CHICAGO -- Right now, nine COVID-19 vaccines are in or near a large-scale human trial phase. But enrollment of minorities in the trials remains a challenge. And a lot of people had very bad outcomes because of this,” said Dr. Emily Landon, an infectious disease specialist at University of Chicago Medicine.A recent Pew study found that Black Americans are still more skeptical of experimental treatments and a potential COVID-19 vaccine than Hispanic and white adults.Add to that, most of the current trials are recruiting mainly online, something experts say often results in mostly white people enrolling.“We will know more and be able to do a better job in caring for our friends and patients of color if we have more participation in these trials,” said Landon.Moderna had to delay trials because of a lack of diversity. As of earlier this week, 13% of Moderna’s enrollment volunteers were Black and 51% white. At the same time, only 8% of Pfizers volunteers are Black and 75% white.“They are going to have a significant shortfall of data when it comes down to African Americans and other groups, especially Latinos, and simply because they have not made the efforts,” said Evans.In the end, the vaccine must be at least 50% effective to receive FDA approval. CAMPO, Calif. (KGTV) - U.S. Border Patrol agents stopped a “brazen” smuggling attempt Wednesday at the U.S.-Mexico fence in East San Diego County, officials said. Agents near Campo reported the incident Wednesday at 3:45 p.m. when a Dodge 4500 utility truck crossed into the U.S. Fifteen minutes later, agents saw a man who had a truck matching the suspect vehicle, using bolt cutters trying to cut the lock of a South Bay resident’s private gate. Agents tried to stop the man, but he drove off. RELATED: Border Patrol arrests teen with toy car at U.S.-Mexico borderFollowing a short pursuit, the truck stopped and everyone inside ran away, Border Patrol officials said. “A vehicle drive-thru, with overloaded and unsecured passengers, particularly in this terrain, can certainly result in a rollover accident with serious injuries and death,” said San Diego Sector Interim Chief Douglas Harrison. “The breach of this old landing mat wall is illustrative of the need for more hardened infrastructure with greater impedance and denial capabilities to keep the area secure. I’m proud of our agents’ steadfast vigilance that put a stop to this smuggling attempt.” Agents captured 16 people who admitted to entering the country illegally. With less than 70 days to go until the election, undecided voters are poised to play a deciding role in whether President Donald Trump or Joe Biden is the president of the United States come the end of January. GEOGRAPHY MATTERSWhile undecided voters matter everywhere, they really matter in crucial counties in swing states. Luzerne County, Pennsylvania, is one example. In 2008 and 2012, this county, which encompasses towns like Wilkes-Barre, voted for President Barack Obama. In 2016, the county voted for Trump. Luzerne is one of three counties in Pennsylvania to have flipped like that. Political scientists refer to counties like these as "pivot counties." California is still counting ballots more than three weeks after Election Day.The slow counting process has been underscored by a series of House races in California carrying on for days past November 6. Now, the only remaining uncalled US House race is in California's 21st Congressional District.There, Republican Rep. David Valadao trails Democratic challenger TJ Cox by 506 votes -- or about half a percentage point -- with votes still being counted. If Cox holds on to win, it would give Democrats a net pickup of 40 House seats this year.So why is the process so slow?California officials say the effort is built with a series of safeguards, many of which don't exist in other states. The bottom line: California's vote-counting process is built to take a long time."The philosophy here is, while it may take a little bit longer to finish counting ballots in California, the policies are in place to ensure that all votes can be properly processed and added to the tally -- and I guess better said, that all voices can be heard in the political process," California Secretary of State Alex Padilla said in a phone interview Wednesday.The state's laws give its voters, about two-thirds of whom cast their ballots by mail, more time to send in their ballots. As long as they are postmarked by Election Day and arrive at county elections offices by Friday -- three days after the election -- they're counted.California also requires counties to give voters time to fix any issues with their ballots -- such as a missing signature -- and requires counties to contact those voters to inform them of any problems.When voters mail ballots to the wrong county, those counties are required to send them to the right one.The state allows same-day voter registration.
