SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – There’s a hidden gem right off the I-5 freeway in Mission Hills that took over 20 years to create. “It’s just been a wonderful thing,” said Edna Harper, designer of Harper’s Topiary Garden. Her garden sits on the massive hillside of her home and has been attracting visitors for years. More than 50 whimsical characters are featured, each one inspired by Harper’s world travels. The project started as a bet between Harper and her husband."My husband said to me, 'Oh, I don't think you can do this,'" Harper said. "He didn't know how much it was gonna cost him ... he said, 'alright if you win, I'll pay for the gardener and the water.'" The garden has become her canvas and a place for your imagination to run wild. “Whatever you want it to be, that’s what my garden is,” Harper said. “It makes people happy, and that makes me happy.” If you decide to visit the property off Vine and Union in Mission Hills, the owners ask that you don’t climb or destroy the plans. Since she took over last November, each dog that has passed through here has found a forever home.“As of November 1st, we have saved 565 dogs and cats out of Taft,” said Kayla Denney. Denney is flying out to San Diego, California, to accept her award on Monday, an honor she says she knew nothing about.“There are thousands of applicants, I didn't know I was nominated,” said Denney. “I became the 2019 unsung hero for the country so one person in the whole United States and it still just blows my mind that that's still a thing.”The award is for her lifesaving efforts that have made a difference in Taft.Out of thousands of nominees, Denney made the top 5 in February, and was awarded ,000. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Four people were arrested following a Border Patrol chase that made its way through San Diego Wednesday afternoon. The chase started after noon on Highway 94 in East County after the driver failed to stop for an immigration inspection at the Border Patrol checkpoint in Jamul. The agency said the chase made its way through the county before ending in San Diego's Legacy Walk neighborhood. The four suspects then stopped and fled the vehicle near San Pasqual Street and Logan Avenue. According to the agency, the suspects then ran into the Mountain View Beckworth Library where they were taken into custody. All four suspects were in the U.S. illegally, Border Patrol says. 704
