SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Pilot Robert DeLaurentis touched down this week in San Diego after traveling 26,000 miles in the name of peace.DeLaurentis, known as the peace pilot, flew from the South Pole to the North Pole in a journey that took him to six continents and 22 countries in the name of peace."The mission of the flight is world peace and we're connecting the South Pole and the North Pole, the two places on the planet where peace has always existed and helping to connect everybody in between," DeLaurentis said.His journey to the only two locations on Earth that have never seen war will be chronicled in the upcoming documentary, "Peace Pilot to the Ends of the Earth and Beyond," featuring a collection of interviews, blogging, and observations.DeLaurentis encountered a slew of mechanical issues during his adventure."In fact, when I left Ushuaia for the South Pole I packed up all my personal belongings in a hotel rook with my address I assessed my chances of coming back at about 50%," says DeLaurentis. "Some of the problems we had on the flight included bursting fuel tanks, I was without GPS autopilot, and altitude heading and reference system for five hours."All those issues made worse knew by the coronavirus pandemic when he was forced to quarantine along the way — extending his trip from an intended five months to nine months."For every challenge, there was an opportunity and the pandemic created that for us because I had about a month and a half to reflect on what was happening to really work on my inner process," DeLaurentis said. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Police are investigating the death of a child at a Tierrasanta home Tuesday.San Diego Police responded to the 3100 Block of Minuteman St. just before 11 a.m. to reports of a four-month-old child not breathing. When paramedics arrived, they began CPR on the infant.First responders were not able to revive the child.Police do not suspect the death to be criminal in nature at this point. However, police said since they are still not sure what led to the baby's death, they are investigating.The child died in a home in a military housing neighborhood.  624

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Police are searching for a hit-and-run suspect after a woman was struck and killed in Point Loma Sunday morning.According to police, the incident happened on the 1700 block of Rosecrans Street at 12:17 a.m.A witness told police that a woman was standing in one of the southbound lanes. When police arrived, the 52-yer-old woman had been hit by a vehicle.The woman died at the scene and police say the vehicle that struck her didn' remain in the area.  484

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Now that Moderna’s COVID-19 vaccine has received approval from the Food and Drug Administration, San Diego County is one step closer to getting more people vaccinated.Moderna says its vaccine is safe and 94% effective. It will come in two doses taken 28 days apart.This week, there are two county hospitals that are expecting shipments of Moderna's vaccine. According to hospitals officials, the first shipment will arrive at Rady Children’s Hospital on Monday. It's unclear how many doses of the vaccine the hospital will receive.UC San Diego is also scheduled to receive their Moderna COVID-19 shipment this week.Gov. Gavin Newsom announced on Twitter that California is expecting 672,000 doses of the Moderna vaccine. It’s still unclear how many of those will be given to San Diego.By the end of the week and with two vaccines available, the federal government expects there will be 7.9 million doses delivered to more than 3,700 locations across the country.The distribution of the Moderna vaccine comes as the Centers for Diease Control and Prevention releases new recommendations about who should get the vaccine next. The CDC says frontline essential workers and adults ages 75 and older should be the priority in the next round.The agency describes essential workers as firefighters, police, teachers, and school staff. Those working in food and agricultural sectors, as well as U.S. Postal Service employees, public transit workers, and grocery store workers would be in that category.San Diego County has not said if the CDC's new recommendations will have any impact on their vaccine roll out plan.Until a wide distribution is available, the governor asks people to stay at home and wear a mask. 1734
