SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Lifeguards say two people were rescued from a trail in the Blacks Beach area on Sunday in separate incidents.The first involved a woman who injured her ankle, according to San Diego Fire-Rescue. The woman was about half-way down before being injured. Lifeguards put her on a stretcher and used ropes to lower her down to the beach. She was taken by lifeguards to meet paramedics.The second occurred on the same trail, involving a woman suffering from heat exhaustion. She was unable to make it down the rest of the trail, requiring lifeguards to hoist her to the beach below to get her to paramedics.Lifeguards said with Labor Day weekend approaching and a heatwave expected next weekend, they are reminding visitors to local trails to know their limits, wear proper footwear for uneven beach terrain, and make sure they have plenty of water.Beach lifeguards say they don't expect to see crowds slow down anytime soon. 945

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Monday activist groups rallied at events throughout the day with the same message, more needs to be done to stop police brutality."My son was not killed he was murdered," Richard Abuka's son, Alfred Olango, was shot and killed by police in El Cajon back in 2016.Monday morning he stood on the steps of the Hall of Justice with other activists dredging up tragedy, compelling people to hear their message that new policies to hold police accountable need to be put in place. They held a banner with the names of those lost at the hands of law enforcement throughout the county."I've been pulled over numerous times, ripped out of my car, my car searched just because I'm driving with tattoos," a former convict by the nickname "Flaco" said at the Teach-In event held at San Diego City College.The events all supporting the National Day of Actions to Stop Police Brutality."We don't need cops," panelists spoke on ways to find a solution."I do work with the police and the DAs department in training their officers, and I help run a restorative justice program that's city wide and I'm expanding it to county wide," Aeiramique Blake said. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Maintenance crews were hard at work at UC San Diego Tuesday fortifying campus buildings ahead of the rainstorms expected this week, all while several dorms continued to dry out from the last one.Workers shored up roofs and deployed straw wattles and 200 sandbags near the Marshall Lower Apartments. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Loved ones are mourning the loss of a City Heights man and longtime professional wrestler to COVID-19.In the wrestling ring, Martin Rodriguez was known as "Espantito," or "The Terror." He donned a mask and black-and-white tights and had a knack for performing seamless moves.In early September, the man known for his strength felt tired and then developed a cough and fever. A few weeks later, he was having trouble breathing and was taken to the ER."He went in with pneumonia and was then diagnosed with COVID-19," said his daughter Barbara Rodriguez.Barbara says a few days later, he was placed on a ventilator. About three weeks later, Martin, a husband and father of two, died at the age of 53."He gave me strength, gave me guidance, and helped me become the person I am today. Knowing I won't have him for the future is painful," said Barbara.The man she knew as her loving, caring father stood in contrast to the character inside the ring. After several years in Mexico's famed AAA Lucha Libre in the early 90s, Rodriguez moved to San Diego and became a freelancer, wrestling in leagues in Southern California, Canada, and Mexico. He was always the bad guy and he loved it."Hyped him up even more. He loved entertaining people, making them laugh and feeling emotion," said Barbara.Since the pandemic began, his matches had been canceled. He owns a landscaping business and was taking all the COVID-19 precautions. Barbara doesn't know how he contracted the virus."I just want people to be safe. Wear a mask. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Large churches throughout San Diego are scaling down services in an effort to control the spread of the novel coronavirus. Miles McPherson, Senior Pastor of The Rock Church, says they normally get 12 to 13 thousand people who attend services at their seven campuses. Now, attendees who show up for worship won’t be allowed inside. A message sent out to members let them know about the change. RELATED: What's the difference? However, we are still going to have church and it’s going to be awesome,” McPherson said. “Here’s what’s going to happen. On Sunday at our normal times – 8, 10, 12, and 6, we will be broadcasting all of our services online on all of our platforms,” he added. McPherson also said church staff are taking precautions for those inside by sanitizing surfaces and not shaking hands. The Rock Church isn’t the only religious organization making changes amid COVID-19.
