SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- AMC is reopening an additional 140 theaters nationwide by Friday, including seven of its locations in San Diego County.The reopenings will mean 70 percent of the company's theaters, 420 total, will be open before Labor Day weekend.A vast majority of the theaters, the company said, will reopen on Thursday.On Friday, Sept. 4, these seven San Diego area theaters will be open to the public:AMC Chula Vista 10AMC Fashion Valley 18AMC La Jolla 12AMC Mission Valley 20AMC Otay Ranch 12AMC Plaza Bonita 14AMC DINE-IN Poway 10As part of the reopenings, AMC is "offering an array of food and beverage treats, including regular popcorn, regular Coca-Cola Freestyle drinks and KidsPacks, through the end of October. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A San Diego-based biotech company appears to be making huge strides with its experimental COVID-19 vaccine after testing it on monkeys.Inovio Pharmaceuticals is one of more than 100 companies working on a vaccine. It’s one of few to make it to human clinical trials.“We’re much closer to finding a safe and effective vaccine,” said Dr. Kate Broderick, the VP of Research and Development for Inovio. “We’re so excited and feel so confident about the results we’ve got both in animals and our human clinical trials.”Broderick said clinical trials had shown positive results regarding the safety of Inovio’s experimental vaccine.“Our phase one has been our U.S. based trial, and we’re about to start a trial in China,” she said. “We really are looking to test the vaccine all over the world. The immune responses that these people have generated after getting the vaccine, we’re so pleased with those because they’re really broad.”She said the latest positive development came from testing the vaccine on monkeys in what’s called an Animal Challenge Study.“Those monkeys received their vaccine, then just after four months later they received the virus itself, we were able to show they were protected from that,” she said. “What we were able to show in the lungs, and the nose is that those monkeys really were protected from the symptoms of COVID-19.”It will take some time to ensure all testing is done correctly, and the potential vaccine is safe before it is given to the general public.“Realistically we should be looking at a vaccine being available for certain members of the public at the end of 2021,” she said. “Most vaccines historically take 5 to 10 years to be generated and developed; this is really a short time frame.”Broderick, a busy working mom with two young kids at home, hopes the positive results will ease the minds of those anxiously waiting to get back to normal.“I do just want to let you know there is light at the end of the tunnel; there is hope out there,” she said. “Our vaccine is looking very promising there’s other vaccines out there that are looking very good.” 2123

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A tortoise no longer on the loose is still waiting for its rightful owner in East County.The tortoise, believed to be an older male, was found Thursday by Heartland Paramedics.It was roaming the streets of El Cajon and is now staying at the El Cajon Animal Shelter.Workers there say this is not a situation they often face.“Not in the City of El Cajon," said Shelter Manager Jill Jones. "Perhaps in outer-lying counties, they have a little more tortoise traffic, but we generally do not."A family who saw the original 10News story believed the tortoise was their beloved pet Frankie who went missing a week ago. However, upon arrival at the shelter, they quickly realized this tortoise was much larger.If you believe the tortoise is yours, you can go to the shelter during regular business hours.
