ADDIS ABABA, Jan. 11 (Xinhua) -- China views Ethiopia as its major economic and trading partner in Africa, says Minister of Commerce Chen Deming on Monday.     The bilateral trade volume reached a historical high of 1.376 billion U.S. dollars during the first 11 months of last year, up 12.4 percent over the same period of the previous year, said Chen, adding that China's imports from Ethiopia during that period rose 202 percent to over 200 million dollars.     During his talks with Sufian Ahmed, Ethiopia's minister of finance and economic development, the Chinese minister said China's investment in Ethiopia had accumulated to 138 million dollars in areas like textile, daily necessities, machinery, glass, building materials and leather.     By the end of November last year, Chinese firms in Ethiopia had accumulated a turnover of engineering contracts with nearly 4 billion dollars, said Chen, who arrived here on Monday for a two-day visit.     Chen put forward a four-point proposal on further development of bilateral trade and economic cooperation: First, further expanding its imports from Ethiopia through the use of tariff-free policies; Second, strengthening cooperation in investment and engineering contracts and continuing to encourage strong Chinese firms to invest in Ethiopia; Third, fully implementing the eight new measures to enhance cooperation with Africa; Fourth, further promoting cooperation in official development assistance to support Ethiopia's infrastructure, and projects aimed to improve people's well-being.     For his part, Sufian expressed his thanks for China's long-term official development aid to Ethiopia.     The Ethiopian minister said trade deficit with China has improved significantly and China has become Ethiopia's biggest trading partner.     Sufian spoke highly of China's eight new measures to enhance cooperation with Africa, saying that Ethiopia would work together with China to fully implement the measures.

SHANGHAI, Nov. 15 (Xinhua) -- U.S. President Barack Obama arrived in China's economic hub Shanghai on Sunday night, starting a state visit to China.     Air Force One touched down at the Shanghai Pudong International Airport in heavy rain at about 23:10.     This is Obama's first state visit to China since he assumed the presidency in January. SHANGHAI, Nov. 23 (Xinhua) -- Baosteel Group, China's leading steelmaker, announced on Monday its acquisition of 15 percent stake in Aquila Resources, an Australian iron ore and coal company.     The 286 million Australian dollar purchase (265 million U.S. dollars) has made Baosteel the second largest shareholder of Aquila, said the Chinese company based in Shanghai.     The transaction is an important strategy for Baosteel's overseas expansion by securing long-term supply of critical raw materials for its steel making business, said the company.     The deal will help the Australian company source low-cost financing from Chinese institutions to support its projects.     Tony Poli, executive chairman of Aquila said on the company website, "The company now looks forward to developing its relations with Baosteel to the mutual benefit of both companies."     The deal was approved on November 13 by China's top economic regulator, the National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC), and it was Baosteel's first large strategic investment in a foreign public company.     The two companies signed an agreement on the acquisition in August this year and got nod in October by Australia's Foreign Investment Review Board (FIRB), which limited Baosteel's stake in the Australian company to the utmost 19.9 percent.     Under the terms of the deal, Dai Zhihao, a vice president of Baosteel, will step in as a board member of the Australian coalminer.

BEIJING, Nov. 2 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao and European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso exchanged views on climate change and China-EU cooperation on Monday during a telephone conversation.     The upcoming UN climate change conference in Copenhagen should aim to achieve positive results in the full, effective and sustained implementation of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) and the Kyoto Protocol, Wen said.     "Emphasis should be put on making clear and detailed arrangements for mitigation, adaptation, technology transfer and financing," he added.     "The key to success at the conference is to uphold the UNFCCC, the Kyoto Protocol, the principle of 'common but differentiated responsibilities' and the authorization of the Bali Road Map," he said.     President Hu Jintao had made clear China's position and specific measures at the UN climate change summit in September, he said.     The premier specified six aspects China will give priority to in its next steps. That included integrating actions on climate change into its economic and social development plan, implementing and improving the National Climate Change Program, promoting the green economy, and reinforcing the comprehensive capability in coping with climate change.     Work also needs to be done in improving legislation on dealing with climate change and boosting international exchanges and cooperation, Wen said.     China highly values its relations with the European Union and both sides should further deepen the strategic mutual trust and strengthen all-round cooperation under new conditions, Wen said.     China is ready to work with the EU to push for a success of the Copenhagen conference and promote the comprehensive strategic partnership with the EU, he added.     In the telephone conversation, Barroso briefed Wen on the EU's position and proposals on climate change.     Barroso said the EU appreciates China's efforts in coping with climate change and its achievements in energy saving and emission reduction.     The EU hopes to enhance coordination and cooperation with China to make sure the Copenhagen conference produces positive outcomes, and expects to make joint efforts with China to push bilateral cooperation to a new level, Barroso said.

CAIRO, Nov. 6 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao arrived here Friday, starting a two-day official visit to Egypt preceding a top-level review of action to build China-Africa cooperation.     Egyptian Prime Minister Ahmed Nazef received Wen at the airport.     During his visit, Wen is scheduled to meet with Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak and hold talks with Nazef. He will also meet with Arab League chief Amr Mussa, and deliver a speech at the Arab League headquarters in Cairo.     This is Wen's second official visit to Egypt. The first was in 2006, which marked the 50th anniversary of establishing diplomaticties between China and Egypt.
