LONDON — The British government says it won’t be using 50 million face masks it bought during a scramble to secure protective equipment for medics at the height of the coronavirus outbreak because of safety concerns.The masks were part of a 252 million pound (2 million) contract the government signed with investment firm Ayanda Capital in April. LOS ANGELES (AP) -- Five people were shot at an illegal party attended by up to 200 people at a Los Angeles warehouse.The shooting was reported just after 12:30 a.m. Tuesday in a commercial area south of downtown LA.Police say people scattered after about 20 shots were fired. KABC-TV reported five shooting victims -- three males and two females -- were transported to hospitals and all are expected to survive. LOS ANGELES (AP) — An autopsy report says “Glee” actor Naya Rivera raised her arm and called for help as she accidentally drowned while boating with her 4-year-old son on a California lake. The report released Friday by the Ventura County Medical Examiner says the 33-year-old Rivera was a strong swimmer. It says she had suffered from vertigo and had a recent sinus infection but neither were factors in her death. Small amounts of prescription drugs found her systems also did not contribute to her death. Rivera's son was found alone on the boat on July 8. Her body was found five days later. 603

LOS ANGELES (CNS) - As the use of legal and illegal fireworks around the Los Angeles area exploded this Fourth of July, fire departments saw a sharp increase in the number of calls for service, authorities said Sunday.It was the second-busiest day ever in calls for service from the Los Angeles County Fire Department, according to Dispatch Supervisor Imy McBride.The dispatchers usually field 1,000 calls on an average day, McBride said. On July 4th, they handled more than 1,600 calls, including tree, brush and roof fires.Los Angeles City firefighters responded to 1,770 calls for service from 3 a.m. July 4 to 3 a.m. Sunday, spokesman Nicholas Prange said. The department averaged 1,368 calls per day during the same period in 2019, he said.The July 4 fires included one that burned trees and the roof of a garden-style apartment building on Wilbur Avenue in Northridge with five people suffering smoke inhalation and 50 residents being displaced, Prange said.There was also a three-acre brush fire in Shadow Hills and a fire that spread from palm trees to the roof of an apartment building in Reseda.McBride and Prange said it was unclear whether the fires were related to the increase use of fireworks. 1216
