Since the pandemic struck at the start of spring, people have been paralyzed with fear. And that fear has stopped many from entering the hospital due to worry about catching the potentially deadly coronavirus. That means heart patients, or other ailments, have gone unchecked but one health crisis that cannot wait is cancer.Aerin Leigh knows COVID-19 can kill, but her fear of dying of cancer is even greater it nearly took her baby girl."We have come so far," Aerin said. "She had leukemia when she was 3. She's 32 now."Medical advances saved her daughter, and Aerin too. Last October, the doctor's discovered cancer had invaded her abdomen."My appendix burst and spilled toxins and cancer into my system and (I) grew a 23-pound tumor," Aerin said.The tumor removal came with a hysterectomy, but the cancer stage 4 had already spread and she needed a second surgery just as the COVID-19 pandemic hit."Even in the scariest of times, like the pandemic, we're in now if they were willing to do my surgery I was going to get it done," Aerin said.Across the country, cancer screenings have been down 80 to 90 percent."Cancer cannot wait," said Dr. Richard Berri. "If we think that we can wait and think that cancer will not progress, or not put our patients in a more difficult position after waiting, then I think we're making a mistake."Dr. Berri is the chief of surgical oncology at Ascension Michigan. He says hospitals are taking all precautions and following CDC guidelines to keep patients safe."I think the hospital is actually one of the safest places to be and when it comes to cancer, the risk of cancer progressing or the risk of cancer being diagnosed at a later stage is far more dangerous than the risk of contracting COVID," Dr. Berri said.Aerin sought treatment at Ascension Michigan because Dr. Berri developed a program to treat advanced cancers of the abdomen like hers. Its called HIPEC, or Hyperthermic Intraperitoneal Chemotherapy.In May, Aerin received HIPEC. She was in and out of the hospital in record time – just three days."Is she considered cancer-free? She is," Dr. Berri said. Spring Valley, Calif. (KGTV) - The new Homeless Assistance Resource Team is expanding to battle the growing homeless population, according to the San Diego County Sheriff's Department. The program started in June. Their goal is to connect homeless people with services, like getting a driver's license, food stamps, or healthcare."It's not new to the sheriff's department, but having three full time deputies assigned to the mission is new." Deputy Matthew Faddis said they accompany the myriad of service agencies on their mission into obscure parts of town known to house homeless people.Faddis said it was to ensure the social workers, nurses and other workers' safety, and make them feel comfortable to do their job.Deputy Faddis said the department is working to help more people, "starting out doing this about once a week, we hope to expand that and eventually get the full time team doing this every single day."In Spring Valley, 10News walked with the team down into a concrete canal covered in graffiti. The couple they spoke with was given Hep A shots, hand sanitizer, water, and set up with a ride to get to an office where they can get set up for services tomorrow."If you don't have skills to communicate, if you don't have skills to be there on time, you get a stigma of, 'oh people don't care, there just going through my file anyway,' it doesn't matter." Kristin Kerrick said that's part of the reason why homeless people don't want to talk with the team. (KGTV) — Even though the tables and chairs are empty, the pit-masters at Cali Comfort BBQ are keeping busy.The kitchen and bar are filling takeout and delivery orders, thanks to increased online and phone sales."As restaurant owners, we can't discriminate how people eat our barbecue," says Owner Shawn Walchef. "If they want to order barbecue delivered to their office or the little league field, then they should be able to get that. They shouldn't have to come and wait in line."It's a new strategy Walchef is using during the pandemic, thanks to his partnership with Restaurant Solutions, a consulting firm that helps small restaurants analyze their financial prospects."What we've been doing is really focusing on doing break-even analysis with our clients," says Sydney Lynn, the Director of Planning Advisory Services with the company.She says restaurants need to focus on people's digital experience now more than ever, so restaurants can be profitable during and after the Pandemic."Restaurant entrepreneurs and owners are the most creative and innovative folks you'll know. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell vowed on Tuesday that legislators would not go home for the holidays without an approval of a stimulus bill.“We're not leaving here without a COVID package. It's not gonna happen. We're gonna stay here until we get a COVID package. No matter how long it takes, we’ll be here,” McConnell said.Last week, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi made a similar proclamation.But both sides have been working on economic relief for months, but have failed to come to any sort of compromise. But a major sticking point is on whether companies should be protected from coronavirus-related lawsuits. Pelosi and Democrats are against the proposal, citing concerns that businesses will not follow public health guidelines.“This is protection for our small businesses, so that they're not held liable for COVID incidences through no fault of their own,” White House press secretary Kayleigh McEnany said on Tuesday. ”And (Pelosi is) really playing up to the trial lawyers and opposing liability protection, which should be something that's just mere common sense.”Two weeks ago, a bipartisan group of legislators proposed a 0 billion stimulus plan that would extend funds for additional unemployment benefits for up to 18 weeks per worker.
