You don’t know when you’ll see them again,” Gragg said.He was hospitalized for six days.Gragg said her family got humidifiers and also downloaded apps to check air quality. The apps reveal that West Coast cities are suffering from some of the worst air in the world, with San Francisco, Portland and Seattle ranking in the top five.“We can see the atmosphere in totally new ways now, and I have never personally seen so much smoke across the west as I did last week,” said Geoff Cornish, a meteorologist with AccuWeather.Satellite images show choking smoke blanketing the west and moving across the U.S. and Pacific Ocean.“Most of the smoke, as it gets carried east of northern plains, is elevated, and that will be high in the atmosphere,” said Cornish. “Now, somebody who might be really susceptible to respiratory illnesses might sense some of that.”What makes wildfire smoke so toxic is fine particulate matter so small it can get deep into the lungs and bloodstream. It's a public health threat that grows with each destructive wildfire season.“Climate change is not something that should be debatable anymore,” Gragg said. “We can see it. BERKELEY, Calif. (AP) — A man suspected of tying a noose to a tree branch in Berkeley’s marina has been arrested and charged with a misdemeanor hate crime. Police said a person who works at the marina saw the man, later identified as Jaime Robledo-Espino tie a noose with some rope on Thursday. When confronted about the noose, the employee said Robledo-Espino fastened it to a tree branch and fled the area. The worker took a picture of the suspect and provided it to officers who later arrested him. He is being held in Alameda County jail on a misdemeanor terrorizing charge, which is considered a hate crime. 620

For students with special needs, it can be especially challenging. Learning new life skills is about overcoming those challenges.From inside her home, special education teacher Rebecca Josefek begins her classes with meditation each morning.“We try to find one that would energize us and get us started for the day. But it's important for them to center to focus,” said Josefek.For the last six summers, the special education teacher at Proviso East High School has worked on an extended year program for high school students with special needs.“We prepare these kids for a productive life after high school,” said Josefek.Normally, the summer class is hands on, focused on life-skill building like cooking and gardening.Josefek says in-person instruction is critical to these students' development.But this year, like so many things, it’s almost completely online. For the nearly 7 million students with special needs, it can be especially harrowing.“It's scary and it's hard with the kids, because we've lost some kids, like they don't want to be on or they're on and they just don't want to be present, like they're just in the background,” said Josefek.Kamron Bell, a 15-year-old sophomore at Proviso West High School, has Down syndrome. Though this year the summer program has required adjustment, he’s taken the virtual learning in stride.“I like it,” he said with a smile.For Kamron’s mother, Alison Bell, not having the in-person instruction means she has to take on a more active role.“Kam had an aide who had a one-on-one aid when he was in school, so I took the place of the aid. I think it just kind of sitting next to him and making sure that he stayed on task and that they could understand him,” said the mother.No one knows what the long-term impact of distance learning will be on these students. Josefek says it’s been a tough journey already.“It's a challenge and I think they're missing a lot. So, they like their social interaction with each other and with us as teachers,” she said.Educators say there will likely be significant regression – a phenomenon known as the “summer slide.” And the longer students are away from traditional classrooms – the more pronounced that regression could become.It’s one reason Josefek hopes remote learning will be long gone by next summer.“I hope but we will continue this summer program whether we're online or we are in person because it's definitely a needed program for these students.” 2620

(KGTV) — The San Luis Rey Downs Country Club and Golf Course shut down after being a popular spot for many in the community for over 50 years.After four years of being a vacant property, a new project is underway to revamp the area. The Myrtle Creek Botanical Garden and Nursery has purchased the buildings that used to house the restaurant and banquet rooms. They’ll be revamping the inside and adding updates.The marketing director for Myrtle Creek, Kevin MacGregor tells 10News, “It’ll be basically what it was for the past 50 years, but with our spin on it minus the golf course of course”.RELATED: Evacuated horses begin to return home to San Luis Rey Downs after Lilac FireThe County of San Diego Department of Parks and Recreation tells 10News they purchased 200 acres from the golf course when it first shut down. They have plans to protect the natural habitats in the area with possibly adding some hiking trails. No revamped golf course is in any plans.Neighbors in the area are looking forward to the day the lot won’t be vacant and instead will bring them restaurants and bars right to their neighborhood.They tell 10News, over the past four years there’s been a problem with added trash and vandalism on the property. Myrtle Creek has plans to turn it into a 23-room boutique hotel.Christine Hoffman has lived in the neighborhood for 25 years, she even played on the golf course when it was open.Hoffman tells us the past four years have been sad for the neighbors nearby."To see it go in such disrepair the last few years is kind of heartbreaking," Hoffman said.Hoffman, like many other neighbors, are looking forward to the project. Because it’ll stay the same size and bring similar traffic as the golf course, no one is doubting the benefits of the project. 2013
