SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Mayor Kevin Faulconer Saturday detailed plans to redevelop the Sports Arena site, officially announcing what developers will tackle the project.According to Faulconer, the plan incorporates a mix of entertainment, housing, and parks."The vision for this property is for a world-class arena, park space and amenities," Faulconer said. "A new arena has always been a priority of mine, and it's the right time."Brookfield Housing and ASM Global were chosen to construct the new arena and thousands of housing units, beating out the other finalist, Toll Brothers Housing. The redevelopment area encompasses roughly 48 acres in the Midway-Pacific Highway Community area. At the press conference, representatives from the Gulls and the Seals spoke, saying they're excited for their teams to play in the new space. Faulconer said the city's goal is to include a new arena to replace Pechanga Arena."The vision for this property is for a world-class arena, park space and amenities," Faulconer said. "A new arena has always been a priority of mine, and it's the right time."The city also released several renderings of the planned development. Leaders said they are now looking toward November when Measure E will be on the ballot. This will determine if the 30-foot maximum height for buildings will remain, or if it will be raised. This will impact how tall the new facilities will be.San Diego Loyal SC, which had plans to build a modular soccer stadium at the site, commented on the announcement following the news conference. "Though the news from the city today felt like a punch in the gut, years being married to the sport of soccer has taught me that sometimes you can win on the field and not get the result that matters. I have also learned that tomorrow will come, and we will rise again,” said SD Loyal President Warren Smith. City News Service contributed to this report. 1905

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- If you're feeling a little behind on your sleep schedule, Wednesday is your day to catch up! February 28 is National Public Sleeping Day. Don't take it too far though, you might get in trouble if you nap at work! There are different types of naps, according to nationaldaycalendar.com. "The Power Nap is approximately 10 to 20 minutes long and can give a boost of energy to get us through the rest of the day," the website writes. "It also doesn’t leave us drowsy like some longer naps might and will also allow us to fall asleep at a decent time at night."Our Scripps Digital Producer created the above note for you to take to work or school. It probably won't work...but it least it will make you smile. Good luck catching up on zzz's!   802

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — If you're riding the bus to "Flavortown," there's only one stop in San Diego.Celebrity chef Guy Fieri was spotted at Ocean Beach's Hodad's location alongside owner Shane Hardin, the son of late owner Mike "Bossman" Hardin, on Monday. Pictures from local photographer Jim Grant show the "Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives" host mingling with the restaurant's crew and taking photos with fans.City of San Diego spokeswoman Alma Rife said the city had issued a "blanket permit," or filming throughout San Diego, for an untitled Food Network program from March 4-7. A Food Network spokesperson was not able to provide comment as to the nature of the filming.RELATED:Inventive eggs Benedict, dumpling soup highlight San Diego's foodie scene on YelpSeven San Diego burritos among the best in the U.S., ranking saysFieri is no stranger to the OB staple. He stopped by on past episodes of "Triple D," once in 2007 for the "Seaside Eats" episode and then again in 2013 for the episode, "All San Diego, All the Time."Hodad's has also been featured in other Food Network specials, including "Top 10 Burgers" and "With Bacon," the latter of which saw Fieri and other chefs dish on their favorite bacon eats.Fieri's kinship with the local burger joint inspired its own Hodad's burger: The Guido Burger, a pastrami-smothered burger with ketchup, pickles, swiss cheese, grilled onions, and spicy brown mustard.Monday, the chef posted a photo on Twitter of one fan's dedication to the delicious land which he coined: 1522

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — It has been over six months since a water main break spilled thousands of gallons of water into North Park streets, but some homeowners are still dealing with the aftermath.Jonathan Head has owned a triplex on Idaho street for almost twenty years."There's two buildings," Head said. "It was built in [the] 1940s."Back in October, a water main broke near his property. His tenants started to text him early that morning on October 4th. "It made my heart drop... it was like a river," Head said. While the water did not enter the living space, Head said it went into the vents flooding the crawl space beneath. "The wiring, the plumbing [was] completely saturated," Head said. He said city workers tried to fix the problem, but it was too late."By the time they got the equipment in, most of the water had penetrated the soil," Head said. He believes that made it difficult to dry out the property, which is why they are seeing problems with the foundation. Head said cracks below and inside the home developed. He filed a claim with the City of San Diego, but said he got no response."The city still has not compensated the clients entirely for the full scope of the damage," said Head's attorney, Evan Walker. There is now a lawsuit claiming roughly 5,000 worth of damage. "I think the city has known for some time about the precarious condition of its pipes and that it has done nothing," Walker added. Team 10 contacted the City Attorney's office. A spokesperson said they are reviewing the case. 1529

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - If you couldn't work, how far could you go without a paycheck? No one is immune to an unexpected injury or illness, and the financial hit can be devastating. The Social Security Administration (SSA) reports that one in four of today's 20-year-olds will become disabled for 90 days or more before retirement age. Having a plan for the long term can relieve a lot of stress if the unexpected does happen. One option is disability insurance; there's short-term and long-term. Disability insurance pays a portion of your income if you are suddenly unable to work because of illness, injury, or accident. You can get coverage through an employer or buy it from an insurer. According to State Farm, long-term disability insurance:Pays monthly income directly to you when you're unable to work because of a covered total disability. You choose the length of time you must be disabled before you start receiving benefits (Elimination Period) and the length of time you would receive benefits.Options include a five-year benefit period or a "to age 67" benefit option.Maximum monthly benefit amounts range from 0 to ,000, based on your income and occupation. You can customize your coverage with different riders. While different factors affect the cost, the annual price for a long-term disability insurance policy generally ranges from 1% to 3% of your annual income.According to the Council for Disability Awareness, 34.6 months is the duration of the average long-term disability claim. The nonprofit helps prepare people for unexpected injury through its five-step financial plan to give you a clearer understanding of your financial "big picture," including:Your sources of income, monthly expenses, and lifestyleThe impact a long-term disability could have on themPreparing a plan of action to address the crisisResources after life-changing disabilityMost people never expect a life-changing disability will happen to them, including San Diego resident Kat Blue. Blue was rear-ended at a red light on Feb. 1, 2018, and had previous head injuries before that."This one resulted in a concussion that just never went away," said Blue.A few weeks after the accident, Blue realized she could barely complete simple tasks like writing an email or talking on the phone. She suffered a traumatic brain injury (TBI), which would change her life forever. She constantly deals with nausea, dizziness, tetanus, and migraines. Blue has struggled to navigate the healthcare system and because she cannot work is constantly seeking resources so she can remain in San Diego."You have to advocate for yourself because there's no one within the system who is going to do it for you," said Blue. Blue says she does not have the resources to relocate and says San Diego offers a lot of support for TBI survivors. She's relied on Medicaid for medical care, which has helped with resources like a nurse care manager, but she says there are holes in the system."I'm still fighting to get a TBI specialist, I'm still trying to get a lot of the treatments and specialists and therapies that I believe could help me," said Blue. The San Diego County Health & Human Services Agency is ready to help San Diegans whose incomes have been impacted by an unexpected disability:CalFresh: Food assistance:Medi-Cal: Free or low-cost health coverage for children and adults with limited income and resources. If you qualify, you can enroll in Medi-Cal year-round.CalWORKS: Public assistance program that provides cash aid and services to eligible families that have a child(ren) in the home."You may not need our benefits today, but in the future, if you do we're here, and we encourage everyone to apply," said Rick Wanne, Director of Eligibility for the County of San Diego Health & Human Services Agency.Wanne says the County also has a close relationship with 211. "211 is a great resource for a number of reasons, they can provide general information over the phone about a whole variety of resources here in San Diego, additional food assistance, housing resources, where to find a local medical provider," said Wanne. Wanne said in addition to what the County offers many local nonprofits and other entities provide help.Blue says she's found the following resources helpful when advocating for herself:Legal AidCalifornia Department of Rehabilitation (DOR)Disability Rights CaliforniaBlue says she's also taken advantage of recreation opportunities through Sharp, some of which are free. Sharp also offers support groups for people with various disabilities. Another program that's been instrumental in Blue's recovery is Love Your Brain Yoga, a free program for TBI survivors. "A good part of my day is spent just trying to feel better, just trying to get well enough to do what I need to do that day," said Blue.Blue remains hopeful she'll get the care needed for her healing and says she'll continue to do everything possible to stay in the city she calls home. 4971
