It’s a sight to behold. Three of the most influential men in the Confederacy--Jefferson Davis, Robert E. Lee and Stonewall Jackson-- are carved into granite that is 400 feet above the ground. It’s called Stone Mountain, and it’s the largest monument to the Confederacy in Georgia and in the world.“Under state law, this park is established as a confederate memorial,” said John Bankhead of the Stone Mountain Memorial Association.To community activist Shar Bates, she said this park has different meanings for different people. Talk to people in their 60s or 70s, they’ll say it was a place where the klan was ignited, and if you talk to people under 40, some people love to run up there, but for most of us, it’s a reminder of white supremacy,” said Bates. “It’s a reminder that white supremacy is still going strong in 2020."As smaller monuments of Confederate leaders are torn down across the country, many wonder: should Stone Mountain be next?“The mountain does have a dark history; we don’t deny that,” said Bankhead. “We wish we could turn back the clock and change it, but we can’t, so we have to face it as it is."That dark history fostered in the 1900s by the Venable family. They owned the mountain and signed off on the carving. They were known members of the Ku Klux Klan and granted the group an easement to gather on the mountain for years.“The Venables would allow the Klan to have rallies here,” said Bankhead. From initiations to burning crosses on the top of the mountain, this site was closely tied to the group until the state bought the park in 1958.Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. even mentioned the mountain in his iconic “I Have a Dream” address saying, “Let freedom ring from Stone Mountain Georgia.”“That’s how deeply rooted the racism spurring from the mountain is,” said Bates.The carving was started in the early 1900s, but the first man who carved, Gutzon Borglum, eventually left the project to carve Mount Rushmore.The second carver, Augustus Lukeman, began on the project in 1925 and removed what Borglum had created. The funds for the project ran out in 1928 with the Great Depression. The carving remained untouched for decades.The state bought the park in 1958 and revived the carving project in the height of the Civil Rights movement. The carving was finished in 1972.The sight of the figures hang heavily over Bates’ head. She said she hasn’t been to the mountain in years. “My spirit was unsettled the first time I set foot there,” she said.Tens of thousands of people have signed a Change.org petition to remove the figures from the mountain. Bates is working with local leaders through a task force to see that change realized.“To see people who fought to continue enslaving my people turned into a hero, it makes me feel like I shouldn’t be here. It makes me feel like this government wants us to go back in history,” she said.Bankhead said this conversation of changing the memorial is an ongoing discussion. He said the Stone Mountain Memorial Association agrees the memorial is problematic and not inclusive. He said the association is now figuring out how to make the narrative of this mountain more inclusive.“It’s not like a statue,” he said. “You can’t move it, so it would present a unique problem to remove it, environmentally and financially, so the park is trying to do a better job of telling a better story that’s all-inclusive,” he said. They have not released plans of what that would look like yet, but Bankhead said it is in the works.“The best thing for them to do would be to remove the Confederate generals and replace them with civil rights leaders,” said Bates. “We are in the birthplace of civil rights."The monument and the park are protected by state law, so for any changes to be made, the state would have to sign off. Bates and Bankhead said they are committed to re-writing the story of this mountain to have a more inclusive future.“We’re not saying this will be easy,” said Bates. “Georgia owes its residents the removal of this unless they’re saying we live in a racist state. If we don’t live in a racist state, then prove it.” 4193

In yet another aggressive attempt to bypass federal appeals courts, the Trump administration asked the Supreme Court on Friday to hear a challenge to President Donald Trump's policy that bars most transgender individuals from military service.The policy, first announced by the President in July 2017 via Twitter and later officially released by Secretary of Defense James Mattis, blocks individuals who suffer from a condition known as gender dysphoria from serving with limited exceptions. It also specifies that individuals without the condition can serve but only if they do so according to the sex they were assigned at birth.District courts across the country have so far blocked the policy from going into effect. The 9th Circuit Court of Appeals heard arguments in one challenge earlier this fall and the DC Circuit will hear arguments in early December.On Friday, Solicitor General Noel Francisco filed petitions asking the justices to take up the issue in three separate cases that are still in lower courts so it could be decided definitively this term. Francisco argues that lower court rulings imposing nationwide injunctions are wrong and warrant immediate review.He writes because of the injunctions, "the military has been forced to maintain that prior policy for nearly a year" despite a determination by Mattis and a panel of experts that the "prior policy, adopted by (Defense Secretary Ash Carter), posed too great a risk to military effectiveness and lethality."House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi vowed to "fight this discriminatory action" in a statement Saturday."The President's ban is a cruel and arbitrary decision designed to humiliate transgender Americans who have stepped forward to serve our country," she added. "This bigoted ban weakens our military readiness and our country, and shows this president's stunning lack of loyalty to those who risk all to defend our freedoms."Earlier in the month, the Department of Justice warned the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals that it planned to ask for emergency relief to lift the nationwide injunction.The filing comes after Chief Justice John Roberts and Trump got into a public dispute about the independence of the judiciary this week. Roberts issued a rare statement on Wednesday criticizing the President for calling one lower court judge who ruled against him an "Obama judge." A digital marketplace for working mothers aims to make sure that women remain in the workforce and stay supported.As a single mom of three, Chandra Sanders does it all. And all was fine until the pandemic. “Due to COVID-19, my most recent project that I accepted was in commercial and retail, and that industry was seriously impacted from COVID-19 and was the first to shut down. Due to that shutdown, my project was shut down along with my income,” Sanders said.She refused to be negative though. And while stressed and anxious about her income, she turned to the internet.“I found the Mom Project doing a regular Google search online,” Sanders recalls. When she found it, The Mom Project happened to be hiring for its own team. She landed a job and couldn't be happier. Chief Community Officer Colleen Curtis says The Mom Project has now served over 2,000 companies and connected thousands of moms with employment.“People are coming to the realization that this can’t be how it is for everyone, forever,” Curtis said.The Mom Project was born in 2016, by you guessed it, a mom. Who, while on maternity leave, read a statistic. It said that 43 percent of skilled women leave the workforce after becoming mothers. Founder Allison Robinson didn't want moms like her to choose between a career and a family. Four years later and the digital marketplace is seeing change.“We’ve seen an incredible response from both sides of what I would say the marketplace, as a mom, we knew that the pain point was there for moms and it was really that we were feeling the tensions between being a great mom and being great at work but what we’re seeing is the incredible demand from companies,” Curtis said.When we asked what challenges women face now, as they navigate through the pandemic, Curtis says The Mom Project is noticing some tough things. “It's been disproportionately difficult for moms, specifically moms of color, but also, just moms. The emotional labor of adapting to new situations: work from home, kids are now home, all the way from babies to college kids, and your village has been stripped away,” Curtis said.Chandra Sanders says part of her new role at The Mom Project is to help other moms. Specifically, to help moms of color find and achieve her same success.“I must say it's the first job that I’ve had that I’ve felt welcome as a mom, as a woman, I didn’t have to hide that and as woman of color I didn’t have to hide that either,” Sanders said.Sanders says her former roles in commercial and retail industry were challenging. "Being a Black woman in an industry where I’m the only Black woman you have to be very careful about what you say, how you dress, the tone of voice that you’re using and you have to be careful about everything that you do,” Sanders said.Now she's on a mission to both change the workforce and pave the way for others.“Many companies now have these initiatives, want to hire a diverse workforce they really want that- their human resource departments are in charge of reaching out to the mom project and to candidates to ensure their workforce is diverse.”And she says, she's been there. Laid off, struggling as a single mom. She wants others to know, focusing on the good and the positive will help propel you forward.“I can do it, and I did it and we’re going to make sure other people can do it too,” Sanders said. INDIANAPOLIS -- Firefighters at an Indianapolis fire station opened the door early Friday morning to a one-of-a-kind request for help: A frantic woman, distressed because her pet raccoon was stoned off of too much weed.The raccoon, according to Wayne Township Fire Dept. PIO Capt. Michael Pruitt, had been exposed to "too much" of someone else’s marijuana, and its owners were worried it was overdosing. Not knowing what to do, they brought it to Station 82.“The raccoon was very lethargic,” Pruitt said. “She started explaining what had happened.
