CHULA VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) -- A beloved South Bay preschool director is being remembered as someone who always made others feel special.Aaron Partch was a co-director at Concordia Preschool in Chula Vista. He passed away September 15th.A virtual memorial for him was held Saturday.Like many other schools, Concordia closed in March during the pandemic. A couple months after the school closure, Partch was diagnosed with grade four glioblastoma. He had undergone brain surgery and was receiving treatment, including chemotherapy and radiation. In mid-September, Partch passed away suddenly from a heart attack.“God took our warrior up to heaven where he no doubt is singing and dancing with the angels,” his family wrote online.His co-workers said his energy will be missed.“He knows everybody by name. His greetings were always extremely cheerful, but sincere. When he asked you how your day was, he wanted to know,” said preschool teacher Meagan Lee, who worked with Partch for the last two years. “I think it’s really hard for all of us to walk down the halls and know he’s not going to be there with us.”Partch had been with Concordia Preschool for more than ten years. Nearby schools also remembered him.“If you knew him, you knew what a loss this is not just for Concordia, but for our community as well. Aaron was one of those people who lit up a room. He filled every moment with happiness and joy, and he was such a great leader to his students,” the Enrique Camarena PTA wrote on Facebook.Partch was 51 years old. CHULA VISTA (KGTV) -- The Chula Vista Elementary School District says families can now pick up both breakfast and lunch meals in one trip, the district announced Wednesday.CVESD is working with families to make the meal service more accessible and increase participation. Previously, the service was offered over to two different sessions for breakfast and lunch requiring families to make two trips.The hours are: 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. each day, the district said.Schools throughout the county are continuing to provide free meals to students in need amid the COVID-19 outbreak.CVESD is also extending the "grab-and-go" meal service at all nine school sites through spring break, March 23-27 and March 30 to April 3."Students who are receiving the meals must be physically present. Chuck Yeager, the famed World War II fighter pilot who was the first pilot to break the speed of sound, died on Monday at the age of 97, Yeager's wife Victoria Yeager said on his Twitter account.According to family, Yeager died shortly before 9 p.m. ET on Monday."An incredible life well lived, America’s greatest Pilot, & a legacy of strength, adventure, & patriotism will be remembered forever," Victoria Yeager tweeted.Yeager earned a number of awards for his service to America, including the Bronze Star Medal, Purple Heart, Air Force Distinguished Service Medal and Legion of Merit, among others. He received the Presidential Medal of Freedom from President Ronald Reagan in 1985. He was also named to the National Aviation Hall of Fame in 1973.He reached the rank of brigadier general during his 34-year military career.Yeager faced challenges along the way to his historic run as a test pilot. (KGTV) - The City of Chula Vista is launching a new pedestrian safety initiative after seeing a sharp increase in fatal crashes last year.According to the Chula Vista Police Department, nine pedestrians were killed in 2017 on city streets. That’s up 125% from 2016.In the first three months of 2018 there have already been three fatal pedestrian crashes, a 200% increase from the same period last year. Police say it's the first time in four years they’ve had more than one pedestrian killed within the first quarter of the year.The map below shows those killed in auto-pedestrian crashes between January of 2017 to March of 2018. In an effort to combat the trend and educate the public, the city unveiled a new campaign on Thursday called “Stay Safe Chula Vista.”To kick off the program they have named April as “Pedestrian Safety Awareness Month.” The Chula Vista Police Department along with the Fire Department and Department of Traffic Engineering will be working together on enforcement and education.CVPD will have increased patrols targeting both drivers and pedestrians who violate traffic laws. Along with the ticket, violators may also relieve pamphlets with information on the “Stay Safe Chula Vista” campaign. Of the nine fatal collisions in 2017, CVPD said pedestrians were found to be at fault in seven of them.The announcement came a little over a month after a 90-year-old man was killed while crossing the street.RELATED: 90-year-old dies hit, killed by two cars in Chula Vista Police say the man was crossing East H Street when he wasn’t supposed to when he was struck and killed.Similarly, in January of 2018, a 94-year-old man was hit and killed on the 1500 block of Third Avenue.
