez's lawyer is in Washington, D.C. to meet with Senator Marco Rubio, Congress and customs officials to fight for his case.There's also a petition on Change.org, with nearly 40,000 signatures urging border patrol to stop the deportation.  2045

(CNS) - A 61-year-old Alpine man is the first person in San Diego County to test positive for West Nile virus this year, local health officials reported Wednesday.The man, whose name was withheld, was hospitalized and has recovered. The California Department of Public Health confirmed his WNV diagnosis on Tuesday.The man said he had traveled to Yuma, Arizona where it is believed he contracted the virus, according to the San Diego County Health and Human Services Agency.Since Jan. 1, there have been two West Nile virus positive detections in mosquitoes during routine trapping by the county vector control program, one in the Del Mar Area and the other in the Black Mountain Ranch area.There were only three human cases of West Nile virus in San Diego County in 2019 and two in 2018.The state has reported 11 people infected statewide so far in 2020, including a child in neighboring Orange County who was diagnosed sometime last week and was hospitalized but is expected to recover.West Nile virus is mainly a bird disease but can be transmitted to people by certain species of mosquitoes that first feed on an infected bird or animal and then a bite a person.Around 80% of people who become infected with West Nile virus never know it and never suffer any symptoms. About one in five people who are infected develop a fever and other symptoms such as headache, nausea, fatigue, skin rash or swollen glands. About 1 out of 150 infected people could become extremely ill and die.People older than 50 and who have underlying medical conditions are at heightened risk.Public health and environmental health officials recommend following the county's "prevent, protect, report" guidelines, which are designed to help residents protect themselves from mosquitoes that transit West Nile virus as well as invasive Aedes mosquitoes that can transmit tropical diseases, including Zika, dengue and chikungunya.Dump out or remove any item inside or outside homes that can hold water, such as plant saucers, rain gutters, buckets, garbage cans, toys, old tires and wheelbarrows. Mosquito fish, available for free by contacting the county's vector control program, may be used to control mosquito breeding in backyard water sources such as unused swimming pools, ponds, fountains and horse troughs.Wear long sleeves and pants or use repellent when outdoors. Use insect repellent that contains DEET, picaridin, oil of lemon eucalyptus or IR3535.
