SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The city of San Diego is making sure its homeless students have the right tools to succeed in school.One San Diego’s “We’ll have your back campaign” is distributing thousands of supplies to the San Diego School District’s less fortunate students.Officials estimate more than 6,000 students are homeless in the district.“A lot of these kids don’t get anything new and that’s why we make it is possible,” said Katherine Stuart-Faulconer, the wife of San Diego Mayor Kevin Falconer.One San Diego will have several more similar events and drives this year. 579

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Teachers, grocery workers and police officers are among those slated to receive the COVID-19 vaccine in the next phase, but there is still debate about how best to prioritize those industries during the rollout.After the vaccine reaches individuals in Phase 1A, frontline healthcare workers and people in nursing homes, a CDC advisory panel recommended Sunday that Phase 1B consist of people aged 75 and up and certain high-risk essential workers.About 30 million essential workers fall into this category. Ultimately, it will be up to states and local health departments to determine which of those essential workers get first access to the lifesaving vaccines.“I feel like we're on an organ transplant committee deciding who gets the liver and gets to survive. It's a tough decision,” said Dr. Christian Ramers, a member of San Diego County’s vaccine advisory group.There is particular focus on when to vaccinate teachers. Nevada’s preliminary plan is to put teachers and transit workers ahead of food and retail workers. On the other hand, Louisiana’s plan is to vaccinate prison guards and food processing workers before teachers.“I really hate that idea that we are pitted against other essential workers,” said California Teachers Association president Toby Boyd.There are health and economic considerations surrounding the timing of immunizations for teachers. On one hand, there’s broad agreement that in-person learning offers superior educational and emotional outcomes for children, along with significant child care benefits for families.“It’s going to help economically because it will allow parents to go back into the workforce without worrying about their child,” Boyd said.On the other hand, education can happen virtually while jobs like policing, firefighting and food processing cannot. There are also questions about the relative risk of transmission in a classroom compared to other work settings.“[In] a school environment, you can basically control the environment with your policies, with your air conditioning system, with mandatory masking,” said Dr. Ramers. He said other industries, such as food handling, present more risk.“We want to stick really to who has the highest risk of catching the disease because of the constant exposure, and then who has the highest risk of dying of the disease? SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The FDA Wednesday gave emergency approval to a San Diego company's test for COVID-19 antibodies.Easy Check, from Truvian Sciences, can test for COVID-19 antibodies in under 10 minutes."They've now given us the right to market the product and sell the product as a safe and effective solution for this type of testing," said Truvian President and CEO Jeff Hawkins.The test uses a drop of blood on a testing strip. Within 10 minutes, it shows a marking on the strip that indicates if you have the antibodies or not.Hawkins said these kinds of tests are vital to the future of the coronavirus pandemic."This type of testing, today, is helping us understand how many people had an infection," said Hawkins. "Over time, this type of testing may help us understand how long that vaccine is good for and how long you are protected.He added, "Using these very deployable, simple tests to monitor this is one way we can track people over time and see how this evolves."The Easy Check test went through independent testing by four separate laboratories. They found it is 99% accurate in detecting both the presence of the COVID-19 antibody and identifying it among other antibodies.Right now, the test requires a full blood draw, but Truvian is working on a version of the test that only needs a finger prick.Hawkins said his company will sell it to medical labs and offices for per test, keeping it affordable for patients who want to take the test, although individual tests may cost more to help doctors and labs cover their costs."Our core mission as a company before COVID was to make testing more accessible and make testing less expensive," said Hawkins. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The leader of a San Diego motorcycle gang pleaded guilty Tuesday to participating in a scheme to seal dozens of Jeep Wranglers in San Diego County. Jimmy Josue Martinez, a leader of the Hooligans motorcycle gang, pleaded guilty Tuesday, admitting to participating in the scheme. According to court records, the gang is responsible for the theft of more than 150 of the vehicles since 2014, totaling about .5 million. Records show that the Hooligans used high-tech methods to disable security systems and steal the Jeeps before taking them to Tijuana to be sold or stripped for parts. Martinez and members of his crew would obtain the vehicle identification number in advance before getting secret key codes which allowed them to create a duplicate key for a particular Jeep. “The joy ride is over for Mr. Martinez,” said U.S. Attorney Robert Brewer. “These thefts were audacious and sophisticated and created hassle and heartache for scores of Jeep owners. I congratulate prosecutors Andrew Galvin and Joseph S. Green, the FBI and members of the Regional Auto Theft Task Force for putting together a strong case against a gang that, unfortunately, has lived up to its name.”Along with Martinez, eight other members of the gang were charged in a grand jury indictment in 2017. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The family of the man killed on India Street on this month has identified him as David Hill. The 38-year-old was a pathology resident at Balboa Naval Hospital. In the Navy since 2004, Hill had reached the rank of Lieutenant Commander. He was an avid traveler, having visited dozens of countries. His mother, Carol Hill, said he had a goal of running a marathon on every continent. Hill had already checked off the hardest, Antarctica, though he had to get creative. “He did the 26 miles on the ship’s treadmill to fill that square!” said Hill's mother. He had made it a few blocks from his apartment when he was struck by the driver of a minivan on India Street near Olive and Palm. Paramedics pronounced him dead at the scene.
