SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – San Diego Mayor Kevin Faulconer announced Wednesday that the San Diego Padres will oversee the creation of an all-new, mixed-use district outside of Petco Park.Moving forward with plans to revitalize the neighborhood adjacent to the downtown ballpark, Faulconer announced the winning proposal to transform the space in the East Village known as Tailgate Park into the East Village Quarter -- a project consisting of retail, housing, open space, parking, and more, with the Padres as a partner.The area is bordered by 12th and Imperial avenues and K and 14th streets. The City of San Diego has owned the four blocks since the ballpark district was developed.Last December, the city formalized its intent to sell or lease the space, and on Wednesday, Faulconer said the Padres came up with the best proposal to revitalize the area.The city also held a virtual open house to get public input on the top two proposals and the community’s priorities for the development.Padres President Erik Gruepner said they want the space to embody the “live, work, play” vision of the East Village, so much of which is already influenced by the team’s presence.Gruepner spoke about holding neighborhood festivals and farmers markets to help create a feeling of community, turning a parking lot into a neighborhood.When it comes to parking, the Padres plan to add 600 more spaces than what currently exists in a multi-level structure.The cost for the project is expected to exceed billion.The proposal will go to the City Council for a review and vote, and if approved, the goal is to have a final plan in place by next year. 1637

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - San Diego Loyal SC announced Thursday they will be wearing a Black Lives Matter alternate kit for the team's first game and for other selected games through 2021.The uniform is all black with dark teal accent and the phrase “Together San Diego” will run down the side of the jersey. Player nameplates will spell out "Black Lives Matters" across the back standing in solidarity with the national-turned-global movement against racism and injustice towards people of color.The team's first game is Saturday in Utah.The organization's goal in aligning itself with the BLM movement is to promote inclusivity and diversity in the community, according to team President Warren Smith."Loyal is more than just our name -- it's our mantra," Smith said. "The Loyal in our name is symbolic of the diversity in our community, and now more than ever we stand by this. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — San Diego health officials are worried about a recent uptick in out-of-towners testing positive for coronavirus locally ahead of the holiday weekend.In San Diego, health officials have seen increases in positive COVID-19 cases diagnosed locally in people who live in nearby counties or states. Throughout the pandemic, there have been 16 Arizona residents have tested positive while in the region, seven of those were in the last week. So far, 330 Imperial County residents have tested positive while in San Diego and 61 of those were in the last week, as cases grow in that county.RELATED: San Diego County to close bars that don't serve food to slow COVID-19 spread"We have looked specifically at nearby county residents. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- San Diego County health officials Monday echoed Governor Gavin Newsom’s demand to close more businesses as coronavirus intensifies.The state announced Monday that it was closing indoor operations for places of worship, restaurants, wineries, movie theatres and family entertainment, zoos, museums, cardrooms, fitness centers, some offices, personal care services, hair salons and barbershops, and malls. All bars were also ordered to close."We are moving back into a modification mode of our stay-at-home order," Newsom said. The new order takes effect in San Diego at midnight Wednesday morning. The announcement comes as 419 more people throughout the county tested positive for coronavirus Monday. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Rocks or BB pellets have hit more than a dozen taxis as they traveled near the San Diego International Airport over the past week, cab drivers told 10News.The attacks along Harbor Drive have left cracks in their windshields and dents in the vehicles’ sides, cabbies said.“It's life threatening and we are just shocked what's going on,” said cabbie Ahmad Saddat-Nejad.Saddat-Nejad, who has been driving for almost 30 years, said he has never had anything like these attacks happen.“My car was not even in motion. Suddenly, I hear ‘boom’. Somebody threw a rock,” he said, reporting an incident on Harbor Drive at Laurel Street.“It happened to five cars yesterday again,” said Alex Tegegne of the San Diego Taxi Association.Tegegne said the attacks occur every night after dark, from North Harbor Drive down the Embarcadero.“We start to say do we need a helmet, or what should we do now? Should we avoid going on Harbor? What can we do,” Tegegne told 10News.In all, 17 cabs have been targeted.“It is totally very scary, and the customers don't feel comfortable about it,” said Tegegne.Cab drivers say they can’t afford to lose those customers. The success of Uber and Lyft have taken a toll on the taxi industry.“We don't know if this thing is taking business from us. We are already on life support to begin with, but this will be another threat to our customers and also ourselves," Tegegne said.The threat could be enough to put drivers out of work.“He could have killed me and I’m scared of driving now.
