ST. LOUIS (AP) — A grand jury has indicted the St. Louis couple who displayed guns while hundreds of racial injustice protesters marched on their private street. A lawyer for Mark McCloskey and his wife, Patricia McCloskey, confirmed the indictments Tuesday. A spokeswoman for Circuit Attorney Kim Gardner declined comment. The McCloskeys, who are both attorneys, have become folk heroes among some conservatives. They argue that they were simply exercising their Second Amendment right to bear arms, and were protected by Missouri’s castle doctrine law that allows the use of deadly force against intruders. The case has caught the attention of President Donald Trump, and Republican Missouri Gov. Mike Parson has said he will pardon the couple if they are convicted. The McCloskeys also were featured speakers on the first night of the Republican National Convention. They’ve accused the “leftist” Democratic St. Louis leadership for their plight.Gardner, a Democrat, charged the couple with felony unlawful use of a weapon. She said the display of guns risked bloodshed at what she called an otherwise peaceful protest.Watkins said that in addition to the weapons charge, the grand jury indictment includes a tampering with evidence charge. It wasn’t clear what led to that additional count, he said. 1309

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell vowed on Tuesday that legislators would not go home for the holidays without an approval of a stimulus bill.“We're not leaving here without a COVID package. It's not gonna happen. We're gonna stay here until we get a COVID package. No matter how long it takes, we’ll be here,” McConnell said.Last week, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi made a similar proclamation. But both sides have been working on economic relief for months, but have failed to come to any sort of compromise. But a major sticking point is on whether companies should be protected from coronavirus-related lawsuits. The White House and McConnell have said companies need this protection in order to stay open amid the pandemic. Pelosi and Democrats are against the proposal, citing concerns that businesses will not follow public health guidelines.“This is protection for our small businesses, so that they're not held liable for COVID incidences through no fault of their own,” White House press secretary Kayleigh McEnany said on Tuesday. ”And (Pelosi is) really playing up to the trial lawyers and opposing liability protection, which should be something that's just mere common sense.”Two weeks ago, a bipartisan group of legislators proposed a 0 billion stimulus plan that would extend funds for additional unemployment benefits for up to 18 weeks per worker. The legislation also would replenish funds for the Paycheck Protection Program, which helped companies affected by the pandemic make payroll. There would also be 0 billion earmarked for state and local governments, which have seen a drop in tax revenue due to the pandemic. There is in additional billion allocated toward the transportation industry, most notably for airlines, which have seen an over 50% reduction in business since March. But the bipartisan group’s newest proposal is to make the funding involving state and local governments a separate bill. It’s unclear, however, if that measure would gain enough support to pass, given McConnell’s and Trump’s past opposition to providing pandemic relief to state and local governments facing cuts amid a drop in tax revenue.Another area of contention is on whether Congress should provide Americans with a second round of stimulus checks. While the bipartisan proposal doesn’t call for checks, members of both parties have suggested that a final proposal should include stimulus checks. 2426

Special counsel Robert Mueller's office dropped more potentially damning details -- from an allegation of "additional criminal conduct" to personal financial troubles -- in a response to Paul Manafort's request to change his bail proposal on Friday. The newly discovered alleged criminal conduct "includes a series of bank frauds and bank fraud conspiracies," a filing from the special counsel's office said on Friday night.Read the entire court filing in the window below. No new charges have been filed in open court against Manafort since he pleaded not guilty to nine counts of money laundering and making false statements about his business on October 30. But CNN has reported that additional indictments against the former Trump campaign chairman are being prepared. In their filing Friday, prosecutors allege Manafort received a million mortgage on a house of his in Fairfax, Virginia, by giving the Federal Savings Bank doctored business statements that overstated his wealth. The special counsel's office said it could show the court evidence of this bank fraud "and other bank frauds and conspiracies" at its next hearing, which has not yet been set.Manafort proposed the house in Fairfax as one of four properties that could secure his bail. Another is an apartment he owns in Trump Tower in New York, which is at risk of foreclosure, the prosecutors said. The prosecutors also noted that Manafort has "questioned his ability to maintain the payments on all his mortgages" and that members of his family aren't "willing to assume the risk" of helping him.Manafort earned a judge's approval to be released from house arrest two months ago, if he showed proper documentation and could secure a million bail with assets and properties. He has not been able to clear the judge's hurdles, and proposed a different approach to securing his bail Friday afternoon.The-CNN-Wire? & ? 2018 Cable News Network, Inc., a Time Warner Company. Some people are returning to work after months of being at home. It's a big change for people and pets as well.Veterinarians warn pets who haven't experienced separation anxiety before could still be at risk of having it now. Many have gotten used to a new routine of having humans at home.Other dogs may be more prone to this anxiety if they already suffer from other types of it, like when there's a thunderstorm or loud noises.“It’s similar to people having general anxiety and being higher strung,” said Dr. Jessica Romine, an internist with Blue Pearl Veterinary Partners. “So, if you notice that your dog tends to have a really strong reaction to storms, that could be a warning sign that they may also have that.”Some other signs include your pet not being able to separate themselves from you when you go to other rooms in the house. If they damage things at home whenever you're away for short periods of time, Romine says they’re not angry, they’re panicked. If you're headed back to work soon, a few things you can do to ease their anxiety is practice going away for a while, practice crate training. When you return home, try not to make a big deal out of it.“It’s a completely natural instinct to greet our dogs that are just thrilled to see us,” said Romine. “We're just as thrilled to see them and coo over them, but that really just makes it a huge highlight when you leave and come back, so the general recommendation when you leave and come back is to greet them briefly and then try and let them calm down.”Reward calm behavior. Sometimes medication may help. Talk to your veterinarian about this. 1621

Social distancing is pushing more people waiting to vote beyond the limit some states have for keeping political persuasion away from the polls.Within a week of Election Day, hundreds of thousands of ballots have been cast in the 2020 general election, and long lines have stacked up outside of polling places across the country.Social distancing measures put in place to stem the spread of the coronavirus has stretched voters into longer lines, and security expert Doug Parisi, director of training with Safedefend, said the longer lines expose more people to potentially aggressive electioneers.States have various rules about how close to a polling place any political persuasion can be, some as close as 50 feet from where ballots are cast. Beyond that limit, electioneers can yell, wave signs, and try to influence voters as they approach the ballot box."The biggest thing COVID has done for us is that it has spread us out," Parisi said.He said the combination of political passions running high this year and large groups of voters on Election Day could create the recipe for emotional confrontations."There are organizations out there that have told their people to go vote early so you can express your voice on Election Day," Parisi said. "So there are plans to disrupt things."Parisi said people should do several things to prepare for a potential confrontation.First, he said to stay alert while waiting in long lines by regularly pulling your attention away from a phone or book and scanning the crowds."I don't mean just momentarily," he said. "I mean you actually have to make eye contact and break concentration."Read the crowd's emotions, keep an eye out for unusual packages or bags, know the neighborhood, and identify multiple exits out of any indoor polling location."In situations where there is a crisis, or something happens, God forbid, you need to have an alternative," he said.Parisi also advised voters not to engage with any electioneer. He said talking politics while waiting to vote wouldn't help anything, but, if you get into a situation where you're forced to talk with someone, it's OK to lie."If you need to tell something to somebody outside just to get them to agree with that, that's my advice," he said, "just go along to get along. Once you get inside, vote your conscience."Parisi stressed that, if a situation escalates to violence, no one should attempt to handle it themselves. He said to tell a poll worker or call the authorities. His final advice; vote with a group of people you know.He said there's strength in numbers, and asking other people to vote with you would increase the number of people casting ballots. This story originally reported by Sean DeLancey on ktnv.com. 2730
