SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Youth sports leaders are holding a protest in front of the San Diego County Administration Building on Saturday to voice their concerns over the state’s regulations regarding games and competitions.Currently, under California's coronavirus restrictions, youth sports can practice, as long as six feet of social distancing can be maintained. Bob Turner is both Executive Director of Presidio Soccer League and President of the Southern California Youth Soccer Association and said the athletes should be able to play games.He said they have created safety plans, including spacing out the times of games and shortening games to avoid crowds, only allowing one parent for each athlete, and also requiring masks of all referees, parents, and substitute players. NewsomA spokesperson for San Diego County said the county has also been asked about plans for youth sports. They also asked the state and have not heard about what’s next.“This is small potatoes to them compared to a lot of the other things opening but it is our youth and what’s more important than our kids. We’re destroying these kids with what’s happening through the schools and now we’re taking this away. This is the only outlet some of these kids have,” said Turner.Turner added that he’s heard of some athletes traveling to other states that have more relaxed restrictions so they can play in games and tournaments.Turner said counties in California are planning to all hold protests to voice their concerns. He said any athlete is welcome at their protest Saturday, and hopes the unified voices will be heard by the state.“We need to bring awareness. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — With President-elect Joe Biden and Vice President-elect Kamala Harris projected to take the White House, Harris will have to resign her seat in the U.S. Senate.The power to fill that seat would fall to Governor Gavin Newsom, and the political jockeying for his pick is well underway.“This is one of the best jobs in American politics, one of the most prominent jobs in American politics and every California political leader wants it,” said UC San Diego political science chair Thad Kousser.Kousser expects Newsom will want to make history with the diversity of his pick, should he have the opportunity.Others are thinking along the same lines. Groups like Equality California have sent the governor a list of their preferred LGBTQ candidates, which would be a first for California.Assemblywoman Lorena Gonzalez tweeted out her own list Friday of Latino candidates, another potential first for the state.“We are the largest demographic in this state, and growing,” she wrote. “It’s time we have a Latino/a US Senator.”Political analyst Laura Fink says the governor is going to have to balance a lot of competing interests.“First and foremost, what's going to be best for California? And then of course, what's going to be best for Governor Newsom moving forward as he looks toward his political ambitions,” Fink said, referring to the possibility that Newsom could run for president.There have been dozens of names floated as potential picks, including California Secretary of State Alex Padilla and state Attorney General Xavier Becerra.Both are sons of Mexican immigrants who would be the first Latino senators in California history.But don’t pencil either in just yet, according to Fink.“Kamala Harris is leaving one of only 26 women in the Senate. That's one out of four. Last time I checked, [women] are north of 50 percent of the population. So that is something that will need to come into consideration,” she said.Rep. San Diego (KGTV)- After spending nearly months in the ICU, a local healthcare worker, who tested positive for COVID-19, is sharing his story."At that time, I thought for certain I was going to die."Ezequiel Melendez Jr., also known as Zeke, spent 57 days in the hospital after contracting COVID-19.The Respiratory Care Technician says he's always been an active and healthy person. He did not have any underlying medical conditions. His struggle with coronavirus started in early March with flu-like symptoms."I didn't meet the criteria at the time for COVID testing," says Melendez. "You were supposed temperature of 102; mine was 100. They told me don't go back to work until 24 hours with no symptoms."Melendez says seven days later, his symptoms got worse."Next thing I know, I'm laying on a gurney preparing for intubation with an endotracheal tube."Melendez's girlfriend, Grace Carbajal, who is also a healthcare worker, says it was a challenge seeing him sick."Being a nurse and not being able to be there at the bedside, also being a loved one and not being able to be there for him and with him, was very difficult," says Carbajal.After spending weeks in the hospital, Melendez was released in late May. He says it will be a while until he feels like himself again. He is still under doctors' care and has physical therapy weekly.He also has a message for everyone as the pandemic continues."We need protection and everyone doing their part to wear masks," says Melendez. "I was one who thought it was just something like the flu, maybe exaggerated at the time. But when it happened to me, it was a smack to the face."Melendez says he would like to thank everyone for the support and those who donated to the GoFund Me that was created while he was in the hospital. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Two men died after authorities said they jumped from a bridge following a car crash on a Carmel Valley freeway.It's the fourth incident where someone has died after falling off of a San Diego area bridge in a little more than a year.In April Team 10 spoke to Gwendolyn Sneed. Her partner of 20 years, Bob Bruno, died in a tragic incident at the Pine Valley Bridge.Bruno died, not in the accident on the bridge, but while trying to help a family in need. He'd seen a vehicle stopped on the side of the bridge and pulled over to help. Sneed said a family with a baby was stranded. Bruno was in the process of helping move the baby seat when a Ford F-150 pickup truck drove over a patch of ice and barreled toward Bruno.RELATED: 2 dead, 2 teen girls injured after jump from San Diego bridge following car crashBruno jumped out of the way to avoid being hit, but instead of landing on solid ground, he hopped over the side of the bridge guardrail and fell into the canyon below."I think Caltrans just needs to take a look at what the safety measures could be, lighting, higher guard rails, I don't know what that is, signage," Sneed said at the time.While Bruno's incident is tragic, Team 10 discovered two other unrelated incidents where people lost their lives falling off of San Diego-area bridges in the span on a year.In September 2018, Caltrans Highway Maintenance Lead Worker William Casdorph fell while he and his crew were doing maintenance work on the southbound State Route 163 overcross to southbound Interstate 805. He sustained significant injuries and died at the hospital.In April 2018, Martin Lapisch fell to his death from State Route 125 in the Bonita area after a crash in which his car struck and killed a deer on the freeway. Authorities said it appeared he jumped over the side of the bridge, possibly to get to a safe location, and didn't realize there was a 40-foot drop.In April, investigator Adam Racusin asked Caltrans about safety when it comes to bridges and overpasses."We are always looking for improvements of safety whether it's on our bridges or our regular highways," Caltrans Headquarters Division Chief of Maintenance Dennis Agar said at the time.Agar told 10News the agency always talks about incidents or close calls and how to prevent them. They even travel to other states to see how they handle safety."We make sure we do everything we can to address the concerns, especially with safety that brings up to our office and we try to address it statewide," he said in April.On Wednesday Team 10 asked Caltrans if there are any safety measures the agency is looking at to try and prevent this type of tragedy.Late Wednesday afternoon Caltrans Public Information Officer Edward Cartagena released a statement saying, "Caltrans extends its sympathies to the families of the deceased and hopes for a quick recovery for the injured. Although Caltrans will be looking into this incident, we want to allow the CHP to conduct and conclude their investigation."The California Highway Patrol says if your vehicle gets stuck on a bridge try and get to a safe location. If that's not possible, the best thing to do is stay in your vehicle with your seatbelt on and calls 911. 3226

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Two horses died Sunday after being seriously injured during separate races at the Del Mar Racetrack.A third horse was also hospitalized with an injury.The track tweeted at 2:17 p.m. confirming that in Sunday's third race, Ghost Street suffered a "catastrophic injury to his left front sesamoid and was humanely euthanized."Ghost Street was a 3-year-old gelding.A short while later, Prayer Warrior, a 3-year-old colt, was euthanized after suffering an injury to his front leg in Sunday's sixth race. 527
