XI'AN, May 20 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Vice President Xi Jinping has urged local officials to help solve living difficulties for people who have suffered from a major earthquake.     Xi made the call during his inspection to northwestern Shaanxi Province, in which some counties were seriously affected by the deadly quake in neighboring Sichuan Province on May 12.     At Xujiaping village, Xi comforted villagers and encouraged them to resume production as early as possible. Among all 146 households of the village, 126 were affected by the quake and half of their houses were either damaged or flattened.     Xi urged local officials to offer whatever they could to help the people with rebuilding their homes.     The Vice President later came to a middle school, where he told the students and teachers the government had planned for the reconstruction of all quake-ravaged areas across the country.     He reminded local governments to carry out serious epidemic prevention, especially the safety of water and food after the disaster. BEIJING, June 20 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Hu Jintao on Friday hailed the 60th anniversary of the People's Daily, the voice of the Communist Party of China (CPC), and extended his salute to all Chinese journalists.     After inspecting the People's Daily, Hu encouraged reporters and editors to innovate their reporting styles and bring into a full play the paper's leading role.     He sent his greetings to the paper's overseas correspondents and asked them to link the transformation of the international situation with China's reform and opening-up. This was to improve the quality and influence of the paper's international reporting. BEIJING, Sept. 24 (Xinhua) -- China and Venezuela on Wednesday inked a series of agreements on wide-ranging fields, a sign of bilateral efforts to advance their strategic partnership to a new high.     The agreements came out of the summit talks in the Great Hall of the People as Beijing rolled out the red carpet for Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez.     The 12 new cooperative deals covered trade, oil, finance, education, justice, telecommunications, infrastructure, sports and cultural relics. PYONGYANG, April 21 (Xinhua) -- The torch relay in Pyongyang will enhance friendship between the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) and China, the DPRK's Olympic chief said Monday.     The event will promote the cooperation and exchanges in sports between the two countries, and will show their traditional friendship to the world, said Park Hak Seon, chairman of the National Olympic Committee of the DPRK.     The official made the remarks at a reception held by the Chinese Embassy to welcome the Beijing Olympic Flame to Pyongyang.     The reception was attended by senior DPRK officials, including Yang Hyong Sop, vice president of the Presidium of the Supreme People's Assembly, and Park Kwan O, chairman of the People's Committee of Pyongyang, foreign diplomats in Pyongyang and famous DPRK athletes.     Liu Xiaoming, Chinese Ambassador to the DPRK, expressed thanks to various departments of the DPRK for their hard work in preparing for the torch relay in Pyongyang.     He said he sincerely appreciates the strong support from the people of the DPRK to the Chinese people.     The Olympic torch which will be used to carry the sacred flame in Pyongyang was displayed at the reception.     The torch relay will be held on April 28 in Pyongyang, the 18thleg of its global trip.
