MOHEGAN LAKE, N.Y. — Angelina Friedman, a 102-year-old nursing home resident, recently survived her second bout with COVID-19, according to her daughter Joanne Merola."Not only has she beaten COVID at 101, she's beaten it at 102," Merola said.Friedman also has the unique distinction of living through two global pandemics.During the 1918 pandemic, Angelina Sciales was born on a passenger ship taking immigrants from Italy to New York City."She was born on a ship coming from Italy during the Spanish flu," Merola said earlier this year. "Her birthday was Oct. 18, 1918."Angelina's mother died giving birth on the ship."She was helped by her two sisters," Merola said of her mother.When Angelina's father reunited with his daughters in New York, he took them to live in Brooklyn."She was one of 11 children," Merola said. "She's the last one surviving."Angelina eventually married a man named Harold Friedman. The couple battled cancer later in life, but only Angelina overcame the disease.She's lost most of her hearing and her vision is bad, but she's retained her zest for life.Friedman, a resident of the North Westchester Restorative Therapy and Nursing Center, battled COVID-19 most recently in October, according to her daughter.Her first bout with the virus happened in March when she was taken to the hospital for a minor medical procedure.When she initially tested positive for COVID-19, the procedure was postponed and Friedman spent a week in the hospital. She then returned to the nursing home and was isolated in her room.After running a fever on and off for several weeks, Friedman finally tested negative for coronavirus on April 20.At the time, Friedman's daughter received a late-night phone call from nurses. They said Friedman was doing great, that she was eating again and looking for yarn for crocheting."My mother is a survivor," Merola said in April. "She survived miscarriages, internal bleeding and cancer."Six months after that first COVID-19 diagnosis, Friedman's daughter said she received a call from the nursing home in late October, "to tell me she tested positive again.""She had symptoms — fever, a dry cough," Merola said. "...they gave her a bunch of meds. They thought she might also have the flu."More staff and residents at the nursing home were getting sick, according to Merola, so the older residents were put in isolation.Merola said she got daily updates on the situation, and on Nov. 17 she received great news."My invincible mother tested negative," she said.After another test came back negative, Friedman was moved out of isolation and back into her regular room.Merola said she attributes her mother's survival to "an iron will to live.""She's not the oldest to survive COVID, but she may be the oldest to survive it twice," she said.This story was originally published by Mary Murphy on WPIX in New York City. 2868

MUNCIE, Ind. -- Muncie area hospitals are on the lookout for a woman accused of pretending to be pregnant to gain access to labor and delivery floors.Ball Memorial Hospital reported they are working with police and have alerted all personnel to be on the lookout for the woman.It is unclear at this time if there is any surveillance video of the woman and the hospital would not say whether they have identified her.Ball Memorial Hospital released the following statement Thursday:“While no related criminal activity has taken place or charges have been filed, hospital police, leadership and team members remain vigilant. The safety and the very best care of patients and guests are always the highest priority.”Community Health North Hospital, which delivers the most babies in Indiana, said it’s critical to run regular drills to make sure no one has access to newborns that shouldn’t.“As soon as a baby is delivered we put identification on a baby which does include a security tag,” said Jamie Phillippe, Director of NICU/PICU/Pediatrics at Community Health North. “Here down in delivery they could have anywhere from 70 to 80 moms and babies.”Phillippe said the maternity and newborn ICU units are locked down at all times and no one that isn’t supposed to be down there gets in but when situations like this arise they make sure to share the information with all staff members so everyone is aware and they pay constant attention to video feeds around the building.  1501

NASHVILLE, Tenn. — AT&T said crews have made significant progress restoring service to the region on Sunday morning following an explosion on Friday morning outside an AT&T data center.The explosion impacted widespread service interruption reaching outside of just Middle Tennessee. On Sunday morning, the company said power has been restored to four floors of the building and more than 65% of mobile sites affected by the explosion have been restored. More than three feet of water was pumped out of the building's basement on Saturday, however, access to some of the lowers is still limited. AT&T said on Sunday crews will be adding additional cabling and more generators to provide more power into the building to help with restoration efforts."Teams are working to safely bring additional equipment online and reroute services through other facilities in the region. While mobility services have been restored in many areas, we still have more than 17 portable cell sites on the air to aid in communication, including for restoration teams and first responders," AT&T said in an update. "We are bringing in additional resources to support the recovery of wireline voice and data services and expect to have a fleet of 24 additional trailers of disaster recovery equipment on-site by the end of the day."The company did not provide an exact time when it expects service to fully be restored. More than 40 percent of attendees at an overnight summer camp became infected with Covid-19 within days before officials shut it down, according to the CDC.Local media reports it was a YMCA camp near a lake in Rabun County, Georgia.More than 260 staff and campers tested positive for the coronavirus, out of a total 597 people who were at the camp sometime between when it opened and when it closed in mid-June. Of the 260 who tested positive, 231 were campers aged 6 to 17 years old.In their report published Friday, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says camp officials followed most of their recommended safety protocols. They say the two measures not implemented were cloth masks for campers and opening windows and doors for increased ventilation in buildings. Masks were required for staff members.The camp held orientation for staff members and trainees between June 17 to 21, then were joined by hundreds of kids on June 21 for a week-long camp session.On June 23, a teen staff member left the camp after developing chills the night before. They tested positive for Covid-19, and the camp began sending kids home on June 24. The entire camp was closed June 27.The camp was adhering to Georgia’s Executive Order that allowed overnight camps and required negative coronavirus tests less than 11 days before attending.“These findings demonstrate that SARS-CoV-2 spread efficiently in a youth-centric overnight setting, resulting in high attack rates among persons in all age groups, despite efforts by camp officials to implement most recommended strategies to prevent transmission,” says the CDC report on this outbreak.From the 136 cases where the CDC was able to gather symptom data, about 26 percent of those who tested positive for coronavirus had no symptoms at the time. 1804
