SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Renters in San Diego are reacting with surprise, even anger, to a rental listing for what appears to be a backyard shed with an asking price of ,050 a month. The studio is located in the backyard of a home on Oregon Street in North Park, one of San Diego's most walkable neighborhoods. "I was amazed it was going for that much money," said Joe Moreno, who lives nearby. "Does it have plumbing? I mean, does it have facilities?"The answer is yes. It's also got a wall air conditioner, new laminate flooring and a kitchenette. RELATED: Study examines San Diego's 'affordability crisis'A worker at J.D. Property Management, which is renting the unit, said he expected to get asking price. After all, a prior tenant rented it for ,100 a month for two years. "Maybe it is high for what it is offered at, but the reality is that the square footage and the location is exactly what this market needs," said Alan Nevin, director of research at the Xpera group. The asking price is about 0 per month less than a typical North Park studio. Still, the listing alone is stirring emotions from renters. On Reddit, people called it ridiculous, and one joked they should rent out their walk-in closet if that unit can get ,050 a month. The studio does not include parking. Applicants must earn 2.5 times the rent, and have a credit score of at least 650. 1374

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - San Diego County leaders have stressed education over enforcement regarding the rules and laws surrounding the coronavirus, but there are laws in place to help stop the spread."There is civil liability and criminal liability," says Professor Joanna Sax from the California Western School of Law.Sax says many of the laws rely on a standard called "reasonable care" to determine liability."As long as you are taking precautions reasonably, then it's unlikely that you'll be held negligent. That would be the legal term," Sax says. For businesses, that means following the rules like posting a safe reopening plan and sticking to it to keep customers safe. It can also mean providing PPE and hand sanitizer for employees. But for businesses that aren't using "reasonable care," San Diego officials have shown the ability and willingness to use the laws to force compliance. One of the most prominent cases over the last few months involves Boulevard Fitness in University Heights. According to the city, that gym stayed open for indoor workouts for 45 days, violating the county's rules. City Attorney Mara Elliott threatened Boulevard Fitness with a ,500 fine for each day, citing "unfair business practices."The gym closed after receiving Elliott's letter and has since reopened while obeying county guidelines for capacity and distancing.Sax says those kinds of laws work for extreme cases, but may not apply for smaller violations."If businesses are not behaving reasonably and they are behaving recklessly, and they have no plans, and they're letting people in, maybe they should face liability," Sax says. "Those aren't the businesses that should be open to the public. They're doing a disservice to the rest of the community."As for individuals infecting other people, the California Health and Safety Code has strict standards.According to Section 120290, five things all need to happen for someone to be guilty of "intentional transmission."The Code says: 1988

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Researchers at the University of California, San Francisco are working on a spray designed to block the novel coronavirus from hijacking cells in the body, like a biological mask or internal personal protective equipment. They’re doing it by borrowing a defense mechanism from an unlikely source: llamas. The team, led by UCSF graduate student Michael Schoof, engineered a synthetic molecule based on one found in a llama’s immune system that acts like an antibody but is one-tenth the size.Human antibody treatments, known as convalescent plasma, require a transfusion in a hospital setting. But this smaller molecule, called a nanobody, can be easily self-administered via an inhaler or nasal spray and rapidly manufactured using yeast, Schoof said. The scientists named their product AeroNabs. They say it could be an inexpensive intervention for treating and preventing COVID-19 while the world waits for a vaccine.“We don't know how effective vaccines will be. We don't know how long it will take to rapidly deploy them, so we envision this product as hopefully a bridge until there is widespread, effective vaccination,” Schoof said.Once a vaccine is available, AeroNabs could offer protection for individuals who are unable to be inoculated for health reasons, he said, or an early treatment option. The team is in talks with commercial partners and hopes to begin clinical trials soon.In the 1980s, Belgian scientists discovered that about half of the antibodies in camels, llamas and alpacas are shaped differently than the antibodies found in other mammals, including humans. Researchers later learned they could use a fragment of these oddly shaped camelid antibodies to bind to antigens. Those fragments are called nanobodies.Currently, there is only one FDA-approved drug that uses nanobodies. Caplacizumab was approved last year to treat a rare blood disorder. The team at UCSF sifted through billions of nanobodies to find one that binded best to the spike proteins on the coronavirus, then engineered it to stick even better. The coronavirus uses its spikes to enter cells and replicate; the spikes are essentially the pathogen’s key into the body. By coating the spikes with nanobodies or antibodies, the viral key no longer fits into the body’s receptors and the virus can’t get in.“This works in the lab. It needs to be translated into the clinic,” said Schoof. The team at UCSF still needs to figure out the best delivery method, whether it is a nebulizer, an inhaler or a nasal spray. 2524

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – San Diego Mayor Kevin Faulconer announced Wednesday that the San Diego Padres will oversee the creation of an all-new, mixed-use district outside of Petco Park.Moving forward with plans to revitalize the neighborhood adjacent to the downtown ballpark, Faulconer announced the winning proposal to transform the space in the East Village known as Tailgate Park into the East Village Quarter -- a project consisting of retail, housing, open space, parking, and more, with the Padres as a partner. The area is bordered by 12th and Imperial avenues and K and 14th streets. The City of San Diego has owned the four blocks since the ballpark district was developed.Last December, the city formalized its intent to sell or lease the space, and on Wednesday, Faulconer said the Padres came up with the best proposal to revitalize the area. The city also held a virtual open house to get public input on the top two proposals and the community’s priorities for the development.Padres President Erik Gruepner said they want the space to embody the “live, work, play” vision of the East Village, so much of which is already influenced by the team’s presence.Gruepner spoke about holding neighborhood festivals and farmers markets to help create a feeling of community, turning a parking lot into a neighborhood. When it comes to parking, the Padres plan to add 600 more spaces than what currently exists in a multi-level structure. The cost for the project is expected to exceed billion. The proposal will go to the City Council for a review and vote, and if approved, the goal is to have a final plan in place by next year. 1637
