LOS ANGELES, April 14 (Xinhua) -- Customer complaints of an "uncharacteristic odor" prompted Johnson & Johnson to recall about 57,000 bottles of the prescription anti-seizure drug, Johnson & Johnson announced on Thursday. The recall affects two lots of the Topamax 100 mg tablets made by the company's Ortho-McNeil Neurologics division, Johnson & Johnson said. The drug was shipped and distributed between Oct. 19, 2010 and Dec. 28, 2010 in the United States and Puerto Rico. There were four consumer complaints about an odor believed to be caused by trace amounts of the chemical TBA (2,4,6 tribromoanisole), which is applied to wooden pallets used to transport and store packaging materials, Johnson & Johnson said. The recall is not expected to lead to a product shortage at the market, Ortho-McNeil Neurologics said.Similar complaints of a moldy, musty odor have led to the recalls of millions of bottles of Tylenol, Motrin and Benadryl products earlier.Last month, the U.S. government said it was taking over three Tylenol plants operated by McNeil, and the Food and Drug Administration launched a criminal investigation into safety issues at the factories, CNN reported.

HEFEI, Feb. 2 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao has visited farmers and workers in Dabieshan Mountain area, an old revolutionary base in east China's Anhui Province, to extend new year greetings ahead of the Spring Festival, which falls on Thursday. On Tuesday, Wen went to the area's Jinzhai County, once an important Red Army revolutionary base, to learn about the local economic and social development situation. He visited Zhaoyuan Village and called in on farmer Zhao Mengqi. Wen chatted with Zhao, asking about his family's income and their preparations for the lunar new year.Zhao works as a migrant worker in Wujiang City, an economically-developed part of Jiangsu Province. His son and daughter-in-law work in Shanghai. They returned home on the eve of the Spring Festival."With the income we earn working in cities and what we earn growing crops, our family income has increased and we have rebuilt and renovated our house," Zhao told Premier Wen. A paved road now allows buses to reach the village, Zhao added.Wen said, "Only when the people living in old revolutionary bases live better lives can we feel relieved."At farmer Zhao Kongying's home, Wen joined the family in making "yuanzi," a glutinous rice ball traditionally eaten during the Spring Festival.Wen later went to Hetang Village. There he visited villager Yu Shuhua's home and urged the local government to provide more help to needy people to ensure they have a happy lunar new year.At dinner time, he went to villager Zhang Jiasheng's home, joining the family to prepare dinner. He wore an apron and made a soup for the family.During the dinner, Zhang told Wen the village is rich with chestnuts, tea and traditional Chinese medicine, adding that tourism is also a source of income for the village.Wen said help and support for the old revolutionary base should be boosted, so that local people can lead happier lives.Wen also extended new year greetings to workers at the Meishan hydropower station in Jinzhai County. At retired worker Wan Benrong's home, Wen asked about the family's living conditions and their preparations for the lunar new year. After being told the couple received an extra 140 yuan each of monthly pension this year, Wen said the government has increased the basic pension for retired workers seven times since 2005."Our objective is to make you feel secure," Wen said.

WASHINGTON, May 2 (Xinhua) -- Rice originated in China, a team of U.S. genome researchers has concluded in a study tracing back thousands of years of evolutionary history through large-scale gene re-sequencing.Their findings, which appear Monday in the latest issue of the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS), indicate that domesticated rice may have first appeared as far back as approximately 9,000 years ago in the Yangtze Valley of China. Previous research suggested domesticated rice may have two points of origin -- India as well as China.Asian rice, Oryza sativa, is one of world's oldest crop species. It is also a very diverse crop, with tens of thousands of varieties known throughout the world. Two major subspecies of rice -- japonica and indica -- represent most of the world's varieties. Sushi rice, for example, is a type of japonica, while most of the long-grain rice in risottos are indica.Because rice is so diverse, its origins have been the subject of scientific debate. One theory -- a single-origin model -- suggests that indica and japonica were domesticated once from the wild rice O. rufipogon.Another -- a multiple-origin model -- proposes that these two major rice types were domesticated separately and in different parts of Asia. The multiple-origin model has gained currency in recent years as biologists have observed significant genetic differences between indica and japonica, and several studies examining the evolutionary relationships among rice varieties supported more than domestication in both India and China. In the PNAS study, the researchers re-assessed the evolutionary history, or phylogeny, of domesticated rice using previously published datasets, some of which have been used to argue that indica and japonica rice have separate origins. Using more modern computer algorithms, however, the researchers concluded these two species have the same origin because they have a closer genetic relationship to each other than to any wild rice species found in either India or China. In addition, the study's authors examined the phylogeny of domesticated rice by re-sequencing 630 gene fragments on selected chromosomes from a diverse set of wild and domesticated rice varieties. Using new modeling techniques, which had previously been used to look at genomic data in human evolution, their results showed that the gene sequence data was more consistent with a single origin of rice.In the study, the investigators also used a "molecular clock" of rice genes to see when rice evolved. Depending on how the researchers calibrated their clock, they pinpointed the origin of rice at possibly 8,200 years ago, while japonica and indica split apart from each other about 3,900 years ago. The study's authors pointed out that these molecular dates were consistent with archaeological studies.Archaeologists have uncovered evidence in the last decade for rice domestication in the Yangtze Valley beginning approximately 8, 000 to 9,000 years ago while domestication of rice in the India's Ganges region was around about 4,000 years ago."As rice was brought in from China to India by traders and migrant farmers, it likely hybridized extensively with local wild rice," explained New York University biologist Michael Purugganan, one of the study's co-authors. "So domesticated rice that we may have once thought originated in India actually has its beginnings in China."

BEIJING, Feb. 8 (Xinhua) -- China would continue expanding its radio and television networks coverage in the country's rural areas in the 2011-2015 period, according to the State Administration of Radio, Film and Television (SARFT).In the five-year period, efforts would focus on ensuring access to radio and TV services in those villages with less than 20 households, the SARFT said in a statement. It noted that China's other villages which had more than 20 households were already covered by the radio and TV networks, thanks to government's continuous efforts in this regard.China's central and local governments poured over 15.7 billion yuan (2.38 billion U.S. dollars) into the upgrading of the radio and TV networks in the country's rural areas in 2006-2010.Official figures indicated that 96.31 percent and 97.23 percent of China's population had access to radio and TV services respectively in 2009. The ratio was 86.02 percent and 87.68 percent respectively in 1997.
