SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - People looking to buy a new or used car may have to hurry if they want to take advantage of the Coronavirus Pandemic's best deals and discounts.Recent studies from the California New Car Dealers Association show that sales of new cars in San Diego were down by 18.6% in the first quarter of 2020 compared to the same time of 2019. That's better than the state average of 21% but still worrisome for the industry.President Paul Dyke says his dealership saw sales drop in the 10-15% range at El Cajon Ford. But he says the company did a great job of offering deals to bring people into the lots, such as low-interest financing, long term payment plans, and lower prices."Zero percent is always something that gets people moving," says Dyke. "Now for the first time in Ford's history, doing it at 84 months on quite a few of the models really kept things going."The CNDCA says the Pandemic forced the industry to readjust its outlook for the year. They now predict new car sales to reach about 1.5 million in 2020, down from 2.1 million in 2019. If sales stay slow, it could be the worst year for new car sales since the Great Recession.Meanwhile, used cars are flooding the market as rental companies upgrade their fleet.Hertz recently filed for bankruptcy. The company iSeeCars.com did a study on their prices and found that Hertz was offering sales discounts in May that were 43% greater than the discounts they offered in April."There are still plenty of deals to be had," says Amada Lasik from iSeeCars.com. "That's especially true for cars that have been lingering on lots for a while, so we invite consumers to do as much research as they can."Manheim, a company that does used car auctions across the country, says used cars have been staying on lots for longer than usual. According to their data, almost 64% of used cars sold within 30 days back in February. By March, that number had dropped to 53%. The longer a car stays on the lot, the more likely a dealer will offer it at a lower price.Manheim also found that used car sales were down 34% in April compared to 2019, while wholesale used car prices dropped more than 11%.All that being said, experts believe these numbers will bounce back over the summer as restrictions ease.Dyke says his most significant concern for the industry is inventory. Since factories were closed for several months during the Pandemic, dealerships won't have as many cars to sell in July and August.Dyke says the companies will raise prices and eliminate the deals as demand increases while supply dwindles. 2574

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- On Thursday, January 3, the newest members of Congress will head to Washington D.C. to be sworn in. Among them is Mike Levin, who will represent California's 49th Congressional District. Levin, an environmental attorney, ran a campaign focused on younger voters. During the campaign, he cast his opponent, Diane Harkey as a “rubber stamp" for President Donald Trump. The district was previously represented by Darrell Issa. Juan Varges of the 51st Congressional District will also head to Washington. Varges made headlines recently after pointing the finger at the Trump administration for the situation at the border after hundreds of migrants rushed the San Ysidro Port of Entry. The 51st Congressional District consists of south San Diego County, Imperial County and California’s entire U.S./Mexico border. Also in Washington for the swearing in is Congressman Scott Peters of California’s 52nd District. The district includes the cities of Coronado and Poway as well as most of northern San Diego. Peters was first elected in 2012. In 2018, Peters introduced legislation to provide a tax credit who paid more than 30 percent of their gross income on rent and utilities. Rep. Susan Davis was re-elected in 2018 and represents California’s 53rd Congressional District. The district stretches from I-5 and Balboa Park through Mission Valley to East County and includes much of the heart of San Diego.Davis has been serving the district since 2001 and in 2018, won against her opponent, Morgan Murtaugh. Heading to Washington also is Congressman Duncan Hunter of California’s 50th Congressional District. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Police are searching for an at-risk man who disappeared from a senior living facility late Saturday afternoon. According to police, 77-year-old Mario Aello left The Shores Post-Acute senior living facility around 4:45 p.m. Saturday. Aello reportedly told another patient he had plans to leave the facility to visit his sister in Sonora, Mexico. Aello suffers from short-term dementia and type two diabetes, police say. Aello is described as five feet, seven inches tall with brown hair. He was last seen wearing a blue t-shirt, a black and gray jacket, blue shorts and brown shoes. 610

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Neighbors say overnight surveillance video of a tagger in action is a glimpse of an ongoing, frustrating problem.Near Euclid Avenue and Polk Avenue, there is a church, an elementary school, and a sight Leanne Montano has seen before."Sad they're destroying someone else's property," said Montano.Video shows what unfolded just down the street. Just before 2 a.m., a motion-activated light flashes, but these vandals are undeterred. With another man and a person on a bike nearby, someone in a cap and hoodie casually begins spray painting the back wall of a home. For more than 40 seconds, he tags the wall, before he and his cohorts leave.It appears they weren't done. 10News found similar tags on fences, and garage door after garage door. A block away at Euclid Elementary, there was more graffiti. Montano's place was spared, but her home has been hit several times before. She says tagging - including the school - is a weekly occurrence."Tagging leads to other activities that aren't safe. My concern as a parent and resident is the children's safety and them walking to school, feeling safe. It allows other people to treat our neighborhood like crap. If we don't take pride in our neighborhood, who else is going to?" said Montano.The City of San Diego offers rewards up to 0 for the arrest and conviction of graffiti vandals. 1364

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Neighbors in Hillcrest say an abandoned church has become a campground for the homeless. The church sold the land to developer LMC North Park Holdings in 2018. They were still leasing it out until about a month ago. That's when residents say the homeless started moving in. "It's more or less the drug crowd, sex trafficking, stuff like that that winds up utilizing these areas," he said. The spot on Park Boulevard and Meade Avenue is boarded up, covered in graffiti, and littered with needles. On Tuesday, firefighters say transients smoking drugs started a fire at another vacant building a few blocks down. Passante says it's just a matter of time before that happens at the church. "It's the same people you see over and over and over again and most of them have some kind of mental illness," said Passante. "The quicker places like this can be demolished the less we'll have that problem.LMC North Park Holdings says they are aware of the problem and have hired 24/7 security. Our crews didn't see any security guards while out there for several hours gathering the story. They say they've been waiting on permits and have plans to start demolition by the end of the year. 1206
