(KGTV) - Some unexpected joy is arriving in the mail for residents of local senior care facilities, amid the ongoing restrictions on visitors.When the coronavirus pandemic forced visitor restrictions on nursing homes, Terri Martinson was conflicted. Her father is a resident at Parkview at Paradise Village in National City. She was happy the health of her father - Clyde Hasemeyer - was being protected, but she knows her dad."My dad is very social. He loves getting visitors, and telling jokes, playing games, singing and laughing. I was really concerned he wouldn't have any visitors," said Martinson.She and her family call often and write letters, but a few days ago, Clyde got a letter from someone he doesn't know. Clyde, a Koren War Marine Veteran, received a letter from 14-year-old Christian Hughes.10news caught up with Christian and his mother Mariana a few days ago as they began a letter-writing campaign for local senior care facilities. Their idea caught fire on social media. Hundreds of letters and cards have started to arrive at nursing homes, ending up in the hands and hearts of people like Clyde."My dad was so happy. He laughed and enjoyed it so much. He asked the caregiver to tape them up on his wall, so he could look at them all the time. Just makes him feel so nice not to be so isolated away from everyone," said Martinson.It's a feeling of not being alone during a time of staying apart. NATIONAL CITY (CNS) -  A pedestrian was struck by multiple vehicles and killed while attempting to cross an Interstate 5 off-ramp in National City, authorities said Friday.The crash happened shortly before 8:25 p.m. Thursday on the Civic Center Drive off-ramp from southbound Interstate 5, California Highway Patrol Officer Jake Sanchez said.A man was attempting to cross the off-ramp from an unknown direction when he walked directly into the path of a Toyota Rav4 driven by a 33-year-old woman, Sanchez said. The man was then struck by two other vehicles, he said.The unidentified man was pronounced dead at the scene, Sanchez said. 652

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. – More than 150 officers with the Minneapolis Police Department have started the process of filing physical and mental disability claims, with a majority saying they’re suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).The law firm representing many of the officers, Meuser, Yackley, and Rowland, made the announcement Friday, saying the events following the death of George Floyd have “pushed many officers to their breaking point.” Those events include the burning of the department’s third precinct.The law firm’s founder, Ron Meuser, Jr., wrote in a statement that many of the officers he represents were at the third precinct the day and night it was abandoned during the protests over Floyd’s death.“Officers were taking such extreme steps as writing final notes and texts to loved ones – fearful they wouldn’t make it home, and some saying they felt they needed to reserve their last bullet rather than being beaten to death,” wrote Meuser.The attorney says he’s seeing PTSD symptoms of officers with highly diminished capacity to live and socialize, extraordinary rates of divorce, and alcohol dependency to cope with their trauma.“It is an emotional crisis that cannot and should not continue,” wrote Meuser.The law firm says the number of officers claiming to have suffered PTSD over the past six weeks accounts for about 18% of the department’s 850-person force.“The men and women in public safety who give their heart and soul to serve Minneapolis and keep it safe deserve to have Minneapolis leaders to step up and supporting them,” wrote Meuser. “Instead of spending time plotting the dismantling of the force, let’s come together to improve community trust and work towards a safer city for all.”The city’s police department is facing intense scrutiny after now-former officer Derek Chauvin knelt on George Floyd’s neck for several minutes until the man lost consciousness and later died.Chauvin and three other officers involved have been fired and persistent protests across the country led prosecutors to swiftly charge them. MINERAL WELLS, Texas – A young bull rider has died after being bucked off a bull during a competition in Texas.Rowdy Lee Swanson of Duncan, Oklahoma, passed away Thursday due to injuries sustained while competing at the Palo Pinto County Livestock Association’s PRCA Rodeo in Mineral Wells, according to the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association.“We are deeply saddened by the passing of Rowdy Swanson at the ProRodeo in Mineral Wells, Texas,” PRCA CEO George Taylor said. “The hearts of the entire rodeo community go out to Rowdy’s family in this tragic time. We will continue to keep Rowdy and his family in our thoughts and prayers.”The 20-year-old was a student at Oklahoma State University in Stillwater and was studying animal sciences.Swanson was part of the university’s rodeo team.
