SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Restaurants are feeling backed into a corner after the pandemic forced them to add outdoor seating and Saturday brought cold rain and high winds. As the clouds rolled in, businesses across San Diego braced for impact."We were planning on covering everything up but we were kind of waiting and seeing just how big the storm was going to be," Whiskey Girl Manager Jake Southworth said.In the Gaslamp, he says they've been lucky this weekend, "We were ready to go with more of the tarps, to put out but waited till midnight when we were closed anyway, so definitely dodged a bullet there and today again it looks like it's going to hold off until later so I feel like we're still going to be doing good."Whiskey Girl is on a section of Fifth Avenue that shuts down to vehicle traffic Thursday through Saturday, allowing restaurants to spill into the street and seat more customers. The extra chairs help them stay afloat, but outside the rain and future winter weather are putting a damper on their options. Some businesses put up pop-up shades and umbrellas to provide some shelter against the weather."I mean it does open a lot more seating having outside but we'll see what the weather sends us," Southworth said.Every restaurant is also holding its breath, waiting to see if the county drops into the purple most restrictive tier next week, which would mean no indoor dining at all."How can I ask someone to spend, you know - on a drink if they're sitting outside shivering and the rain's coming through?" Tipsy Crow Director of Operations Nathan Colonero said they would have to close down and let go of their staff. The threat of the purple tier has been hanging over San Diegan's heads for a month and a half. Many businesses are frustrated with the roller coaster of changes, and hopeful a new president will mean changes that will help them through. 1885

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - San Diego Gas & Electric is warning customers of a scam in which people are getting phone calls and emails saying they owe hundreds of dollars for a new electrical meter.San Diego resident Maria Genova almost fell victim to the scam."It was very elaborate, very credible, very persistent and very convincing," she said.Genova showed 10News an email she received, and Iit had the SDG&E logo and even a QR code. The email said she owed 8.63 for a meter upgrade and if she didn't pay it, her service would be suspended. It also promised hundreds of dollars of other fees for removal, locksmith services and more.Genova also got a pair of phone calls about the issue, which had her convinced that it was legitimate."I was about ready to pay," said Genova. "I had my credit card in hand. But as soon as he said I had to pay cash, I knew there was something wrong."Genova called SDG&E, and Tthey told her the email and phone calls were not from the company. In a statement, SDG&E told 10News that they will never charge customers to replace a smart electric meter and that if they need to do any maintenance on a meter, technicians will contact the resident before doing any work.SDG&E said they've received reports of more than 13,600 scam phone calls already in 2019. It's something they constantly monitor, and they have a page on their website dedicated to helping people identify and avoid scams.Genova said she's glad she didn't lose any money and hopes other people can learn from her close call."Ask questions if you have any doubt," she said. "Call the company themselves, ask if this is true or not before you give anyone your information."Here is the full statement from SDG&E:"We can confirm that this particular case is indeed a scam. The important thing for our customers to know is that SDG&E will not charge them to come out and replace a smart electric meter. The exception to this is when customers choose to opt-out of having a smart meter and ask for an analog model instead. The cost for the opt-out is a one-time meter change fee of and an additional monthly charge, over a three-year period.SDG&E proactively tracks and maintains 1.45 million electric meters in our service territory daily. If we need to replace a malfunctioning meter, our technicians will knock on the door before changing it. If our customers have any questions or concerns about emails or phone calls they receive from people claiming to be with SDG&E, they can always reach out to our customer service team at 1-800-411-7343 to verify the information. We also encourage customers to file a police report in cases where they suspect fraud.Unfortunately, utility scams are a nationwide problem. This year, SDG&E has so far received reports of more than 13,600 scam calls targeting our customers. For tips on how to spot utility scams, visit sdge.com/scams." 2920

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — San Diego County law enforcement officials have joined together to decry the death of a black man who died after a Minneapolis police officer knelt on his neck until he passed out.Friday, San Diego Sheriff Bill Gore was the latest official to issue a statement, saying "we must do better" on Twitter."Now, as frustrating as it may be, we must let the criminal justice system run its course. The men and women of the San Diego Sheriff's Department hold ourselves to a very high standard and work everyday to build trust with the communities we serve. Mr. Floyd's death in Minneapolis is a harsh reminder of how the actions of a few can quickly erode that trust," the sheriff wrote.RELATED: La Mesa officer in arrest video placed on leave, pending investigationEarlier this week, San Diego Police Chief David Nisleit also issued a statement echoing the same call for departments to "do better.""The SDPD expresses its sincere condolences to the family of George Floyd. Our profession must do better," Nisleit wrote. "We will continue to work tirelessly to build trust, establish clear policies, ensure consistent training, and maintain open and honest dialogue with our communities."RELATED: Prosecutor: Officer laid on George Floyd’s neck for almost nine minutesChula Vista's Police Chief Roxana Kennedy added, in part, that "we recognize that law enforcement must continually foster a professional culture that prioritizes compassion and care for human life. While I hope and pray an incident like this would never occur in Chula Vista, it is important to openly acknowledge examples of police misconduct so that we remain vigilant in the course of our work."Floyd's death sparked mass protests across the nation and riots in Minneapolis this week. RELATED: Officer who knelt on George Floyd's neck has been charged with his murderThe officer seen in witness video of the arrest, Minneapolis police Officer Derek Chauvin, has been fired, arrested, and charged with third-degree murder and manslaughter in connection with Floyd's death. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — San Diego coffee drinkers plenty to be buzzed about with the local java scene.Recently, Mostra Coffee in Carmel Mountain was named Micro Coffee Roaster of the Year by Roast Magazine. The company, led by Filipino-American friends Jelynn Malone, Beverly Magtanong, Sam Magtanong, and Mike Arquines, has operated in San Diego since 2013 and gained a reputation for their creative drinks."We dreamt up this company and wanted our Filipino culture to be a part of it, but we didn't know anything about coffee or where to begin to source Philippine coffee," said Malone. "All we had was a dream to give back and help people."RELATED: San Diego coffee houses to grab a cup of coffeeWhile Mostra's efforts are finding national acclaim, it's become part of the local trend in coffee that's starting to turn heads."Seven-10 years ago the San Diego coffee scene was simple with only a handful of coffee roasters in town that roasted good, solid coffee," said Arquines. "Traditional lattes, cappuccinos and a sprinkle of a few manual pour over methods. Maybe even a few shops carried something called 'cold brew' ... if you were lucky of course. Much simpler times."Today, the scene is brewing some delicious offerings.RELATED: City Heights coffee shop owner brings community closer to nature, one another"Fast forward to 2019. You now have more than a couple dozen talented roasters (with 2-3 opening every couple months), each with a varying range of eclectic menu offerings, roast styles and gorgeous interiors worthy of any [Instagram] post or lifestyle blog," Arquines added.Mraz Family Farms grew the first geisha coffee bean in San Diego recently, putting America's Finest City on the coffee growing map. The farm, developed by Grammy-winning musician Jason Mraz, grows about 2,800 coffee trees with several other varieties. The farm partnered with Frinj Coffee to offer the beans. Frinj CEO Jay Ruskey says Southern California is ripe to become a powerhouse for coffee growers.RELATED: San Diego businesses put the planet ahead of profits to go green“We would love to see another 50,000 coffee plants here in Southern California this year, and expand to millions in the next ten years,” Ruskey told 10News back in March. “I see a rapid expansion I think it's going to be huge [in San Diego]."The rare coffee is generally grown in Panama, but made its way into Bird Rock Coffee Roasters — which was Roast Magazine's 2009 and 2012 Roaster of the Year.Jeff Taylor, with Bird Rock Coffee Roasters, says it's not the quantity of roasters in San Diego but the quality that is putting the region on the map."Beginning with craft beer, wines and now coffees. Taste makers and brew masters get the craft of what we are doing," Taylor said. "It's not so much the number of roasters, but the quality of roasters in the market."RELATED: Coffee grown in San Diego? Local farm preps for first-ever harvestTo put it in enthusiasts terms, he says coffee is treated similar to California wines."We share flavor notes and coffee like wine ranges in price from low to high. You can find anything you are looking for," Taylor said. "And I believe since we were early adapters to the 'direct trade movement,' or sourcing at coffee origins and relationship coffee, we resonate with those that were interested in transparency, fair wages for farmers, and sustainability."The number of coffee houses around San Diego advertises just how strong the market is for something new and flavorful that tabs into those passionate drinkers."San Diego is becoming one of the most exciting and forward thinking, progressive coffee destinations in the nation," Arquines says. "Exciting times!" 3680
